I couldn't find a thread for Max Aaron so here is one.

Today I saw his 1/4 page picture on the front page of the sports section of our local newspaper, and a half page article about him, as he is from this area (Scottsdale). On the same page A smaller picture & article was devoted to our football hero Carson Palmer, the Arizona Cardinals QB, who announced his retirement on Tuesday. I was happy that FS got more space than football, at least one day, in our newspaper (though I am a huge football fan too).

Unfortunately I can't find the link because I can't find the electronic article. It should be on www.azcentral.com but somehow I am unable to access it, even though I am a subscriber.

So here is a wish- Max makes the Olympic team this time. Go Max!

Thanks for starting this thread. :)

Here's the AZ article, titled "Max Aaron of Scottsdale takes second crack at making Olympics in figure skating": https://www.azcentral.com/story/spo...ack-making-olympics-figure-skating/994413001/

I am concerned about his draw. He is skating in the first group in the SP, while Nathan, Jason, Adam are all skating much later. Max has planned two quads in his SP. I hope he lands both.

I don't think it really matters for the SP. Polina skated first and was fairly scored last night. If Max skates well he will do well.

Hey Vash, guess when else he skated in the first group? It was 2013... :)

Did he win?

Yes, 2013 was the year he won his title. :)

He had good company in that first group, as I recall. He went first, then Joshua, then I think it was Ricky, then Jason. But that skate also took place the year after a disastrous low finish at Nationals, so Max had decided on one more Nationals for himself...there are a lot of parallels between 2013 and this year that I am hoping are good omens.

Aww man... I am sad for Max. He looked good out there but it wasn't his night. Will he continue competing or pursue his finance career? He looked miserable in the KnC.

He may be nearly 30 points out of first, but about 20 points from third.
Maybe if he puts in a few more quads and has a good PCS score, he might have a chance.

He's not said anything official, but as the season's gone on he's dropped more and more hints that this is it, and that is what is killing me the most right now.

This is probably it for Max. He will always be a US champ. He has given everything but something seems to prevent him from delivering his best when it counts. Whatever he decides I wish him the best, and I do wish him a clean free skate or at least one he can truly be proud of.

Well, I hope that he does what makes him happiest - but I do hope that includes going to 4CC this year, and going to both Worlds and 4CC next year. Especially 4CC. I have already had the privilege of seeing him live once, but to get to see him a second time would be even better.

Is he the only competitor with a master's degree? Great job finishing his education while training hard.
He didn't get his master's yet. Just his Bachelor's. Magna cum laude, of course. ;) Your point may still be the same though, at least among the top men.
Based on this 2017 IN article, Alex Johnson should be close to graduating from the University of Minnesota, and there are a number of other competitors who are in school. Curran Oi was in a PhD program when he competed in 2016, but just making it to Nationals was an achievement for him.

The most educated active skated is Dr. Valtter Virtanen of Finland ;)

Interesting info.

An ice dancer (lady) from Australia had a PhD in Civil Engineering when she competed in one of the Olympics - can't remember if it was 2010 or 2014. Unfortunately I can't remember her name nor her partner's name. May be someone can help me out here.

Debi Thomas had nearly finished premed at Stanford when she competed in the 1988 Olympics.

I'm not aware of any Australian ice dancer who has a PhD, but perhaps misskarne will know of someone.

Danielle O'Brien represented Australia in ice dance in 2014 with Gregory Merriman; given that she was only 24 at the time and an active athlete, I find it unlikely that she also had a PhD in anything. The only Australian figure skater in 2010 was 16-year old Cheltzie Lee. Joanne Carter, who represented Australia in the ladies' event in 2006, is currently in medical school.

Apologies for the tangent :) If he doesn't get any assignments for the rest of the season, Max Aaron should take a holiday and go to Israel like Jason Brown did a couple of years ago. I think he'd enjoy it.

I think regardless of where he finishes, Max will benefit from his figure skating experience. He can be proud that he was a successful athlete at such a high level.

I think he will skate much better in the LP. He is not the type who gives up.

Oh, and do hope he takes time off to do the things he loves to do after this season is over.

My hope is that Max can just relax and just skate without pressure on Saturday and really let himself fly. That would be the best present he could give himself, his parents, and the fans who have appreciated him for many years.

Olympian or not, he's still a former National title holder, and 4 time senior men's medalist, an amazing accomplishment in its own right. I think it's doubtful he will pull a Voronov and keep going, but his heart will tell him what to do.

Matt Savoie had a masters degree when he competed at the Olympics. Was it 2006? A lot of skaters have gone on to pursue advanced degrees post skating, but it is rare that one even even completes an undergraduate degree while still competing.

I remember Paul Wylie mentioning how much more difficult it would be for Michelle Kwan to get a degree while competing (she didn't do it then, but in 2000 or so, she was trying) than it was for him because of changes in the sport (added events such as GP series; tech changes, etc). It is probably still more difficult now than in Michelle's day.

Max has shown great basics -- brains, grit, and class. Regardless of his skating this year, IMO, he will do just fine.

It's not rare for skaters to complete undergraduate degrees while competing. Not everyone does it and it usually takes them longer than people who are full-time students, but it's not that unusual. Nonetheless, it's admirable that Max Aaron decided to study and did such a great job that he was able to graduate magna cum laude.

ETA: examples of successful student skaters include Takahiko Kozuka and Alban Preaubert, both of whom completed graduate degrees while competing; Alexander Majorov, a physical therapist; and Denis Ten, who was studying for an MBA and may have graduated by now.

Paul Wylie completed his bachelors degree at Harvard before the 1992 Olympics, so he was able to focus on his skating much better (and we saw the results in Albertville).

I did a google search and all I could find was that in 2014 there was just one ice dance team from Australia (O'Brien & Merriman) and there is no mention of education level. So I assume the announcer/commentator was wrong in saying she had a PhD in Civil Engineering.

In 2010- no ice dance team.

I should check 2006 and 2002 now.

ETA: None in 2006 & 2002
