Hey Everyone!

I know it's been a long time since I've added any videos to The Technical Panel on YouTube, but I want to introduce something that should be both a lighter lift for me and something more engaging - By the Elements. With this series, I'll post just the elements, links to the relevant ISU documents needed to score the elements, and also links to rescore the programs on skatingscores.com.

The first up this season, and what inspired me to do this, is the controversial result of the 2023 NHK Free Dance, specifically, the debate over Fear & Gibson's win over Guignard & Fabbri.

By the Elements - NHK 2023 Free Dance

Rescore Fear & Gibson:
Rescore Guignard & Fabbri:

ISU - Grade of Execution of Required Elements (including Choreographic Elements)
ISU - Program Component Chart
ISU - Composition, Presentation and Skating Skills Charts

Please post your score for the teams and discuss why you marked the elements and components the way you did according to the rules and guidelines outlined by the ISU. I plan to do this for the GPF too!

Program Components
Composition: 8.75
• Very good at performing in multiple planes. The connection between the elements contained many bare/empty moments, but there were some moments of great connection between some elements. Choreography was very reflective of the music and characters. Overall ice coverage was above average, and they had good unity. Overall I saw this as Very Good.
Presentation: 9.25
• Expression & projection was exceptional as they were very committed to their characters and performance. The variety of movement and energy was very good. While overall musical sensitivity and timing was very good, the program was much stronger in the end compared to the beginning in this regard. The opening elements had very average relation to the music. Overall unison and oneness was very good. Overall, I saw this as Excellent, but could use more musical nuance at the beginning of the program.
Skating Skills: 8.50
• The variety of edges, turns, and directions was above average. The were very few difficult transitions outside the elements. Clarity of edges and turns was above average, but again, was primarily showcased in the elements. Balance and glide was above average, with a lot of two foot skating holding them back. Flow was very good, but many of the transitions were simple, not showing a lot of fluid knee action. Power and speed was above average, but not comparable to some of the top teams we’ve seen in recent years. Overall I saw this as Very Good.

Program Components
Composition: 9.00
• Very good at performing in multiple planes. The connection between the elements contained a lot of complexity. Choreography was reflective of the music and characters. Overall ice coverage was very good, and they had very good unison. Given the overall complexity and smoothness of transitions, I saw this as Excellent.
Presentation: 9.00
• Expression & projection was very good. They were committed to their characters, but a bit muted in performance. The variety of movement and was very good, but the energy of the program. While overall musical sensitivity and timing was very good, the program was fairly one note. Overall unison and oneness was excellent. Overall, I saw this as Excellent, but could use more variation in expression and energy.
Skating Skills: 9.25
• The variety of edges, turns, and directions was very good. The transitions and variation of steps outside the elements was excellent. Clarity of edges and turns was very good. Balance and glide was excellent. Flow was very good, even during difficult transitions, showing excellent knee action. Power and speed was very good, and toward the top of the field. Overall I saw this as Excellent.
