;Biggest WOW moment was the baby french. That FD is EVERYTHING!
Yes !
And my love for it has nothing to do with a post I made 5 years ago on french figure skating board gushing about obscure pianist Laake and Swell after hearing him on my favorite radio (and someone else's, because come on, on which radio can you listen La Lupe, Pentatonix, Laake, Kidjo's Bolero and plenty more eclectic stuff ?). He gained prestige and some fame in 2020 during the ..... working with big institutions like Arte and Radio France and that's certainly when he got picked up. But I can say this choice had my early stamp of approval.
What I wasn't yet convinced about was how Loïcia and Théo would sell the transition between Swell / Gnossiennes and Estrella Morente.
It took them a perfectly tuned interpretation.
And interpretation used to be a weakness for them because :
1° their natural abilities weren't in sync (his face has always been an open window to the music, her face is far less mobile and she tends to overfocus, interprete less to concentrate on the moves when she doesn't have a full grip of her programs)
2° Villard's naturalistic interpretation. NOT russian. Villard skaters' faces don't speak louder than their music. That's their trademark, even in ballroom dances, even in latin dances.
So the challenge was for her to remain naturalistic while force-emoting and to project to the public but in a natural way.
To an equal level to her partner. Which is certainly another challenge.
It must have taken specific training.
In 2018-2019, their rock FD was clearly showing the trouble
Each year, the FDs were designed to make her progress in that regard : Carmen in 2019-2020, Papa Can you Hear Me in 2020-2021, Bolero in 2021-2022. Strong choices, feminine choices to challenge and empower her.
For me, the changing factor is not that this program is out of this world but that Loïcia inhabits it the same way as Théo. She owns it and makes it work to its full potential.
The RD needs a bit more mileage but they are not far. I would just make a slight choreographic change to go along with the transition to Pentatonix. Something like a cradle / lullaby move (hey I'm not a choreographer). Right now it seems unannouced and blurry.
