UPDATED: OMFG . . . Adam Rippon, Tonya Harding and Mirai Nagasu are on the DWTS' all-athlete cast

OMG, Abdul-Jabbar and Ogunbowale :inavoid:

"Legendary" doesn't necessarily mean positive. Billy the Kid was legendary. Bonnie and Clyde were legendary.
Tonya was the 2nd ever (and 1st American ) female skater to land a 3axel in competition, and the first female ever do land a 3axel combo in the short. She went to 2 Olympics, won 2 national titles (the 2nd was wrongfully stripped ), a world silver medal, and was 2nd in her only pro competition to Surya (who did a more difficult program) after 5 years away from competition. That would qualify her as a legend and I wish people would remember her for the amazing athlete she was and not for what her ex and his friends did to Nancy. Tonya was truly a better skater than Nancy was, and if people would just watch the skating and not listen to the press/media, they would be able to see it. Tonya wasn't elegant, but Nancy wasn't either ( the dresses were, the skating wasn't).

4 week season - 3 2 hour programs and the final is only 1 hour. It will only be on one night a week (no results show). I was hoping for Nadia , but they went with the lady basketball player from Notre Dame instead.

OK, so of the 3 skaters on this miniscule cast. Tonya, Adam and Mirai. Trying to review them....

Only Tonya has stood on a World podium?

And each of them was a US Nats Champion just once? (although Tonya's was stripped.)

Tonya and Mirai made 2 Olys Teams, and Adam 1 (barely).

Just trying to sort out who has accomplished what.

Now, how many skaters (figure, not including Ono) have been on DWTS? Yamaguchi, Hamil, Lysacek, White, Davis, Kerrigan and now these 3?

It isn't based on accomplishments, per se. Mirai and Adam have a lot of star quality, unlike many of the "stars" on this show (Chaz Bono? Tom DeLay? Various Bachelors?). Plus their accomplishments are pretty good. Both are National champions and Olympic medalists and Mirai made history with her triple axel. It will bring me in as a regular viewer who otherwise has rarely watched this show.

HOLY CRAP.. that is a SMALL CAST... wait, its almost May... why is DWTS starting just now??? Im so out of the loop... why is the cast this small and why is it mid-April and this hasn't started yet????

Whats wrong with Adam's partner.. she seems like a cutey.....
This is Season 26, and all athletes will be performing. It will premiere Monday, April 30th on ABC at 8 p.m. Eastern (7p.m. Central)

Ouch, major negative reaction to Tonya in the Twitter comments. And really - calling her a figure skating LEGEND???? Peggy Fleming is a legend. Scott Hamilton is a legend. Michelle Kwan is a legend. Yu Na Kim and Mao Asada are legends. That's an insult to the legendary skaters who played by their rules and busted their tails to get where they did and also to her skating competitors on DWTS. But they have to say something to stoke the ratings fire.

That said, very happy for Mirai that she got her wish and I hope she and Adam kick Tonya's booty.
So do I, Yazmeen. I'm happy for Mirai and Adam. I hope they bring the house down!

ETA: Strike that. I think I said it backwards but who cares! I hope they bring down the house!

Happy for Mirai and Adam but bummed that it is such a short season and that they have to be on a season with Tonya. 4 weeks is so short - usually the judges don't even give out tens before week four. Interesting that there is no Val, Maks or Peeta - wonder if they passed on the short season. I like Alan for Mirai, hope they make a cute team. Oh well, I guess I should be happy that they scrapped the teen version that they had originally planned... that sounded like a trainwreck!

I think it’s funny how some were celebrating her not getting it because she was too desperate or whatever and she ends up getting what she wants.

I was tempted to say haters to the left, but you said it better.

I wonder how the figure skating community's powers-that-be feel about Adam and Mirai performing with Tonya.

It's almost like skating in the same exhibition with her.

I wonder if there are younger people in charge (not young but younger), who wouldn’t mind as much because they didn’t have to deal with Tonya personally. It seems those who are the most bitter about Tonya these days are people who lived through it first hand and had to deal with her and are frustrated that people on the outside don’t know what a headache and how embarrassing it all was.

How will it work with Adam and Mirai both on the Stars on Ice tour? I know Evan did both. Anyone remember how he did it?

The pros travel with the skaters on tour and they fit in practice around the SOI schedule. They fly back to LA after the Sunday performance and rehearse/perform on the Monday DWTS show. Adam and Mirai will have it much easier than Meryl, Charlie, and especially Evan because this time there are only 4 weeks of DWTS, and for 2 of those SOI is on the west coast so travel time will be minimal.

Angie, I know how it feels to be confused - I'm often that way until my husband explains things. You seem like a nice gal so maybe you just also need a nice husband to help you get through the confusion. I met my lovely Corky at a retreat my parents sent me to after some unfortunate experimentation in my youth. I hope you can find someone as great as him.

You are right, Adam's partner is a cutey, I wish I could watch but of course, my husband and I are boycotting. I invite the rest of you to join us.

Does this group of people include the FSU posters who are enraged that Tonya is not behind bars and/or has not been executed for crimes for which she should never be forgiven?

This might be fun to watch because, despite having recognized talent, Tonya was NEVER considered graceful, never trained consistently, and never did group numbers in skating shows like Kristi, Nancy, Meryl, etc :EVILLE:
Tonya actually made fun of her lack of gracefulness when Tom B interviewed her briefly during this morning's reveal. She said she has a lot of "bad habits" to unlearn. At least she's not being unbearably arrogant.

Marai at least is a better representatative of USA values then the awful Ashley Wagner, who would of done nothing but say liberal socialite messages. Having Adam on the show is bad enough, hopefully Marai will maintain her values and not have him rub off all over her even more then it all ready has.

I don't know who Ogunbufhalwrje is but the name is very intriguing!

Nagasu's given name is MIRAI. Not 'MARAI.

The cast isn't that small. They have 10 couples on this time, but aside from Season 9, which was 16 and Seasons 1 and 2, which were six and 10 respectively, the cast has typically ranged from 11-13 couples. This season is not that much smaller than that.

Well, Morry “she pulled the strap from her dress on purpose at Skate America” Stillwell used to post here. ;)

In all seriousness though, I think most people here who are less enthused with Tonya are more angry at the rewriting of events, annoyance with Tonya herself, and the further demonization of Nancy and Tonya’s other contemporaries and the skating world in general in equally simple and discriminatory ways that others argue Tonya was a victim of in order to propel Tonya’s rehabilitation of her reputation.
