The Dance Hall 13: When You Dance on the Ice and Your Feet Twizzle Twice, That's Amore

First group of ice dancers have come back to hotel after morning practice but no sign of Caroline & Michael. Michael was sent back to hotel by an ambulence last night.

updated: They showed up! It seems a lower back issue but they will compete.
They ended up withdrawing after doing the morning practice and the warm-up. I don't doubt it was the right choice, but it was so heartbreaking to see how sad they looked.

How did they think this was a winning FD for C/B. Madison Chock doesn't have the skating skills to pull off a Flamenco. Or am I missing something? To beat FB/Ciz, you need to channel the energy of V/M, or am I overthinking this. Zin/Kol have no romance in their FD, but all the drama and attack. I prefer the Swedish version, but the program is solid. The last good Najarro FD done using the Flamenco theme was given to I/Z in 2015. He also gave Hurtado and Diaz a mesmerising SD in 2015.

Didn’t Chock/Bates come out slow last year? Didn’t they lose to Fear/Gibson? They’re veterans they know what they’re doing. Let’s wait before proclaiming Olympic champions in October. 🙄 Personally, I’d be happy with both Chock/Bates and Fear/Gibson on the Olympic podium regardless of color.

Slow is one thing, but the program is somewhat underwhelming. If you're going to do a flamenco, do a flamenco, choose music that will get the crowd into it.

I thought Z/G were fabulous although I agree, the romance is missing.
I was fine with the somber feel though as I've had more than enough sappy R/J. IMO deservedly second here.

Chock and Bates had moments but I agree the skirt isn't quite working. And in fact I find the whole costume a miss, which for her is surprising.

And I almost laughed at Bates in the choreo section. He just doesn't do sexy, dramatic intensity well.

I know it's early and there was inflated scoring for FB/C at a home GP, but a 10 point gap is concerning for them and also being scored below F/G.

I know I know they are late starters, the other teams competed already blah blah blah.

This program for all the reasons I mentioned plus the lack of speed in the twizzles and overall and the 10 point gap is a problem. I also find this version of the music bordering on elevator/muzac.

Even if FB/C were over-scored by 4 points and C/B gain 5, they still fall behind.

Oh boy I'm getting more and more nervous for G/P

I think the C/B program is a miss. Doesn’t play to their strengths and that skirt only make Madison look very short, and hides their lines. They are the masters of reinvention during the season, so I look forward to their changes.

DUNE II is pretty compelling - a good way to recycle a theme but new enough to capture our attention.

Beyond sad for Green/Parsons. This will make getting an Olympic spot almost impossible…

That was definitely a concern when their FD music was revealed earlier this week and many of us listened to the piece in full - we just thought that they'd get it remixed/edited for a stronger ending, which they didn't. That's definitely something I see them going back to Montreal and reworking over the next few weeks as it's probably the easiest fix to the program they can make in 3 weeks.

If I didn’t know any better, I would have pulled a Tessa Sekret Baby and accused I.AM of sabotaging them for the benefit of one of the other 50 medal contending teams they train.

The thing with C/B's FD is that I think what they need to do to make this pop more isn't that difficult. Except for the lifts, I wish they matched my imagination when I heard the theme

I also really really hope Gilles/Poirier REIMAGINED Vincent in capital letters because I don't know how a straight forward dusting off an old FD will work this season no matter how charming it was in the day.

I want a real competition.

The thought crossed my mind of who does IAM love more FB/C or C/B?

But then I thought that they are just letting the teams choose their own music this season (as “Whale song” is so 100% Cizeron) and then letting the chips fall where they may. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m just flabbergasted that after 15 years C/B decide to do a SL lift low to the ground in the season where they have a twenty mile skirt that is two centimeters from being a total disaster. Let’s get it together, people!!

Especially after the non-costume issues at the Olympics for them. The awful collision and falls going into the spin in the FD 18 and the slip in the rut by Chock in the RD 22. Don't tempt fate.

You have to think teams 'would' plan ahead. If it's my last or even first Olympic season, you know I'm going to play to my strengths, and at least have concepts and music picked out in advance. Harder to do with RD themes, but you've got some advance notice enough. I feel like the Whale and even Dune II are such seamless works of choreo, where it seems dancing and elements are woven together - rather than skating the elements up to the music.

That said, C/B tend to have slower, more choppy programs with stops and starts to highlight the acrobatic movement and lifts and choreo cover their weaknesses. The sharpness required for a flamenco isn't doing them any favors either.

Could def be the alleged Marina sabotage and another case of Seasons a la V/M.

Maybe just me but it’s felt like chock bates have just phoned it in the last few seasons and are having a rude awakening when they thought they could do it again this year.

Their concepts are always so interesting but the program itself feels half baked.

Hasn't Chock said these two programs are her faves or something?
As a huge V/M fan when I first saw Seasons and then what D/W were skating to it was obvious there were problems in that camp.
I don't think that is true for this Flamenco FD at all. I think the concept is in C/B wheelhouse and I think the fixes are easy enough. This FD has a solid enough base and concept to build on.

I’m not getting matador vibes from her at all: if they wanted that, they’d need music like Paco de Lucia’s riffs on Carmen in Carlos Saura’s movie. Modern Flamenco doesn’t have to be fierce, but the matador/bull thing does, unless this really is all about the long periods of bull fight stalking. I think they should just lean into Chock being the cape, if they insist on askirt like that and she’s portraying more than a Flamenco woman. The she could wear a more classic no sleeves dress in one color with the skirt lining in contrast, and the ruffles could go along her neckline, where they belong, which would make her look taller, and the short matador jacket would make him look more proportional to her.

Watching that skirt move around her legs was like the film techniques that flicker, and it looked like she was stepping — and not trying to do Flamenco footwork — on the ice rather than gliding, at least more than usual.

Bates play the Matador, where? Is he even playing sexy rock star in the RD? This all feels very mischevious.

No one is gonna convince me that V&M’s RD is inferior to whatever D&W were doing. FD may be another matter but it showed the coaching team had different ideas for each of them. C&B have it in them to out better a friggin Vogue RD and an ode to Brendan Fraser in a fat suit.
