I know Nathan is disappointed about the sp today but that program is alive and well and coming for Worlds. He was a little wild today, but really amped up the performance aspect. I love the way he moves and it’s unique to him. A few years back, I would have never thought to be so charmed by his artistry.

^^ Nathan has always been an artist. Check out his 2015 Jr Worlds fp and then talk about not believing he's an artist.

I think the judges don't give Nathan enough credit for his choreo and interpretation. Plus, they overscored Samarin on PCS. While Samarin landed two quads, he had a three turn in between his first combo jumping pass which for some athletes receives minus GOE. On another landing, Samarin landed awkwardly and still received positive GOE. Samarin's program is nothing to write home about, and his PE was too high as well. I'm not sure what all the judges' love is about for Samarin. Too bad the exceptionally gifted Kolyada apparently doesn't possess the less gifted Samarin's steely competitive resolve.

Nathan was not on during his recent performance, yet he landed a good quad in the warm-up and apparently left it there. Still this sp is so creative and it's simply not being rewarded. Nathan's choreo and interpretation should be in the 9s. IMO, Shoma and Hanyu are coddled when they make mistakes. But the judges are overly eager to mark Nathan down and hold back GOE which they shower upon Shoma and Hanyu. While Nathan posesses a very different movement quality and he doesn't have the soft knees of Shoma, Nathan is much more musically gifted and has more creative range and depth than both Shoma and Hanyu.

See I told you all why he was such in a good mood. He had indeed finished his homeworks https://twitter.com/cantileverlove/status/1066398871029510144
Seriously, this is impressive as dedication goes.
Nathan reportedly told NBC (source was Olympic Channel's recap article yesterday): “My final exams are in two weeks. My Spanish final is next Tuesday, and I have a paper due next week. I brought my textbooks here. It’s a lot of new experiences.”

Congrats to Nathan, balancing Yale and his first two Grand Prix competitions and qualifying for the GP Final again! :respec:
He will miss the last week of classes during GPF week before the Reading Period begins (final exams are scheduled from December 13 to 19 - maybe he meant to say his finals besides for Spanish are in 3 weeks?).

Congratulations to Nathan for coming back strong in the FS for his second Grand Prix win of the season and qualifying for the GPF! It is obviously a balancing act for him but I think he has done a great job so far. He has two fantastic programs and I can’t wait to see them grow through the rest of the season.

I could only manage my classes when I was in school — I am stunned and so proud of him for balancing both as well as he can!

Just saw results! Something going on with the ice? First Nathan's 3rd after the SP & Evgenia not so lucky later!

Well, OT but in a post competition interview, Evgenia said it was due to mental errors IIRC. Back OT, as for Nathan, it seems he's gradually adding back difficulty one meet at a time and perhaps some of his quads aren't quite ready yet. On the positive side, he's landed his 'weak' jump, the triple Axel, clean 5 times in a row, and he still won both of his GPs and made it to the Final! :D

Announced today (Dec. 5, 2018): https://www.teamusa.org/News/2018/D...r-Honors-For-Team-USA-Awards-Presented-By-Dow
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Standout performances during November earned figure skater Nathan Chen (Salt Lake City, Utah), weightlifter Mattie Rogers (Orlando, Florida) and the U.S. Women’s Four Nations Cup Ice Hockey Team Best of November honors for the Team USA Awards presented by Dow, the United States Olympic Committee announced today.
Nathan Chen won his second Grand Prix Series title of the season with 271.58 points at the Internationaux de France. Sitting in third after the short program, he landed three quad jumps in his free skate to top the field by over 15 points. The victory secured Chen a qualifying spot for the Grand Prix Final for the third time in his career. It was also his fifth straight Grand Prix event win, making him the first man to win five straight Grand Prix starts in more than a decade.
Jackie Wong interviewed Nathan at Skate America for the latest "Ice Talk" podcast (starting after the 28-minute mark): https://icetalk.libsyn.com/website/2018-grand-prix-final-preview-with-tanith-white-and-nathan-chen

Nick McCarvel's article on his Grand Prix Final win: https://www.teamusa.org/News/2018/D...x-Final-Champion-Keeping-Perfect-Season-Alive
"I'm glad I was able to pull it together in the second half of the program," Chen, 19, said in reference to a fall on an attempted quadruple Lutz. "I'm not quite where I want to be. (But) this was the first free skate I did this season with more than three quads. I wanted to improve off of what I did last competition... and I did that."
...
He will now set his sights on a third straight national title, the U.S. championships set for late January in Detroit.
"I just want to keep improving," Chen told reporters. "I missed that Lutz (in the free skate), so that's what I'm thinking about right now. I like to focus on the present and try not to dwell on the past. It's on to the next."
Here's an interview of Nathan by Meryl Davis. He talks about going back to CA over his break to train with Raf and how he looks forward to seeing his training mates (like Mariah, Romain) again. I doubt he'd go to 4CC because it's in the middle of his semester.

^^ It's a John Wilson Blades interview (that I came here to post too). It was conducted after the France GP event. :)

^^ Yes, thanks, I really misheard the timing and location of that interview. I was distracted, trying to do several things at once. ;)

I understand what Nathan means, but saying he's not good at quads is overly modest. It's just that he's still maturing and evolving, and quads are very difficult to obtain, and then continue to maintain and perfect.

He didn't actually say he's not good at quads. He said he's not perfect at them and there's still a lot of work to do to make them better. I'm sure that's exactly what Raf would have wanted to hear from him. Now someone like me would say, whoo hoo, I can do all these quads, so what if I make a mistake here and there? But unlike me, Nathan is a champion. :)

I figured he'd have a lot more time to focus on skating due to the holiday break from school. I wonder what this means for Nationals? I think it bodes well.

ETA - I hope that carries thru to Worlds. I realize he will be back in school, though

^^ Nathan is a popular interview subject. :) That's a very relaxed, fairly wide-ranging interview with wonderful questions posed by Meryl! Nathan explains in a bit more detail how he manages his day-to-day routine. And although he hasn't made concrete plans, he did hint that he thinks having two years of full-time training for the Olympics is preferable. One complication is that Yale apparently allows full-time students only two semesters off as matriculating students. Nathan seems like he's setting that issue aside for now and will make choices when it's necessary.
