Little Richard has passed away

Little Richard: Don't know if people took him seriously but how far ahead of his time was he with the lyrics to Tutti Frutti? And just what is that first line: A whop bop a looma (luna?)

Little Richard was underrated, as celebrated as he was. He was a pioneer in every sense of the word and so much of rock n roll and subsequent genres were modeled after him. He faced a lot of race issues in the white studio dominated space, let’s put it that way.

@Cachoo, I heard a lot of queer theories and even a small shout out to his Jewish friend named Bob in the lyrics of Tutti Fruitti (the latter from my history of New Orleans music professor), but I never double checked those sources.

I found this John Waters retrospective interview from the late 1980s with Little Richard and man it was a doozy to read, but it’s a bit nsfw. If you ever wanted to know factoids like he had a threesome with Buddy Holly with his favorite stripper, it’s your kind of interview:

He has amazing things to say about Bob Dylan and Bobby Darin.

This was one funny read....and also a little sad. Little Richard triumphed over some difficult circumstances.

RIP great one.

He once pointed out the irony of the fact that Elvis Presley sold more copies of his cover version of Tutti Frutti than he did of his original, despite the fact that Richard wrote it! However, the Little Richard version is, and always will be, the definitive version! As the old saying goes, accept no imitations, even when they are from Elvis!

Richard may not have invented rock‘n’roll (Elvis, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, and others we’re already established by the time Richard had his first hit), but he was certainly an architect of it

Richard appeared in the classic 1956 musical, The Girl Can’t Help It, performing 3 songs: Ready Teddy, She’s Got It, and the title track. That film had a huge influence on the music that would follow, inspiring many of the artists of the 1960’s including The Beatles.
