R.I.P. Senator John McCain

Trump is sending a group of Generals and others to "represent him" at the funeral services.
They include the Vice-President, chief of staff John Kelly, Defense Secretary James Mattis and national security adviser John Bolton.

Reading in the WSJ, John McCain’s mother is still living at 106 years old...

I saw that on TV last year, and again last week. He had good genes. Too bad about the brain cancer. It must be so hard for his mother! That is the problem with having a very long life. You have to witness deaths of loved ones who are much younger than you.

The WH has also issued a statement praising McCain for his service, undoubtably due to the criticism he received.

Coward in Chief!
They showed five times that 45 was asked about John McCain by reporters and he just sat there like a fat slob. If they would have asked how he felt about not being invited to the funeral, I bet he would have spoken. He thought McCain was getting too much coverage, so his pettiness and disgusting behavior had to be the center of attention.

John McCain's final letter to America:

I may not have agreed with some of his politics but he was at least willing to try to reach across the aisle to his fellow senators regardless of party affiliation when he felt the need arose to do that. He truly cared about America and all Americans and he will be sadly missed.

RIP Senator McCain - you were a true American hero.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned before, but McCain was a major part of the U.S. normalizing relations with Vietnam (and was willing to the political hit from “draft dodger” Bill Clinton) in the mid-1990s.

Surprisingly enough, this article says that Vietnam is likely the most pro-U.S. country in Southeast Asia and this recent Pew Research Poll shows that 84% of Vietnamese people have a favorable view of the U.S.

Thanks for posting this. I read each one.

Not to get too political but I was all prepared to cross the aisle & vote for McCain for president before he picked his running mate. It wasn't that I didn't like Obama, it was just that I didn't know Obama & I did know McCain. (aside - I came to love Obama.) I don't regret he didn't beat Obama but I do regret he never became president at all. One thing about McCain - whatever promises he ran on he would do his best to keep. He wouldn't have done a 180.

I think about this in terms of when Bush won in 2000. I like to believe the world would be different/better if McCain had been the winner then. Maybe/probably not, but it's nice to dream. ;)

We probably would still have gone to war with Iraq, and certainly with Afghanistan. I'd like to think the Patriot Act would not have passed with so many opportunities to invade peoples' civil liberties, but I'm not sure. As much as I respected the Senator, economic issues were not his strong suit and the crash of '08 would probably still have happened....

Counterfactuals are always hard.

But this outrages me: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...77c6e4-aa35-11e8-b1da-ff7faa680710_story.html

It's apparently not enough for the ultra-Trumpies that he's dead, they have to crap all over him with their insane conspiracy theories. Note to assholes: it's not the Senator's fault that he makes the current president look even more like a self-obsessed narcissistic crooked know-nothing than he already does.

Is it ultra Trumpies? I remember when Axle Annie was spreading the theory that someone killed Scalia, and she is really not an ultra Trumpie. People just aren't all that rational.

But there's a good chance he would have had different advisors, so maybe he would have gotten different advice and from what I'm reading, hearing and seeing, it looks like he would have also listened to the "other side's" concerns. Even if he wouldn't have done so openly, he would have heard about it and he might have taken it into consideration.

The "Ultra-Trumpie" who was attempting to defend the POTUS' actions and behaviour with Don Lemon last night, acted like a dithering fool; making the situation even worse!

This article could have gone a few different places because of the subjects and Manafort's role in the Trump campaign, but it really does speak to the kind of person McCain was.

John McCain’s Epiphany About Paul Manafort
Manafort saw managing the 2008 Republican convention as almost a birthright. But McCain denied him the job. He couldn’t abide Manafort’s pro-Russian clients—and told him so.

Some Republicans are resisting the suggestion to rename the Senate building for McCain. https://apnews.com/675c0a7121c24bab99eb84601c2555e1

No matter what Russell did in regards to Senate rules, the article's short paragraph referring to his racism is reason alone anyone who works in this building should have been ashamed to have an office there. It should never have been named after Russell in the first place but that it was shows how little the Civil Rights Act really changed.
But now that they have the opportunity to rename it, Senators should be rushing to do that rather than oppose it. No matter what one thought of McCain's politics, he is a much, much better choice!

Trump hated McCain, so it is not surprising that some (most?) republicans are resisting naming the senate building after him. They may be afraid of 'wrath of the Trump'.

Except that there is nothing to be afraid of. Even if they didn't figure it out by themselves you'd think that if nothing else McCain taught them that much.
