The Olympics are not what they used to be. But I will gladly root for athletes that have their careers hanging on by a thread and don't make much or any money.

You'll enjoy the skating then, because only a very small handful of Olympic skaters actually make any money from skating. Most are in debt, or their parents are in debt, from paying all the expenses to get them to that point.

The hubby was right about Sarah. But he did he predict her quitting so soon after? ;)

Money is one of the reasons I've soured on the big team sports in North America other than maybe the NHL. But I barely watch hockey anymore.

Also there are too many sports in the Winter Olympics and especially the summer Olympics
He sure was. No, he did not predict her exit. He got me interested in figure skating. But he stopped watching when the Grand Prix's started. He couldn't figure out why they kept doing the same thing over and over. Oh well. (X-hubby now :)

I agree with you about the OLYS not being what they used to be. Makes me sad. And, I will never understand the "Team Events" Given there are no "teams" across the disciplines.
And IMO it takes the shine right off the actual event. And this year it is going to be such a crap-shoot with all the closings, the Chinese Government taking people to an undisclosed location if they have a positive test. I saw an athlete on TV crying. It was decided that she needed to be isolated. There was no appeal. No further test. And, she had no clue where she was. How frightening. I don't remember who she was, but she looked terrified.

I will have to ask my daughter to ask our OGM winner friend what he thinks about what is happening. He now has two kids so it might look different to him, but I think he would go in a heartbeat.

He commentated a couple of years. My daughter's mother-in-law said he needs to learn some more adjectives!

I have no doubts that any athlete that is taken to a Chinese isolation site will be treated well. The Chinese have no interest in an international incident.

While it sucks everyone was told they would be isolated if positive

From your mouth to g-d's ear!

Your daughter's Olympic gold medal friend it's probably on happy with a lot of things about the Olympics and the world these days.

Taking a female athlete into isolation? Where is the ioc in all of this? I wonder if they're proud of where they put the olympics.

Taking a lady athlete who tested positive for Coronavirus to a location away from everybody and she doesn't know where she is sounds criminal to me. No second test? Where is her Embassy?

Anybody remember the Chinese tennis player that disappeared for a few weeks a couple months ago? How soon they forget.

The good news is I'm sure we will get some thrilling moments from these Winter Olympics. And let's hope we get lucky with very few athletes testing positive for the virus. Maybe it's time we stopped treating athletes who test positive like there a leper carrying the plague.
I am sure all the athletes competing are fully vaxxed and I'm sure their coaches are fully vaxxed. And for those who are not fully vaccinated they have natural immunity (Gubanova) which is greater protection than the vaccinations according to many
studies.

Very true.

I think I remember a story from a year or two ago where Nastya T's parents had spent literally hundreds of thousands of dollars on her career.
The stress on the skater and the family must be off the charts.

I have doubts lots of doubts if you look at that country's history. The main hope would be not to create an international incident like you stated. But wherever these athletes are taken and especially the minor athletes there should be adults from their country in the room next to their room communicating with them. The word isolation is a scary word especially when you're in a country you don't speak the language or understand any of the natives.

I lived in China for many, many years. You have no idea how amazing Chinese people are. It's also one of the safest country out there. On top of everything, Olympic athletes are like ambassadors from their respective countries, therefore they will be treated with the highest of respect.
About the nonsense of the athlete crying and taken away...I would cry too if my Olympic dream is taken away from me because I test positive. But the insinuation that he/she was crying because they nasty Chinese were throwing he/she in a cold cell without a mobile phone etc + let`s hope China behaves, etc, it`s beyond ridiculous.

And then that’s a consideration that should have taken before going to the Olympics.

It was known before hand that if they got covid they would be moved to quarantine.

And other countries have done the same. I am not Saying the Chinese are human rights angels they aren’t the UGHARS.

But the people moving to quarantine are not going to be imprisoned forever more the Chinese aren’t looking for an international incident.

Everyone who stepped foot in China for the Olympics agreed to be moved to isolation if they tested positive before stepping foot on Chinese soil.

I have no doubt the Chinese people are wonderful and amazing. But if there was an 'international incident' no one will know because this isolated non-Chinese speaking person may not have internet access, has everything to loose and will not be able to access basic support in their own language. All it takes is one jerk.

Let's hope everything goes well.

IMO - it is a total mess. I totally agree with you. It is a free-for-all. I hope the OLYS are great. I still can't believe that they are going forward with it. Between the lack of practice time (for the last year), the difficulty the athletes have had training, and then going into China. I think the results should come with a huge **.

There friends and family then will ask where is our daughter/son.

The Chinese are very very invested in this turning out to be a good look how wonderful China is advertisement. They aren’t going to mess with that.

Agreed.

Hoping all goes well is all we can do.

Is it true that there won't be any fans not even in figure skating? I mean in a 10,000-seat Arena you can't put a thousand people in there who can prove they've been vaccinated to create some kind of atmosphere?

You make an interesting point about an asterisk but I don't think so since this is going to be most of these athletes only time at the Winter Games and if they deserve a medal or something good that should be rewarded. These athletes are super dedicated and should be admired. It's not their fault the world situation is what it is with the bug.

Because it happens elsewhere does make it better in China, and stop making it about the Chinese people. This is about the actions of the Chinese government.
I think sometimes people forget the differentiate between the people and the government and that is true in this situation. It's the government and not the people.

Once again the Chinese government is viewing this as a propoganda opportunity to show the world how wonderful China is. They aren’t going to have a situation where people are kidnapped.

They are not stupid.

Once again, the Chinese Gov doesn't need this opportunity to show how wonderful China is, no more or less than any other country in the history of the Olympic Games with their fancy opening and closing ceremony. Once normality kicks in again, you can travel to China and see for yourself how wonderful China is, even after the games and without "propaganda".

"They are not stupid". No, you are stupid if you haven't realized yet that China has been one of the most diplomatic countries when dealing with international affairs. And they are pretty smart in every situation. So, all this "they won't touch our athletes" "they won't do anything stupid" "they won't risk an international scandal" "let's hope all goes well" it's beyond ridiculous. I can only guess where the majority of these posters are from.

You must think us very naive, or gullible.

Yes, I think you are very naive and gullible.

Edit to add, that this is my last post on this subject. I won't go back and forth on this because I have already expressed what I think about this topic.

I was saying this in regards to folks that are saying China WOULD a hurt the athletes.

And while the Chinese people are great and have an incredible culture and civilization.

the Chinese government does have human rights abuses.

But they are also very smart and would not create an international incident.

The they are not stupid was me actually trying to say I thought it was a ridiculous idea that they would abuse the athletes.

I think the best answer to all of it is to have canceled the OLYS, or moved them 2 years ago to a different location.
Our athletes are not safe. We are giving China a world stage that is so backward I cannot even believe it. They (the government) are not nice people, and they don't place nice with others.

I realize that skating at the Olympics is a dream for these athletes. I get all that. However, will the dream have been worth it if more athletes disappear? And how many need to disappear before we take notice and call them to account.

Nancy Pelosi was on TV this morning warning the athletes to not get political. I think the definition of "political" is not clear..........leaves a whole lot of room for interpretation.

Then I listened to Kaitlen Jenner being interviewed. If you can find the interview I highly recommend it. She competed in 3 OLYS, Including the OLYS where the Israeli athletes were taken out and killed. I know that was Germany, but the incident illustrates the type of bad things that can happen in bad places.

I will look for That interview with Jenner. I know she won the Olympics one time but I did not know she was in three Olympic Games including the one where the Jews were slaughtered.

I did not know Fancy Nancy said do not get political to the American athletes. I would not expect any American Olympic athlete to say anything about Chinese oppression or anything like that.

I think these athletes just want to go to the games to live their dreams and get back home ASAP.

It's sad but it's just the way it is.

The problem with canceling big events like the Olympics is by the time you come back to it in a year or two we could be in the same virus situation. They delayed the Summer Olympics one year and it was the same situation may be worse.

I am going to be really obnoxious here. If you had a huge scale of justice to measure the significance of figure skaters living their dream of skating on Olympic dream, and on the other side you put the genocide, human rights oppression here is a list

China's Disregard for Human Rights
  • Repression in Xinjiang.
  • Fear of Arbitrary Arrest.
  • Religious Freedom Abuses.
  • Stifling Freedom of Expression.
  • Forced Labor.
  • Assault on Hong Kong's Autonomy.
  • Severe Restrictions in Tibet.
So a handful of athletes would not have their Olympics balanced against the disregard for Human Rights.

I do understand, it is hard, disappointing, and on and on. But I don't think a skate at the Olympics is worth supporting China. How many lives = one skater's dream, the expense, the hard work, etc?

Thank you for clarifying it.

What you say is hard hitting and true. But I don't think the issue is with the athletes it's with the IOC that sold the Olympics twice in 14 years to Bejiing. The question is why? My guess is money.

We have 15 more days to go with these Winter Olympics let's hope it goes well.
