Papadakis CIzeron #4 - Happiness Does Not Wait

The SD was a real fun to watch! Definitely a fave one too :D. The costumes, the music, everything! Now heading to see the gala, cannot wait!

On a side note, I really don't know why they get criticized for their SD so much. I really, really liked this season's SD and it felt a little bit like after two seasons of criticism, the judges have decided to pick up on it because it was a way for V/M to beat them even though this season, their SD wasn't lacking.
!

Agreed! I loved their SD when it debuted at the French GP, INCLUDING loving Gabriella's costume, and it seemed everyone else did as well. Then comes the big meeting at NHK with V/M and the criticisms began everywhere, including Gabby cannot do happy or Swing or some nonsense. I'll bet 5,671 of their close associates gave them feedback which would drive anyone crazy, and cause doubts. They should have just worked on their levels and changed things as they and their coaches saw fit. Isn't that what they do with their free dances? I loved V/M SD and thought it was best, but it didn't need to be that many points ahead.

Hope that makes sense. They should do Olympic season what they think is best, of course considering the coaches and judges feedback. I highly doubt they'd come up with a BAD SD. Really. I'll just say it: As the Worlds competition in fact played out performance-wise, on the ice, they probably would have won gold if not for the season-long, anxiety-inducing, short program craziness, IMO.

This is when skating really does itself no favours. The Gold was gone after the SD. V/M were never going to be caught even if they made major errors. P/C were amazing & I'm so proud of them.
As a huge fan of both V/M & P/C I'm both happy for Tessa & Scott & sad for P/C. To skate that well & not get the Gold must be heart breaking.

H.

I agree.I loved it at the first viewing. The costume was beautiful .It was sooo different for them.Even the SLSS where Gabby was working the quirky facial expressions and the weird lunge which people thought was a mistake. It certainly changed. I did like the worlds version but I feel maybe they took a little piece of the character out of it? The SD is key .They really need to lead with a good SD.

Nice post from Guillaume on Instagram. Their performance was the most intense yet, everyone could feel it (well most people) and it seems it's because they gave it all like never before.

I know they ended up second but this weekend felt like a victory haha.. :)
And I hope the high he got from this performance convinces them to continue after 2018 (you never know, if they win maybe they'll retire!)

Yes. They should listen to feedback but ONLY SO FAR. I loved that weird lunge, as you say. And am I correct Guillame only made mistakes over the season in the short dance? I make mistakes too when I'm criticized to death, and I do not do anything with the whole world watching. LOL!

P/C had a higher score at Trophee de France in November. Gabby and Guillame, listen to yourselves, to thine own self be true, etc., etc.

Yes like last year after the europeans, judges told them their short dance (waltz) was too dramatic : well they went even more dramatic for Worlds and it worked fabulously. I too enjoyed greatly their swing when it was joyous and quirky, too bad they chnaged that and even then didn't manage to find the right balance to please everyone in the end. I wonder how the Rumba will go.

I'm not even that into ice dance but Papadakis/Cizeron are magical. Their FD was engrossing: I was riveted to every second. I've rarely seen two people pour so much of themselves into a skate.....no holding back, no pacing, no setting up an element, just performing as if the competition and rules don't exist. The physicality in his skating is unparalleled, but her skating has been the surprise this season: so much more open and abandoned. For me, their performances, perfect or not, are miles more interesting than Virtue and Moir's.

well with their score in the free, expect the 4th different version of the same program from 2015 next year.

A very cute kids interview in French but actually quite revealing and turns out more intimate than most interviews I've read about them.

At what age did you meet?
Gaby:my mum, a skating teacher, fell for Guillaume. Convinced we were made for each other, she threw him in my path: we were 8 yrs old! Since, we're inseparable.
Guillaume: at the beginning, I absolutely didn't want to be bothered by a girl at my arm ! Finally, we have more fun at two on the ice !

Inseparable:
Gaby: Like my twin ! We both keep a kind eye on the other. We know in advance what the other one is gonna do. After 12 years together, between 3 to 7 hours a day spent training, our bond is unbelievable.
Guillaume: Like my big sister ! We know each other by heart; better than we know our parents, friends or even our respective partners.

What is your secret to be successful ?
Gaby: When there is the slight issue, the slight disagreement, it needs to be immediately talked out to avoid becoming a bigger problem. But generally there aren't any. And we understand each other instantly, without having to talk.
Guillaume is discreet and easy to get along with, not complicated.
Guillaume: As soon as I hear the tone of her voice, as soon as I take her hand, or I hear the sound of her blades on the ice which indicates whether she is light or nervous, I guess her mood. Then, I know how to act or react.
Gaby: Always being attentive towards each other allows to make the other person happy. When he's happy, he achieves beautiful things, even if they are difficult like some of our elements.
Guillaume: And one needs to always remain patient when the other one doesn't progress, or is feeling down. Constantly knowing how to support each other.

Have you ever wanted to live together ?
Gaby: Never ! Outside the ice, to each is own life. And without necessarily telling it to the other either: the best way to recharge before going back training.
Guillaume: No! We are made to live together...but, on the ice !

I wish I knew someone that well !

Thoroughly enjoyed their free dance. I hope they (and V&M and S&S) can do even better next season. It'll be an interesting showdown.

Short french interview made right after World where they talk about their disappointment in their SD perf.
http://www.programme-tv.net/news/sp...iennent-sur-leur-deuxieme-place-aux-mondiaux/
Short summary about the loss of their title:
They basically congratulate V/M saying they had great results all season long with their SD. They don't go along with the French Federation in blaming the judges because it's up to them to work and adapt their choices and skating esp. in the SD to be more competitive.
They take full responsibility for underperforming in the SD saying it was not up to par with what they were able to achieve in training. They didn't skate a 100%. Hence their disappointment.
And to show they feel alright with the results Gaby posted this:

It really shows their sportsmanship IMO and I'm happy they don't go along with the stupid statement made by Didier Gailhaguet. He's gonna end up doing more harm than good to P/C if he keeps on.

Ugh I wanna punch Didier and even FranceTV, they are all unsufferable... :revenge:

Well, I guess it would be the same with most of the younger skaters. They belong to a totally different generation than Gordeeva/Grinkov.

Quite a shame though that skaters of this generation don't know much about great skaters from other eras. Not a knock on P/C specifically since they aren't the only ones. I will say that skaters have to work very hard and so likely don't really have time to view videos from past generations. Nor do they probably watch many videos of their peers either.

Still, it's like young baseball stars of today not knowing who Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio or Yogi Berra are. I doubt that many young baseball players don't know at least the names and accomplishments of baseball stars from the past. I make the analogy simply because I think it would be a great thing for both fs fans and skaters of today to know and understand more about figure skating's past and how the sport developed and evolved over the years.

About P/C specifically: They were wonderful at Euros and Worlds. And based on the performances, I feel the score should have been much closer, or either with P/C edging V/M on the basis of P/C's brilliance in their F/D. For most of the season, I have been fairly neutral about V/M vs. P/C, but the way P/C stuck with their guns and their vision this season is praiseworthy. They have conducted themselves so exemplary on and off the ice this season.

Re-posting my below thoughts from Dance Hall thread:

P/C's vision has taken hold beautifully to where their FD became seamless and a whole work of art, rather than two disparate halves. I realize that some people are turned off by their different music choice in the first half. But now somehow I really get it, and I think it has become a remarkable part of their tremendous artistic journey. They are very special people and ice dancers. I bow down to P/C for their talent and for the way they have conducted themselves on and off the ice this season. :respec:

P/C are magic on ice when they are in the zone. And to get there it takes hard work, tremendous skill, belief, dedication and vision. Those qualities P/C have got in spades. They are very young yet of course (although I doubt they enjoy Scott referencing them as 'kids' :p). P/C will certainly benefit from gaining more and more experience under their belts going forward. And they of course need to continually work on improving some of the technical aspects of their skating. Granted that their SD never quite fully gelled. But all credit due for how they worked on it, made improvements and performed the best they possibly could with it, giving it a lot more verve, energy and commitment as the season progressed.

I am eager to see what direction P/C will go in next season. I can hardly wait.

:cheer2:It's a weird feeling because in the end even though they're not walking away with the title, it still feels like they won. .

That's exactly it, they were the winners, despite not winning the title and I expect VM will be starting to realise it too!
I would put money on Gabi and Gui winning the OGM, they are taking Ice dance to a new level, something VM might well have underestimated when they planned their return!
