Synchronized Skating Season 2018-2019

I though hayden fs was waayyyy overscored. I am really not a fan of it. I think if skyliners can gain a little confidence and perform cleanly they could beat hayden at nationals.

Results at Mozart Cup all over the place in Seniors... Nova from Canada just proved they are a team to watch, both programs were stunning :swoon:

It was a shock to see Nova win Mozart cup, but WOW! What a program. Canadian Nationals just got a whole lot more interesting. I love the opening dance lifts.
Thank you for the link. I thought it was kind of a mess. Also I don't like the new trend where teams have a couple of men to do dance lifts and pairs lifts. I know that several teams are doing that now, including Skyliners.

Happy that starlights junior finally got sent to junior worlds. Its been a few years in the making and I really like their programs this year. I think lexettes are way under par this year. It is hard to believe they were considered the top US team just a few seasons ago.

Their FS is really pretty! It’s definitely been a season of change in quite a few countries :)

I agree it is very nice but they are not at the skating level (and they have been making some mistakes) to be considered a top US team let alone top world team as they were in seasons past. I think they will likely be 5th at nationals. I really am liking crystal ice junior this year but I am not sure how I feel about them reusing their SP. I feel a lot of teams (especially skyliners who are basically the exact same team as last year) could have done that but chose to try something new so clearly they weren't as clean as a team who has done the same program for 2 years.

Sorry, I was referring to Starlights, should have been clearer!

As for Crystal Ice, I think they actually competed a new SP, but it wasn’t well-received. And choreographing a 2nd new SP mid-season is very difficult, so they decided to go with what they had time to do.

Okay that makes more sense. I was wondering why their federation would let them use the same program. I agree, starlights programs (particularly the long) are stunning. One of the first times I have actually liked the different dresses because it makes sense for the program and isn't too flashy. On that note I dislike haydenettes dresses lol. I think they have improved a lot since the first few competitions but I still don't see them being any threat at worlds.

US nationals today starting with novice and junior short. I think the top 3 in novice are set (teams elite, skyliners, starlights) but not sure in which order. For junior baring disaster it will probably be skyliners, starlights, teams elite (in that order). Very excited about worlds being in lake placid, I might be able to go and watch

You called it!

You called it!
The novice scores were a bit off to me, high in general but I thought teams elite and skyliners were too close. After looking at protocols I think they were very generous with GOE for teams elite and calls for all teams. I was very impressed with teams elite junior though and think they might become top 2 in the US next year. Very excited for the long and senior short today

I am not so familiar with US synchro, so I hadn’t actually heard of Teams Elite before... Have they done so well in the past, or have they moved up the rankings recently?

I'm watching the Junior FS b/c 2 clubmates compete on one of the teams. I will admit that I don't follow synchro or know much about it, but I'm enjoying the event. And somewhat amused that I've heard both Fix You and Romeo & Juliet. Ice dance's greatest hits, lol.

And we now have Carmen...

ETA: Wow, the Skyliners! A well-deserved win!

Although Skyliners programs are generally as boring for me as Hayden's, I'm happy to see them beat Hayden. Hayden's been stagnating in choreography, musical theme, skating style, and transitions for the last 6-8 seasons. Probably because they knew they could rest on their laurels. Unless they had 5+ falls no one in the US could come close. Skyliners also aren't the most creative, but they have been improving everything greatly each season I see them: skating skills, varied choreography, expression, changing themes season to season, etc. Seeing them at Anaheim this year vs. Hayden's first competition, I wondered if they'd top a clean Hayden at Nationals, and it looks like that might happen.

The third to fourth is somewhat more interesting to me. I'd heard about Miami synchro's recruiting issues as early as 8 years ago, but now it seems they're really feeling the hurt. I saw them at Anaheim and I thought thought they'd be fighting for the podium. Looks like there's a chance I wasn't going crazy with that bold prediction...

They're a relatively new team that previously only had youth levels, but in the past 3-4 seasons has gotten very competitive on a National level. I think this is their first time having a Junior team. They are very strong. I remember seeing their Juv team a couple years back and thinking they could beat most Int/Novice teams with no problem.

They are a rather new organization that have sky rocketed in the last 3 years. They have become big on the US stage in all the qualifying levels (2nd in novice and intermediate, 3rd in junior). I personally don't think they will have as much success internationally because they lack many of the qualities the international judges prefer. They have amazing interpretation and showy/cool choreography but lack the speed and skating skills of international contenders.

I know hayden did great in intermediate but I was seriously underwhelmed by their novice and junior team. Especially if they are loosing the heavy backing they had scoring wise domestically, I am starting to worry about the organization as a whole. I think they struggled with relatively new teams so hopefully this is just an off season for them.

I am so looking forward to senior free tomorrow. Hopefully skyliners really take advantage of this opportunity because although hayden's long program has greatly improved it is still far from my favorite. I can only imagine the chaos if skyliners end up on top

Junior was very interesting. Starlights had an amazing skate and had a full arena standing ovation (very rare in synchro), their program is so moving and emotional. Skyliners were on fire, they clearly want to be back on the world podium and I think they have a good shot. Teams elite had a great junior debut and I see so much potential in them.

I think skyliners and elite will be the organizations to watch in the next few years because they have the coaches and choreography along with strong skaters throughout all their younger lines which can feed their international teams in the future.

I think the issues started back after the Boston Worlds. A lot of really good long-time skaters retired. Then they had a slump but recovered after getting some girls from the skyliners. A lot of long time skaters retired after the Colorado Springs worlds as well, which was probably a second big hit. After next year more will probably retire.

The biggest issue I've been seeing with the Haydenettes, beginning in that Boston Worlds season was that they weren't nearly as innovative or creative as the other top teams, even within the US. You could see them copying the "wow" moments or basic pieces of choreography from year to year and even program to program in the same year (as it was for Boston Worlds, where they copy and pasted their entire MITF element between programs). Even now when Russian and Finnish teams are coming up with new positions for the lifted skater, Hayden's been doing the same middle split lift for the last 4-5 seasons, with only a change of position added to meet the new level requirement.

As they tend to do, Haydenettes really pulled it together for the long program. Skyliners made several small mistakes.

I think that if not next year then the year after skyliners will overtake hayden as the top US team. They have stronger younger teams (including a world class junior team) to feed them. I know they are also getting skaters from strong midwest junior teams that do not have a senio. rI think they will actually become stronger after Lake Placid worlds once a few of the older girls leave and make spots for their stronger younger skaters. I think they held it together pretty well with how much pressure was on them after yesterdays performance, they very much deserved that worlds spot. I think Hayden did so much better today and brought more energy but I agree with what an earlier poster said about them using similar wow movements every year. Even so, they had great confidence which set them apart. I am really curious to see how starlights long is scored and reacted to at worlds since the crowd at nationals received it so well.
