San Jose, California will host 2018 U.S. Nationals (Dec. 29, 2017 - Jan. 7, 2018)

For anyone planning to head to U.S. Nationals Thursday through Sunday (like me), Travel Zoo just posted a Top 20 deal today for the Fairmont Hotel San Jose. I just booked those days for $159.00 a night (non-refundable). I stayed at the Fairmont during Nationals when it was last held there. It's beautiful. The only down side is the hotel is about 0.8 of a mile walk to the SAP Center. However, I enjoyed the exercise in the morning and after sitting in the arena all day.

Thanks! I just booked. It was cheaper than my 3 nights at the Marriott even using "points" for one night!

And then it gave me this info

$15 & up – US Figure Skating Championships in San Jose
Price Level 2 and 3 seats cost $15-$55 (reg. $22-$88), and tickets are available for nine available sessions Jan. 2-7.

Events include the senior men's, ladies' and pairs short program as well as the Smucker's Skating Spectacular, which features all the champions and medalists from the competition in a fun, theatrical ice show.

This event determines the U.S. champions and serves as a final step in determining the teams for the World Figure Skating Championships.

Note: Additional fees of $1.25 per ticket will apply, but that's standard on all ticket purchases.

Book by Dec. 31.

Wish I had seen this before I purchased Dance Short, but I am going to see if it works for Mens. (And it did, but I did giggle... I remember all the "Hype" they tried to sell tickets "based on our success with Gymnastics this will sell out in the All Event sales so you really need to buy". Uh...there are LOTS of seats for Men's short!)

@mtnskater, thank you SO much for the TravelZoo tip! I reserved my room from the 4th-8th. Woo! Otherwise I was trying to figure out what the hell I was gonna do because I didn't want to bother renting a car.

I'm wondering if I should bother buying tickets yet or not because I'll be volunteering... maybe just wait til day of and see?

I was thinking about coming, after seeing those offers.
However. an $800.00 + RT airfare is going to preclude that, I'm afraid.

Whoa, that is insane!

I just got my tickets but I had a ton of points on Alaska due to their merger with Virgin America, so I didn't have to pay for my airfare. Only $11.20 in taxes. Woohoo. Granted, it was just Burbank to San Jose.

Are we doing an FSU get-together? This is my birthday trip so I wanted to go have a nice dinner at some point, since I'll be footloose and fancy free aka kid-less. lol

@Lanie I'd be down for a get-together, but idk what kind of food/drinks. There's too much good food down there - although I haven't been to many of the nice restaurants.
My family has eaten at Il Fornaio (near the Fairmont). It was delicious, but maybe a bit pricy. Same with Original Joe's. Whispers (crepes) is nice, but very casual. 1st Street and Santa Clara street have a lot of dining as well. The stuff on Santa Clara street is between the hotels and SAP, so it might be the best choice.

(Also, Burbank airport is da bomb and I'm sad I can't use it more)

So glad it helped @Lanie and @Carolla5501! If either of you or others staying at the Fairmont would like to get together to walk back after the evening sessions, let me know. I'd love to have company for that walk, especially at night.

Definitely, I'd love that. I don't know where I am sitting yet as I've not bought tickets (as I said I will probably be volunteering). It would be way more fun than walking alone.

Great! I'm flying in Thursday for the men's short and weekend events. We need to designate a place for Fairmont guests to meet when the evening events are over to walk back. Maybe someone more familiar with the arena can designate a meeting place?

@mtnskater The Fairmont lobby is really nice, with a bar, a sushi bar, a spa, etc. There's a big staircase behind the elevators that has a landing overlooking 1st street. There's also an alley between the two buildings of the Fairmont where you can meet. Or the plaza between the Fairmont, the PBS/NBC building, and the art museum that has some benches in it.

I think mtnskater means a place in the arena to meet so they can walk back to the Fairmont together at the end of competitions (when it is dark outside).

Well if we met at the bar at the Fairmont and walked over we could set a return spot. But it might be easiest to meet at the exit of the arena. I just can't remember which exit it was that I used last time

Thanks for the tip. I just snagged great center ice lower bowl seats for men's and ladies' short at $40 each.

I'm finally going to buy my tickets on Monday!! I can't wait!

I am sure it has been discussed in the thread but I didn't see it when I quickly looked through but what side are the judges on?

I bought all event tickets last November but have not yet received the email telling me I can print them. I've called and left a message, but no reply. Is anyone else waiting for the magic email?

I just went to the SAP Center web site and found my tickets in the Account Manager section.

Just got a response to my volunteer application today on how they are doing:

Good Afternoon –
On behalf of U.S. Figure Skating, thank you for submitting a volunteer application for the 2018 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships in San Jose.
Over the next few days we will be processing the applications and communicating next steps to approved volunteers via email on Friday, December 1st.
If you have immediate questions or concerns, please email [email protected].
Thank you,
Events Department
U.S. Figure Skating

Interesting that USFS is handling vol assignments. Usually, that is handled within the LOC...i guess the LOC this year is just managing the site/hotel/transportation logistics.

It has recently been reported that a scheduling problem at American Airlines has resulted in far too many pilots on leave during the holiday period (dates undefined), with the possibility that a lot of flights may have to be canceled. The airline says it is offering bonus pay. Details are a bit lacking at the moment, but this may be an issue for those of us heading to San Jose on American.

I've started a thread in Off the Beaten Track:

Glad that I live in a Southwest hub (I've had a few problems, but other airlines seem a lot worse). I actually have frequent flyer miles on American (originally with USAir) and could use them for a reward, but they never have decent flights (i.e. convenient times, nonstop) to where I want to go. And the flights I would want to take are always blacked out for rewards or require the highest mileage amounts. Grrr.
