Netflix/Prime/Hulu Discoveries

Lyla was IMO the worst character on Friday Night Lights. It didn't help that she was played by the worst actress on the show, either. Best show ever IMO.

You like Luke more than Vince!?!?! Luke was never one of my faves.

I can see how you could find Becky annoying. What I liked about her was how realistic she seemed. And I liked that the show did the abortion storyline with her character, because again, whether you approve or not ... it's realistic and not something you see very often on American TV.

Definitely like Luke more than Vince! It doesn't help that I recently saw the Vince/Jess acting combination in a film (I think it was the Stallone film?) and I didn't like either.

Loving Billy and Mindy though :D

I agree her acting was painful! And the character very annoying

For online movie series, I'm watching Cinderella and Four Knights on Dramafever. I am at the halfway mark and it has been a cute show about the relationships of four mega wealthy young men and the girl who is assigned to make them a family.

My favorite Prime show by far is Catastrophe, which is actually a British comedy. Hysterical. Would highly recommend.

Yes, I agree with this recommendation, though I was quite taken aback at what I thought was a significant shift of tone/focus in the relationship between Sharon and Rob from Season 1 to Season 2 (especially given that each season is only 6 episodes).

Good to see Rob/Sharon get a writing Emmy nomination for Season 1 (although I suspect Master of None/Veep will win).

It is.
I watched the whole series last year.
I am older then the demographic too but I quite liked it.
As always I wish there was a bit more dancing.
But there is quite a bit.

I think I am 40 years older than the demographic, but who cares. I loved Dance Academy and can't wait for the movie even though it probably won't make its way to Netflix for another 2 years!

Um. no. The worst character was Julie. By far. God she was annoying.

I saw a short animated film "The World of Tomorrow" which was amazing. The animation is very simple, and the premise is a young girl meeting her clone from the future. Deep and sad and very very good. I see that it was nominated for an Academy Award. It's only 15 minutes long and well worth the time.

Yup. Julie was my least favorite character, too. I didn't hate her or anything, but she just wasn't that interesting.

Omg! My favourite female character! :D We clearly have very different tastes.

I could identify/sympathize with Julie the most because that's very similar to how I was as a teenager. I thought it was very well shown how a seemingly sensible good student with a nice family, could actually do more idiotic (and yes, annoying) things than someone who was from a less fortunate background like Tyra. I thought Julie was the most in depth character on the show.

I've been home by myself the last couple of days, avoiding housework. Watched all of Catastrophe and Jessica Jones. Time well spent.

I've watched the first two episodes of River, also. Not sure how I feel about it, it's a little slow and depressing...but then so am I. It may be a good fit after all. ;)

Netflix - BBC's Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is very good. The characters develop well, the story is interesting and the costumes are great. It is a 7 part series.

Noooooo! Shomi is shutting down at the end of November: http://www.thetvaddict.com/2016/09/...nly-shomi-streaming-service-is-shutting-down/

There are some shows on there that Netflix has never had, so I might have some binge-watching ahead. I also wonder if some shows will expire sooner.

Yeah, I just heard that too.

I never did get around to signing up with them -- largely because Telus doesn't have them as a "channel" like they do for Netflix & Crave. But they have a couple of shows that I really wanted to see so I'd better figure out the darned Chromecast and sign up pronto.

In Canada, Shomi had Transparent, Catastrophe, Mozart In The Jungle, I Difficult People, You're The Worst, among others. It'll be interesting to see who picks up the Amazon and Hulu series which were exclusive to Shomi.

Anyone watching "Last Chance U"? It's a docu series about a strong football program at Mississippi Community College. It's actually like a real life version of "Friday Night Lights"!

I just hope someone does as some of those I've really loved (and will quickly check out the others). :(

Shomi was also adding Jane the Virgin and iZombie episodes the day after they aired in the States.

Watched a few more episodes of "Last Chance U" - really good show! Even though it's a docu series, it's really dramatic and the characters are all very likable!

I'm glad there's going to be a Season 2!

I'm glad Shomi didn't shut down before I had a chance to binge-watch my way through season 3 of Transparent. Kind of sad and beautiful at the same time.

We just finished watching the first mini-season of The Get-Down. I know the show has gotten mixed reviews, but we enjoyed it. It was fun, first & foremost. And I liked that it covered such a specific and different time period (late 70s NYC). Loved all the music and the general tone of the show. Baz Luhrmann helped create it, and if you like his movies (which I do), you'll probably like the show too. The colorfulness and over-the-topness of the series is just like that of Moulin Rouge or Romeo + Juliet. The young actors in it are super-appealing, and some of the older actors very good as well. i would definitely recommend it, although it's kind of different.

We also finished watching The Honourable Woman, and I have to say we didn't enjoy that one as much. It's all very well done, but it just felt like less than the sum of its parts. The ending was realistic, yet depressing, and we were kind of left feeling like--okay, where did that really go? Also I just didn't warm to any of the characters. I felt like we weren't really supposed to like any of them.

That's exactly how I felt. I admired, but didn't particularly enjoy, the entire series.

Watched first couple episodes of Luke Cage. I enjoyed it, though I would so far rank it behind Jessica Jones and the first season of Daredevil. The cast is great (Alfre Woodward!) and it continues the grittiness of the other NetFlix series.

As an aside, too bad this didn't come out in the spring cause there's some great R&B that the skaters could have used.

I'm also enjoying Luke Cage. It's definitely below Jessica Jones for me, but I like it more than both seasons of Daredevil. I liked Daredevil quite a bit, though, so I'm not trying to put it down. Good point about the R&B! I've been wondering if the acts are known, but I keep forgetting to keep watching during the credits (that "start next episode" option is too appealing).

There's a documentary on Netflix called The Fabulous Ice Age that chronicles the history of American ice tours, featuring many former stars of ice shows, including Dick Button and Tom Collins. Has anyone seen it yet?
I watched it this weekend. What a glorious time to be a skater! Those gorgeous young people, traveling the world - so exciting. I had never heard about the explosion before. Heartbreaking. I ended up googling more about it and watching interviews and reading articles.

I just finished watching the Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell series and my daughter came home and then she watched the first episode, so now I am watching it a second time with her. Sooooo good.

She had me watch Zootopia. Pleasantly surprised by it. Animation is solid, storyline is positive. No giant 'shoot em up finale' like almost all the other kids animation movies.

I just watched Amanda Knox documentary on Netflix.

Guilty, guilty, guilty.

I had the completely opposite reaction. I thought she had something to do with it beforehand, and came away thinking she was not guilty. The police work seemed terrible; the evidence was just not there; the prosecutor was slut-shaming and the media was completely shameless. That said, some of her behavior was totally bizarre.

I think Rudy Guede did it.

@oleada keep in mind she had a say in what made it into the movie. This is a very shortened version and tenderly avoids evidence against her.
Its funny that her own book convinced me she was involved.
