Yes, as I noted, no Australian skaters in any recent Olympics fit the bill.

There was one skater in Sochi who was a civil engineering student - Anne Line Gjersem of Norway.

This has nothing to do with Max Aaron, who is not a civil engineer. What did he get his degree in?

Someone posted here, Finance. He finished Magna Cum Laude. He must be very intelligent.

Because of his skating career, he hadn't ever taken the SAT or ACT, so he had to start at community college. He worked as a a waiter on the weekends to help pay the tuition. To accommodate his three hours a day at the rink, plus warmup time, strength conditioning, physical therapy and dance, he typically took his finance classes from 8 to 10:40 a.m. and 7:30 to 10:05 p.m.

Whatever anyone else says:

Max showed why we love him in the FS. The three quad passes were a disaster, yes, but everything else was gorgeous, and he stayed with the program. Even as the light of his Olympic dream was flickering and dying out, he kept fighting all the way through to the end. And I will always be proud of him for that.

And now we have a bonus special. I'm hoping for the skates of his life there. To see him smile again.
 
Max has finally broken his silence, and of course, it's every bit as classy and tearjerking as you'd expect.

My wife and I have been following Max Aaron ever since he skated to "Footloose," even though it was not our favorite program that he's ever done it was a fun change of pace. I don't follow a lot of U.S. skaters but I like Max Aaron. It's too bad he didn't get to compete at the Olympics but I will be watching his great short program to "Les Miserables" (the same musical Galustyan used for her short this season!) from the Grand Prix event when I want to see a great men's program that's newer than Elvis Stojko. My wife and I both love Elvis!

What a great quote from Max that is in post number 37! He is a class act, as I like to say. I'm glad he has supporters and defenders on the web.

It was a little shaky on the first quad toe combination. But I really just come here to perform, to give a great performance that everybody enjoyed. I feel like I gave a good performance. Not technically perfect but an enjoyable performance. And I’m looking forward to Saturday again [enjoying] that performance, and making the crowd enjoy, and just show what I love to do. Coming here is more like that I can perform and enjoy, and so I was able to do that, and I’m really happy about that, and to end the season this way, on this note.

I'm not an Aaron fan *at all* but he skated completely out of his skin in the LP at 4CC and I was genuinely impressed. In particular his expression and upper body movement was beyond anything I had seen from him before.

I'm so proud of him. He could have shown up at 4CC still dwelling on Nationals and letting it affect his performance, or worse, withdrawn before the event, but he didn't just show up and skate, he showed up and blitzed it. And he looked so happy and relaxed.

That's why I hope for just one more year. One more year with no Olympic pressure and no studies and just for him, just for Max. Because 4CC showed he still has so much left he can give us.
 
IMO he was underscored artistically. I know people like Brown and Uno are more artistic, but not by the margin the scores had, especialy with really flawed skates, especialy by Uno. It is a shame Max's work on improvements in artistry, spins, and jump quality are not more rewarded by the judges.

Still awesome to see him skate so great in possibly his last amateur event. A true class act.
 
I could see him going another season perhaps. I would be stunned if he went for 2022 but another season or two I could see. I wouldnt be surprised if a lot of the NA skaters try for worlds in 2020 to end their career. That is an exciting place (Montreal) for any Canadian or American to skate I believe.

I think he's about 11th on the SB list and he's pretty high up the ranking chart too, so two assignments shouldn't be an issue if he chooses to continue. Not sure USFS would choose him for SkAm, though.

I've decided I like this song and Max should :D skate to it if he wants.

EDIT: Just checked. He's SB11 and WS11. There's no way he's not getting two if he continues.

Especialy as Skate America will always be special for him as that is where he had probably his biggest win ever, even over his U.S National title; beating Uno amongst others to become the first American man in a long time to win Skate America. I believe even Lysacek couldn't manage a win there.
