Michelle Kwan (Threads Merged)

It's always wonderful to see Michelle so active and busy, and enjoying her work and her life. I often wonder if she has set a timeline for herself for fitting in having children. Of course she's only been married for just over two years, so she still has time. Kween will be 35 on July 7. Just wow, the passage of time! If she and Clay are going to have children, maybe in another two years?

Our MK was recently named to join yet another board, State of Rhode Island Arts Council:

^^ Thanks for posting the link. I suppose it's meant to be edgy, in your face, and OTT exaggeration to expose unconscious cultural biases in order to make us all laugh at ourselves, but sometimes taking that risk pushes across a fine line into territory that some may find offensive. Amy has a funny delivery, but not what I'd call a best routine either, especially starting out with the image of cannibalizing a baby, FGS!

Yep, and without Amy's gotcha humor as a reminder, we already knew MK is very much a part of American culture and in the vocabulary. MK is a former figure skater, but she transcends skating and she did so even during her competitive years. :) I too wonder if MK has any real beef about Oliver Stone.

I don't see the below MK tweet mentioned here:

"Michelle Kwan ‏@MichelleWKwan May 26

Honored to present my former coach & friend, Frank Carroll, the ISI's Lifetime Achievement Award. Congrats!!!"

Ice Skating Institute's website lists past award winners:

A quick google search reveals that its apparently well-known Oliver Stone has an unsettling thing for Asian women. Wouldn't be surprised if he made a pass at Michelle and she's been doing her feminist duties and exposing his proclivities for years.

Got an excited phone call from my friend of longest duration(don't like to say oldest friend :) ). Her daughter was up at Harvard over the weekend attending her 10th college reunion and had texted her, "Michelle Kwan was spending time with our group because her husband(Clay Pell) is one of my classmates!" Nothing like fewer than six degrees of separation!:p

Well, skaters nowadays can -- and do -- get 6.00's, but it's not the same thing as the Kween's 6.0's. :COP:
True, but today you don't know they received a perfect score unless someone announces it or you look at the official scores later. They are hidden in the total scores, not shown like they were during the 6.0 era.

Okay---I felt like I was one of the few who liked this particular program and her dress is one of my favorites on any skater from that day to this. I wish she would have stayed with it but I know it wasn't as warmly received as other programs.

Thanks for posting this link. I had forgotten about this program. Very cool. Awesome dress too. Michelle Kwan = Ms. Kool.

Cool.

It would be interesting to see them speaking together; here's to hoping that we'll get the chance.

I guess this crushes the fantasies of those who made the Kween out to be a hardcore Republican.

Don't worry, they can hold on to the idea that she's some shameless opportunist. You know the type that's popular on TV.

Me too. I watched it again & that got me to watching 5 or 6 programs culminating with Tosca at the 2004 US championship. My heart starting beating faster as the program went on just as it did when I saw it for the 1st time. I was there & when Michelle did her ending FW section she was coming right toward me. We were all screaming our heads off. It was one of the most exciting moments in skating for me.

I came across this video interview with Michelle Kwan discussing her diplomacy role with the U.S. state department. I hadn't seen it posted anywhere here previously:

How she has matured! Kween! :)

"In my role as a sports diplomacy envoy (a citizen volunteer), it was always easy to deflect [difficult political] questions..."

Great interview, with some interesting insights. Michelle says from the age of 13, when she discovered that kids only six years younger than her looked up to her as a role model, she felt the responsibility of working hard to be the best she could be.

 when the interviewer goes off-topic to ask about Michelle's expensive Vera Wang wedding dress. She must have given him a look, and he immediately got back on topic.

My thanks too, @Cachoo. I knew there were a few MK programs that I missed seeing, and this was one of them. What a treat to discover it now! I'd be the first to purchase the definitive Michelle Kwan DVD set with everything she has performed. :swoon:
