I have to say though, while I did not think there were many chances for C/L to get Bronze... I'm putting them way lower this time :/

Yeah, but they tweeted it as if it was new to get the point across. Doubt they changed their mind on it. They probably just want clicks and reactions as well.

Yikes! Wait till they see P/C's Latin Ed Sheeran. V/M have a Latin flavor and beat even if they chose "nontraditional" music. But Ed Sheeran:rolleyes:

Roll your eyes all you like, but the Ed Sheeran pieces that Papadakis/Cizeron have chosen fit the requirements and the dance does have a Latin flavour. You may not like them, but please stop saying things that aren’t true.

#Shibsibs trend, Moulin Rouge trending, I even saw Life is Beautiful trending in my region, so...
I think it's time to realize that this is by far the best discipline.

Wait until they see all the Latin SD, and all the FDs. And the rest of the top teams. Okay, I'm too young to say anything like it so if there are veterans here tell me : we might see one of the best Ice Dance Olympic event... ever ?

I think we have more depth now than possibly ever. There are at least 10-12 teams doing interesting things. Maybe even the final three flights are must see.

Based on the reactions I'm seeing on social media, the general public has much less discriminatory tastes than we FSUers do...plus the Latin dances this year have been more on the....classy...side. I haven't read anything about cultural appropriation yet. That was what I was worried about actually, haha.

Also, V/M were smart to not listen to the ice dance fans as their music selection seems to have gone over very well with the general audiences.

I didn’t get a chance to see many of the Twitter comments after the SD, so thanks for sharing this.

The complaints against the Latin SD really reached a ridiculous level this year, IMO. Like I’ve said all season, I’ve really enjoyed the majority of the SDs (and yes, especially V/M’s). I’m glad many other people did, too.

For me it's the best dance olympic event. The diversity of the programs are really exceptional.

And, yes Dance is by far the best discipline. I said it earlier, I think Dance is going to be the most talked about event. I expect dance to "drop the mic" and show everyone why it's special and needs to remain at the olympics.

When you think how many world medalists are competing right now, it's really incredible.
3 world champion : V/M, C/L, P/C. V/M have 3 silvers and P/C have one.
3 world silver : Shibs, WeaPo, Chock/Bates and all of them also have at least one bronze medal that they won the year after their silver, Shibs have 2 bronze.
1 world bronze : B/S

2 Olympic champion : V/M, B/S (V/M in individual, both in team event)

Just you imagine... if Meryl&Charlie decided to come back :D (That would have created the greatest mess on forums haha)

Thought the conversation about ice dancing trending on twitter, etc. was interesting, so used it as an example of how to do quick Twitter data mining in R for a colleague. Quickly plotted two word clouds, one for "VirtueMoir" and one for "ShibSibs".

I'm guessing people on Twitter are speculating whether Scott kissing Tessa's neck was platonic or romantic? I like to think the word "son" being so common is sekret baby talk. :sekret:

ETA: Also enjoy "milkbone" as a big word for the Shibs.

Haha. I had an assignment last year analyzing data from twitter in python and I used Charlie White's twitter account.

I went back and watched the last few Olympic winning FDs and noticed flow usually wins. Speed, power and glide. P&C trump everyone on that. V&M would do better to take out some of the transitions and go for more flow. They even open up with staccato tango movements. I actually love their new Moulin Rouge - its dramatic and goes for the highlights. Not sure it is constructed in a way that pleases the judges though.

Rewatching the Olympics the last years, usually the best performances win ;)
Navka/Kostomarov won with Carmen (But Delobel/Schoenfelder had the best FD of the night for me) and that's not really flowy, V/M in 2010 were outstanding, so were D/W 4 years ago. Actually the skaters cannot watch what the other do. If V/M go for more flow, this won't be as good as P/C. Vice-Versa if P/C decide to do Moulin Rouge. They wanted to play their strengths - and I could not asked for the better because both are drastically different.
Grishuk/Platov won in 1994 with quite the FD

I think I'm talking about something a little different. See D&W FD. Its not flowy like P&C flowy but it moved. Same thing with G&P's rock and roll FD in 94, it moved. I guess that is blade power and speed? They were both always going.

When I thought about previous winning FDs, my thought was that the ones with the most hype/postitive press about them usually won.

The exception was T/D in 1994.... :shuffle:

But 5 days left, I don´t think there is time for big changes. And after seeing the harsh technical panel, I guess everyone went to ask them about the problems and they only will have time to work on it.

Well I surelely was too young in 2006, but if N/K FD was hyped... good for them ? (No shade, just it was not extraordinary in composition even though it was powerful - but that is me being subjective)
This year there is hype for many FD too.

I don’t think it was so much that FD was a good program but more about it being a foregone conclusion that N/K would win the gold. FP/M shocked by winning the compulsory dance but nobody thought that would hold up after the OD and FD and of course we got Barbra glare in the OD.

IIRC, lots of talk about Navka as Carmen.....good interpretation....long lines etc.
Interpretation big yes. Like I said, not my absolute favourite (but OGM worthy).

Best moment in figure skating history.

Yeah, I feel the bigger narrative was whether BelGosto would get silver like they did at 2005 Worlds and become the first American ice dance team with an Olympic medal in decades.

Everyone knew that N/K would win given the tradition of Russian ice dance and their dominance. Didn't they go undefeated in their last three competitive years?

Didn't they go undefeated in their last three competitive years?

They were defeated by Denkova & Staviski at 2004-2005 NHK.

In 2006, half the field was out of the event before we reached the FD.

Belbin & Agosto had some mistakes in the FD.
Denkova & Staviski had a mistake in the SD.
Fusar-Poli & Margaglio had the fall in the SD.
