Sad that Olympic Channel couldn't stay on the air for an interview. We got 5 seconds of Morgan smiling, that's it, then they cut to a re-air of Rio.

I'm not sure about that. Had she not choked during the AA on bars, and obtained the same score on it as in qualification (15.100 instead of 14.200), she would now be AA world champion. It was her significantly underperforming on bars that cost her the title
 
So Paseka pulls out vault gold once again. Definitely something needs to change on vault judging to encourage execution because that was one of the most lackluster vault finals I feel like I have seen. Carey could have won with a slightly better landing on her Amanar, but I was really missing Rebecca Andrade and Ellie Downie for their good execution. There are many things I appreciate about Ellie Black, but that she was anywhere near the podium says how weak this final was.

Trying to be more positive, good for Steingruber to pull off a medal when she was not looking anywhere near ready even a few weeks ago. Chuso also rapidly improved from a World Cup a couple weeks ago and I love how much the crowd appreciates her.

Great retention of his world pommel horse title by Max Whitlock. There was a LOT of pressure there and he came through brilliantly.

Every time she competes, I can tell myself that the Soviet gymnastics era isn't completely over yet... :D It came to mind today that the first and only time I saw her compete live previously was over 23 years ago, and yet, while staring at the "42" number besides her name, part of me was in disbelief. It must be even stranger for her contemporaries or near contemporaries, such as Omelianchik who was among the judges. Zmeskal to Smith: "You know, I used to compete against her!" :p
 
Really happy that Yul won a bronze on floor today - he has shown that he can be clean and consistent on an international stage. But I really hope that he increases his difficultly going forward. Happy for Jade winning bronze on vault as well.

Ashton during the bars finals. :( That was painful to watch. I really hope that she didn’t/doesn’t go pro and that she goes NCAA from here.

Ashton has already gone pro. Part of the reason is that she doesn't think her body would be able to handle the weekly competition grind of NCAA, in which case she might as well try and make a bit of money from going pro.

And I agree - that was very hard to watch even if I have never particularly been a fan of hers. I never like seeing anyone like that.

The weekly competing and traveling involved in NCAA is worth considering - plus there probably aren’t realistically a lot of full scholarships available (gymnastics is a losing $$$ program at most schools), even though I would think that being on a National or even World team would make Ashton competitive for one of them.
 
Is that something that can be undone? Going back to amateur status after having already been Pro?
 
Where was Laurie Hernandez? Don't tell me she's already done after only one year as a Senior she was a rising star in Rio and looked like a future World champion for sure especially after seeing who made the AA podium she could have won a bunch of medals here.

Too busy winning DWTS, releasing a book and doing multiple rounds of chat show and red carpet appearances.
 
Yeah, Marta tried to set Hernandez up as the Bridget Sloan/Kyla Ross of this Olympic cycle, but I don’t know if I would be so quick to say she would’ve dominated this year. The gymnasts from MG Elite seem to be injury prone so who’s to say she wouldn’t be out for the season like Riley McCusker is. I think the gymnasts from last quad that just missed out (Skinner/Nichols/Dowell) would have greatly benefited from competing elite this season. A great opportunity they just let slide by to be honest. Next season promising juniors like Perea, O’Keefe and Malabuyo become senior eligible (correct me if I’m wrong) so I think the expected dominance from the U.S will return somewhat but it won’t be the 5-10 point team competition gap they had in the past. I just think it says a lot about the field when the U.S. #6 from nationals still managed to win the AA world title. Given how things have gone down so far I think Russia and China will have a good advantage next season given that the higher scores seem to come from uneven bars now.

I can't speak to whether gymnastics is a losing $ program at most schools, but there are literally hundreds of full scholarships, as there are something like 60 Division I schools with women's gymnastics programs and they each have 12 full scholarships available, which makes 720 full scholarships. Ashton would easily be competitive for one of them if she were healthy and not pro.

Nope. There was a good video done a year or two ago about Jordyn Wieber and how this is rather unfair to gymnasts whose prime earning years are before they are college age but I don't see it changing because NCAA is hypocritical and sexist:

Agree, if you can put 2 of the highest SV vaults to your feet, you get a medal - it doesn't matter how sloppy in the air or how low you land. It just comes down the the size of the step in the landing. Paseka's first vault execution was way too high, but Carey gave it up with the big steps and no reputation points.
 
@Erin The NCAA is not hypocritical and sexist. They're terrible to every athlete equally.

Personally, I find it a bit silly that Ashton went pro. Maybe it's just me, but unless you're a star like Simone, Laurie, or Gabby, you're probably not set to make any money off of gymnastics. Heck, Ashton didn't even make the Olympic team. If talk shows or magazines or sponsors are looking for a gymnast they'll want an Olympic one because those are the only ones 99% of the public knows. Look - I get not wanting to compete through the college system, but why give that up in case you change your mind?

(Now, I do agree that the NCAA should let athletes make money off of their image, but that's a whole different issue because any change is unlikely to affect Ashton or any of these other gymnasts.)
 
A gymnast should always think long and hard before turning pro. It can be such a double-edged sword. Things must really work out and be successful for this decision to pay off, or they risk losing out on a lot if it doesn’t.

I wish the judges would be that stingy with execution on vault, where in reality it is more warranted IMO

The Germans hugging for like a week was the cutest thing ever, I’m so happy that Schaefer won, I became an instant fan in 2015 when she won bronze but didn’t hesitate to ask Simone for an autograph soon after :lol:

There was three hours of gymnastics on CBC yesterday! I cannot remember the last time there was that much coverage of the sport on tv outside the Olympics. Congratulations to all the medalists! Sad to see Belyavskiy is still a head case, at least in the AA competition.
 
So excited for Morgan to win another World medal!! She was fabulous on the beam today. I was really happy for the two German girls too. They were adorable celebrating together! :cheer:

Looks like Mai Murakami is FINALLY going to get a medal from these Worlds and I think it's gonna be gold on the FX final. SO many fourth places so I'm really happy for her. I'm also happy for Jade Carey who's done a great job at these Worlds. I thought her FX was wonderful today! :cheer2:

Ouch to Vanessa Ferrari. She just got hurt in the FX final and it doesn't look good. Thank goodness this is the last day of Worlds so these athletes can get the heck out of dodge now. :yikes: :fragile:
 
Hated beam final. Give me Silivas circa '85 any day!

Some great tumbling from the ladies but really, only Fragapane had anything resembling cohesive choreography. Jade Carey can tumble to the moon but she's no dancer! :yikes: Poor Ferrari. Christine Still commentating for the BBC thinks she did it on take off and suggested it might be her achilles. Even if it's not, the injury rate at these Worlds has been dreadful and it really needs looking at.
 
i'm so glad Murakami is a world champion :cheer: after 2 pewters it was only fair, and I think she should have been farther from Jade Carey in total score TBH

I'm just glad that it was not the same old with the U.S. taking 2 medals in most events, even with the top U.S. gymnast out with injury the U.S women are still taking home 4 medals which is quite impressive, and in general I appreciated that there was more diversity in countries represented on the medal stand
