I was trying to look for Early Summer by Ozu and it's only available online through a new service that costs like $99 per year to join. I can afford it but I hate the idea of paying for yet another online streaming service. For all the streaming services I want, it's costing as much as cable.

Did you see this? I think it's all there but not quite sure... it seems to go on app 2hrs and then there's something Swedish/American after it. No time markers. Weird.

I'm enjoying the new season of One Day at a Time on Netflix. It is more relevant than ever, providing its trademark laugh-out-loud humor, gentle exploration of complex issues, and trenchant social critiques. Starts with a helpful two-minute summary of the last season.
 
Just watched 'Big Little Lies' from our cable provider's 'On Demand'.

I'm still processing it. At first, I was very bothered by the show because the characters are beautiful, slim rich women living in multi-million dollar ocean-front view properties on the California coast - hardly representative of women at large. Well, we do have one 'poor' renter, but she can still afford to rent a house with a view - somehow.

It looked to be a spin on the 'Desperate Housewives' series. TBH I've never watched any of those series, but how 'Big Little Lies' started out is how I envision the women in those multiple series to be.

However, after watching all seven episodes, I'd say the series was worth it. It explores issues very important to women's reality in the world at large.

And Nicole Kidman is always amazing! If she's in a series or movie, you can count on it being worth watching.

Is anyone else watching Fauda (Arabic for chaos) on Netflix? It's an Israeli/Palestinian series that examines both sides of this conflict. Mossad discovers that an Hamas terrorist they thought they had killed is still alive. There are action packed scenes where they track the terrorist, but you also see the effect of these events on both sides.

I'm watching Altered Carbon and it is interesting, although I could do without so much nudity.

That was my husband’s comment too.

End of the f****** world is brilliant if you like quirky and dark with a bit of tragedy mixed in. I was also pretty stoked to see another season of Rita.
 
They recently got bobs burgers on Canadian Netflix and I am so pleased with that. Other Netflix shows that I enjoy and rec are:
one day at a time (a heartwarming comedy show)
Jane the Virgin
Stranger things (If you're into nostalgic ,sci fy, mystery shows)
Brooklyn 99 (Hilarious and silly. Diverse amazing cast.)
 
Finally finished watching season two of the Crown. The final few episodes were really good, and the scene between the Queen and her Uncle David were so fascinating to watch.
 
Why didn't anyone tell me there was a Queer Eye reboot? :drama:

I was initially worried that I wouldn't like the guys as much as the original but they picked a really great cast. I'm only on episode 3 but love it already.
 
F is for family is hilarious but proceed with caution it's a certain type of humor that some might not like or might get offended by (lots of swearing)
 
Just finished Jessica Jones season 2 and I liked I but didn't love it. The whole season felt very dark, twisty and dingy for the sake of being dark, twisty, and dingy. The whole season was just about Jessica and her issues and I just kept waiting for the superhero/sleuth stuff to truly start but it never really does. Instead it seemed at times I was watching a season of Big Brother. 5 out of 10
 
Thanks for the Jessica Jones review @Buzz. I was wondering if the show was going to get any lighter in the second season--I guess the answer is no. ;)

We just finished season 2 of Victoria on PBS. I must say, I really enjoy this show. It's probably not for everyone, but I love it. Some of the plot twists this season were a bit melodramatic (and definitely ahistorical), but who cares. I really like the 2 main characters and their relationship. Interestingly, I was just reading yesterday that they're dating in real life.... ;)
 
I started watching The Man in the High Castle (on Prime) with two of my friends this past weekend and WOW, that show is full of some seriously dark but really great storytelling. Its SO fascinating to see how things could have turned out back then which also makes it scary at times too (I'm a sucker for anything related to WW2 so this show is right up my alley). We only got up to episode 5 of S1 but I can't wait to watch the rest of the series. Thank goodness my one friend told me that S3 is all ready filmed but not released yet so I have that to look forward to once I get done binge watching S1 and 2! :D I don't have Prime at home yet (I was at visiting my friends out of town over the weekend) but I just got a bonus at work today and you bet I'm going to buy it so I can watch the rest of this show (along with some other shows that I haven't gotten to see yet). So glad we started that series and I cannot wait to get back to it! :biggrinbo

Binge-watched season 1 and working my way through season 2 now! My hubby is hooked too which is saying a lot. :lol: IMO season 2 isn’t quite as good as the first (the prime minister character gets progressively more boring after the departure of Churchill/John Lithgow). But it’s still entertaining.

Kinda bummed that the cast will be turning over next season but I hear Helena Bonham Carter will be playing Princess Margaret! :cheer2:

2nd half of the 2nd season gets much better.
 
I found a new show on Netflix last night. Had seen a review of it and had to watch it.

Called Nailed It! it is a cooking show for bad bakers. Basically the person with the least worst bake wins and does get $10K. The host is a big black woman named Nicole who is just right into it. And they had two world class judges, some guy with a french like accent and woman with big black framed glasses who makes stunning cakes and ended up stealing a saucepan that she liked from the back room. The first episode they had to make cake pops and then replicate an award winning cake. The person who comes last in the first round gets an opportunity to call on Nicole to annoy the other contestants in the second round for three minutes.

Everyone is having a hoot of a time and no one takes it seriously. Great fun.
 
Season 2 of OCCUPIED is on Netflix. I had watched season 1 early last year and found it to be riveting. Highly recommend checking it out. I have only viewed part of the first episode of season 2 and already know I will be binging this weekend.
 
We recently watched the first 2 seasons of The Durrells in Corfu through PBS online streaming. I thought it was good, but not great. The kids were funny, the scenery was lovely, and some of the situations quite amusing in that droll English style of humor. But I was a bit bored at points, and there was something missing. I think I found the main character's romances disappointing--she didn't really have chemistry with either of her love interests (but did with Spiro). Nonetheless, I'm sure we'll watch the third season when it becomes available in the States.

We're now watching Altered Carbon. Pretty good so far. However, I don't think I would find it nearly as interesting if Joel Kinnaman wasn't in it. :D
 
@Jenny I finally started Cardinal on Hulu. I’ve only seen the first two episodes but I really enjoyed them. I love the atmosphere and location.

I've been checking for season 2 for months and have already watched the whole thing! It continues to be quite good though not up to the level of season 1. Without spoilers, I'll just say that I was getting bored with the whole ex-PM plot, and then...!

Also, the Russian ambassador's role shrank, which is disappointing as she was riveting in season 1.
 
One of my childhood memories was watching Romance of the Three Kingdoms (the old 1994 CCTV version) with my parents. I recently rewatched most of it on Youtube and also watched most of the 2010 remake. When I was young, I didn't understand a lot of the dialogue (because a lot of the 1994 version is directly quoted from the book, which is in literary Chinese, and my Chinese isn't that good), but this time I watched it with English subtitles.

I highly recommend this series if you like historical dramas. The 2010 version is easier for those who are unfamiliar with the story.

It's based on a 14th century Chinese historical fiction novel that is considered one of the "4 masterpieces" of Chinese literature. Set in 168-280 AD among the turbulence immediately after the fall of the Han dynasty, 3 rulers fight against each other to unite China. It's filled with political maneuvering, epic personalities, famous battles, strategy, and court intrigue galore! Very much like Game of Thrones--but set in ancient China and based on real-life events. And it's such an important part of the Chinese heritage. Everyone who grows up in China knows the famous characters--the infamous Cao Cao, the "ideal" ruler Liu Bei, the mastermind Zhuge Liang, and can tell some of the stories.

On Netflix I watched The Great Interior Design Challenge. It was fun and I liked the history of the villages they went to and snooping in people's houses. I thought the housing regulations were interesting too - the old window tax, houses you can't drill into or even wallpaper.

REAL farmhouse kitchens....and castles!

Netflix - I watched North & South (from BBC in 2004), which IMO was not nearly as interesting as North and South (i.e., the Civil War miniseries).

Now I'm making my way through A.D. Kingdom and Empire. So far, very good.
