The Dance Hall 13: When You Dance on the Ice and Your Feet Twizzle Twice, That's Amore

I agree with the sentiment that Guignard/Fabbri have never had good programs, so recycling something old will just continue this trend. I want to see them skate the best programs of their careers for this home Olympics. I want something memorable.
Yes! I feel bad if my post sounded like I was kicking them, it's just so frustrating, because this team deserves really memorable and cool dances to show them off!

Is it that G/F have never had good programs or is it just that they’re not dynamic enough performers?
I think they are plenty dynamic (they skate with speed and intensity and I like the chemistry between them) but I just don't like the programs that Barbara has given them. I hope they consulted outside choreographers for this Olympic season.

G/F have always been that team who have great skills, but never any decent programmes to really show it off. What would you even call a classic FD of theirs that they could bring back?
La La Land. I saw it live at GP Final in 2018 and it was wonderful, and what turned me into a fan. But that's a long way in the past and I don't think they should bring it back. But for me it's one of their best programs.

For me it's their blandest and most boring FD and the worst choice possible for their final season.

Did Guinard/Fabbri do an Atonement program?

If so, I would be okay with bringing that one back. I loved that one.

If I am misremembering the team, someone let me know who it was. lol.

My favourite is My love will never die. I think it was something really different for them and it was a successful year.
My Love Will Never Die is my favourite Guignard/Fabbri programme too. I think it worked because it was far enough outside of their wheelhouse to challenge them, but not so far outside that they never got comfortable with it (like the robots). I thought they had one of the better latin RDs that season too.
Reusing programs is :blah:
Repeats :blah: Reworks :blah: Sequels :blah: Exogenesis :blah: Romeo & Juliet :blah: Notre Dame de Paris, Maleguena, generic lyrical contemporary :blah: :blah: :blah:

I’m catching up on some of the programmes from the Challengers I missed while I was on holiday and feeling such a hater. At least I can blame Rettstatt and pals for all the bad RDs but the uninspired FDs are on the teams.

So far the only senior FD I loved is Fear/Gibson (and I had been pretty sceptical about that one before they debuted). I didn’t like the Taschlers’ Matrix as much as I was hoping to but I think it will be great with a few tweaks (and preferably a more flattering costume for Natalie).

Gleb Smolkin shared his thoughts on this year's RD:

Q: What do you think of this year’s rhythm dance theme overall?

Gleb Smolkin:
I’m not a huge fan of it. Ice dance has so many styles and genres – you can create incredible and interesting things. I’m a bit old-school in my thinking; I believe we should skate to tango, waltz, and other classic styles too. While I understand that watching twenty tangos might be boring for audiences, twenty attempts to simply “have fun” can also feel repetitive.

Also a comment from Bekker/Hernandez:

“Finding the right 90s music for skating is so tough!” said Bekker. “A lot of it feels like background music, and some of the big hits are, let’s say — one-hit wonders. We really wanted something cohesive that would still feel strong and make a statement for the Olympic season.”

Couldn’t sleep last night and somehow I ended up watching about 60 programs of Paul and Piper throughout their career.

I have to say, Vincent is probably the best program they’ve ever had but I also think Joni Mitchell both sides now is a stand out, and I would not mind had they served us that program as well.

And now, with the news of the rhythm dance, I can’t wait to see them claim gold.

🥇 🦄 💅🏼

My favourite is My love will never die. I think it was something really different for them and it was a successful year. Looking back at their BIO it says they did a March with me FD.I just don't remember that
That's the only program of theirs I've ever liked and I have tried so hard to like them.

I am glad the ice dancers are talking about how much they dislike the theme. Forcing viral hits never works and it's worse when they rules they have prevent skaters from choosing music that would have made really good and interesting programs.

Wait, why are they against the rules?

Too slow. The music must be “high energy and crowd pleasing” and the section where they do pattern steps must be “min 120 beats per minute.”

Fear/Gibson said at an event this fall that one of their initial music choices was deemed “too slow for an RD” during feedback. (That this would happen to them, of all people, is LOL.)

The decades dance is terrible and reductive, but I will say part of the issue is part of the total lack of imagination we're seeing from the few coaching schools. There is plenty of fantastic 90s music out there that isn't Ricky Martin or Backstreet Boys that fits the requirements. Sadly, IAM's monopoly on dance is making things more bland and less imaginative. It's a real problem.

Hard disagree, with regard to the RD theme this year. There is plenty of great '90s music, but it's hardly IAM's fault that almost all of the teams, across the globe, are struggling to come up with good music selections for the RD. They aren't showing a similar lack of diversity in their music choices & concepts when it comes to the FD this season (well, some of the top teams are, but that's a different discussion), nor were there problems with a wide range of good RDs coming from a variety of ice dance schools the past two seasons. The limitations the IDTC put on the music options for the RD this year ARE the root of the problem - also, another limiting factor is the choice to use the rhumba for the pattern step - the IDTC could have easily gone with a waltz and that may have made a difference for teams looking for music options that go together cohesively.

Twenty attempts per competition year after year at trying to relive a generation and capture that perfect 'feeling' which the skaters weren't even around for..

I had hopes at the 90s theme but nah. There's no time to actually sell any RD these days unless one wants to argue that these character steps are just oh so different to end 90% of the programs. That said, I'm all in for any team that actually goes over the top with the ridiculousness of all of it, and I think Soucisse & Firus have succeeded with it. I also think Gilles & Poirier will hit it out of the park in that regard.
