Skate America 2025 Women’s Free -Misses Accomplished

Yes, it's the judges with their stingy PCS for Rinka that I am side-eyeing.
Yes, I was watcing those too as she skated and thought the fix is in here. Rinka is NOT going to win this event. I don't know .... I have nothing against Alysa at all ....she had a great skate and she doesn't give out the scores AND good on her for saying she'd have to watch her skate on video to see if it was good enough. So absolutely NO shade on Alysa from me but I think this result is just wrong ....and too much of this kind of judging isn't doing the sport any favors (not that fs judging hasn't been questionable forever).

Ehhhh... Rinka's program does peter out at the end, which I'm guessing has a bit of a dampening effect on her PCS marks. But even if she was given PCS to match Alysa, it still wouldn't have been enough to win.
Well, the GPF is in Japan, hope they will do `thank the organizers' stunt like it was done in the USA
Duh. We already saw what they did to KniFraz in Saitama at 2023 Worlds. You can bet it's going to be a tough environment for Alysa (and hopefully Amber) to win in. But it will also be a pressure cooker if there are 4 Japanese women there because you know none of them wants to be the last placed Japanese woman there heading into J-Nats.

Ok GPF update.
Who is definitely IN:
-Sakamoto
-Nakai
-Liu

Possible qualifier but not guaranteed:
-Watanabe

Still to go with a strong chance:
-Glenn
-Chiba

Still to go with a chance but not as strong
-Sumiyoshi*
-Hendrickx**

*Needs 2nd or higher in a very tough field. However, she got a 216 in France, so if she is indeed 2nd and finds herself in a tie break situation (I know, I know, weird things would need to happen for this, don't yell at me), she has a good shot.
**Also needs 2nd or higher. If she's 2nd in the tough Finlandia field and finds herself in a tie, she'd need to better Rinka's score today (her NHK score was about the same as Rinka's COC score).

Because weirder things have happened and sometimes the women forget they're not competing in the men's event: Isabeau is not completely out of it (I know, I KNOW, she'll most likely be an alternate, I'm just playing with all possibilities). Chances are very low, but if the women "men" next week, then it's possible.

And last, Petrokina's spot has yet to be assigned. If Samodelkina picks it up, she's also not completely out but she'd need 3rd or higher and if she's third she'd need to score 208+ to beat Rinka in a tie break (this is assuming that Glenn and Chiba take first and second in either order and neither Sumiyoshi nor Hendrickx place above her).

Alright, sorry for the essay. Next week's post will be way more straightforward ("these 6 go, these 3 alternates, bye")

The problem with Alysa continuing to use her free from last year is she will never have a better performance of it than worlds, so every time she performs it, it gets compared to her worlds performance. That program has already peaked. So I’m sure hoping she shows up at GPF with a new one, even though it’s a bit risky. She doesn’t seem to care if she wins though so why not go for it.

Because she hasn't been tweaking Last Dance to make it score better, I am guessing she is also working the Gaga program. To improve her FS while reworking Gaga would be counterproductive and she's not doing that. I could be wrong. It depends on how flexible her muscle memory and other mental aspects of performing are.

She should work on the gaga program now as she said she’s going to keep promise permanently. The Grand Prix final is still three weeks away so she’s got time to get the gaga up and running.

Because she hasn't been tweaking Last Dance MacArthur Park to make it score better, I am guessing she is also working the Gaga program. To improve her FS while reworking Gaga would be counterproductive and she's not doing that. I could be wrong. It depends on how flexible her muscle memory and other mental aspects of performing are.
She's already said they have a new music cut for the Gaga program nearly complete, so it seems quite clear they've been working on that program and only rolled out MacArthur Park again for SkAm because Gaga isn't quite ready yet. I'm fairly confident she'll bring Lady Gaga to the GPF and see how the revamped version is received by the international judges with little concern for her placement at the GPF.

Without getting back her 3axel Alysa is really at the mercy of other skaters like Amber and Kaori to make mistakes to have a chance to win. Even here a clean Rinka wins close to ten points.

Rinka yes has good skating skills, but I don’t find her particularly artistic in her performance or interpretation. She was pretty stone faced the whole time. That said, Alysa didn’t sparkle as much as usual this time either.
I thought the entire event was crap. A lot of skaters looking like they just weren't feeling it. So many errors. Personally I liked both Gubanova and Alysa better than Rinka.

Rinka is a much stronger skater than Alysa, even though Alysa's program was more engaging.
I thought Alysa looked like she was giving about 90% effort. She also looked very slow from my video view, but I know that can often look much different in person. I think she's bored with this program, and it doesn't work as well without 100% energy.

Rinka looked faster and smoother on the ice. I don't understand all her PCS scores vs. Alysa's.
