Italian figure skating news & updates

The judges are onto Grassl’s URs and have him under a microscope. He finished 8th in Tallinn without the Japanese and U.S. guys, chances of a Top Ten finish are shaky. I’d send Rizzo and Memola whom the judges reward if they skate just decently.

Except that if we subtract the step sequence from all of the scores except Nationals, that gives Memola a 34.06 advantage.

So, just a quick update - Memola is entered in this week's Road to 26 Trophy and Rizzo is entered at Bellu Memorial. Theoretically, Rizzo could close the gap to within 30 points with Memola with a good competition in Bucharest, or Memola could extend his lead over Rizzo with an even better skate in Milano than he had in Tallinn. Should be an interesting week! 👀

LMAO - this is NUTS! But, okay, so, if we subtract the step sequence from all the comps but Nats, here's what we get for the calculation...

Lara comes out ahead by 1.98 points. Any way we slice it - the selection committee can assign whomever they want because they're within 20 points of each other.
Alrighty, alrighty! Lara competed in Road to 26 Trophy this week and she can count this as her post-Nats score at 100% since she doesn't have any Senior Bs or Italian Elite Series comp scores counted in her total yet. She's managed to extend her lead over Pezzetta by about 7 points. The Italian fed can still do whatever they want - and Anna has Jr Worlds coming up next week, so there's a chance for her to improve her post-Nats score from Euros with a stronger performance in Hungary.

Don't look now but if nothing changes until Worlds, Grassl & Egadze now will skate back-to-back In the short thanks to Aymoz's win this weekend.
Long bathroom break! Seriously, I don’t mind Egadze, with a different coach and choreo he would be fine.

I actually spoke too soon because Cha and Grassl are exactly tied in world standings points, so there will be a draw to see who goes first between the two. So you might have Cha wedged between. The only way he's moving up the standings is if he finishes top 2 at 4CC tonight.

Cha did gain an incremental 76 points for silver at 4C’s, now reflected on the ISU website, so the tie is broken.

According to Rule 520 of the Special Regs, for Championshps, each SP/RD group based on WS is split in two — if an odd number, the extra is added to the “later” half — and they draw in WS order for placement within that half.

So if Britschgi skates, and it’s Memola and Grassl, the later half of the penultimate group is Aymoz drawing first, Memola drawing second, and Egadze getting what’s left. Then for the earlier half, Cha draws first, Grassl second, and Vasiljevs gets what’s left.

If Britschgi doesn’t skate, Aymoz moves to the last group, and Memola draws first, Egadze draws second, and Cha gets whatever’s left for the later group. For the earlier group Grassl draws first, Vasiljevs second, and next in line (depending on who’s assigned) gets what’s left.

It’s different if the Italian Fed has discretion among the Men and can choose Rizzo over Memola, both of whom would be somewhere in the penultimate group, but I think there were still questions about whether to remove a step sequence in the calculation, which might have allowed the Italian Fed to do what it wants.

The difference between being in the later and the earlier could be the difference between starting first or last, but whether that’s good or bad can depend on the skater.

So, Memola increased his lead over Rizzo in the end; and Rizzo was unable to close the gap at Bellu Memorial. Seems pretty clear the Italian Worlds team will be Grassl & Memola.

Rizzo is for sure going to the Sonja Henie Trophy based on the 'next Oslo' at the end of his latest IG post with the podium from this weekend.

Not that I think Italy is going to change the assignments in the two weeks before Worlds, but he's sure competing all he can.

@AngieNikodinovLove (ANL) Anna knew at Euros she was going to Jr worlds. She seemed okay with it & frankly it makes sense given the circumstances

I am in bed and I just watched Anna short program. Oh my God, the most exciting skater in ladies figure skating and I think probably one of the best technical jumpers the sport has ever seen and she still competing in juniors.

All of her jumps need to be turned into quads because they’re too much power for triples. Lol Sandra B once said of Midori no ice surface is big enough for her and we can all see the same thing about Anna.
