Patty Duke died

RIP Patty Duke. I agree -- her Helen Keller was an incredible performance (in a truly great movie, IMO)

May she RIP.

I remember her most as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker. An incredible performance.

Tony and US Academy Awards for that role, an Emmy for the US TV movie "My Sweet Charlie", and so many other wonderful performances, including IMHO "Valley of the Dolls" - though much maligned in the same way that Faye Dunaway's "Mommie Dearest" has been.

Her bravery in confronting and sharing her abuse during childhood by her agents/guardians, and her fierce advocacy for awareness of bipolar illness may be her finest contributions to society - along with her talented children Sean and Mackenzie Astin.

RIP.

I watched The Patty Duke Show growing up (in syndication mostly) and was a big fan. So sad as she was so young.

Sad news. :( The Patty Duke Show is still on in syndication in the early morning hours. I fell asleep with the TV on last night and awoke to an episode a little after 5 this morning -- Robert Goulet was a guest star (as a biology teacher who Patty had a crush on). She had many great performances in her career. Condolences to her family and may she rest in peace.

RIP - I so admired her. Grew up with the Patty Duke show. Incredible actress. Amazing human. She could have wallowed in her tragedies, but did not. I will miss knowing she is in my world.

Tragic. Gone way too soon. RIP. And yet another legend passes away at the age of 69 in 2016 (David Bowie, Alan Rickman, etc)

The Patty Duke Show was originally shown way before I was born. However, I recently bought the boxset on DVD and am part way through series 1. Fabulous show. Patty is survived by her screen father from the show, William Schallert, who is now 93 (he also played Carson Drew in the Nancy Drew Mysteries during the 1970's)

The Miracle Worker and Valley of the Dolls have already been mentioned. Patty was also superb in Me, Natalie, Billie, A Christmas Memory, A Killer Among Friends, and Cries from the Heart. As well as being an advocate on mental health issues, she also served as the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1985 to 1988

My absolute favorite Duke role was in "A Christmas Memory", Truman Capote's memoir about his youth and his beloved, older, slow and loving Sook. She was so touching in that wonderful, little Christmas film.

Two guys used to do this bad lounge singer act for fun at a few parties way back when. "The Patty Duke Show" theme was one of their best. The lyrics still make me smile thinking about it.

Meet Cathy, who's lived most everywhere,
From Zanzibar to Barclay Square.
But Patty's only seen the sight.
A girl can see from Brooklyn Heights --
What a crazy pair!

But they're cousins,
Identical cousins all the way.
One pair of matching bookends,
Different as night and day.

Where Cathy adores a minuet,
The Ballet Russes, and crepe suzette,
Our Patty loves to rock and roll,
A hot dog makes her lose control --
What a wild duet!

Still, they're cousins,
Identical cousins and you'll find,
They laugh alike, they walk alike,
At times they even talk alike --

You can lose your mind,
When cousins are two of a kind.

Here it is - that memorable intro to the show

One of the best episodes of the Patty Duke Show was the one in which Sammy Davis Jr. appeared (called: 'Will the Real Sammy Davis Please Hang Up?'). Here is a link to the episode: Part 1 of 2, Part 2 of 2
