Gymnastics News #21 - Tumbling on to Tokyo

I know Smith and Hurd counted falls and will probably do better in the final, but I would not mind at all if Murakami repeated her placement. I find her esthetically pleasing on all four events, and her floor routine is one of the few with watchable choreography.

I would love it if Murakami was world AA champion, but at the same time I Hope at least one gymnast breaks 57 in the AA final. Even for a post Olympic year this field is just :blah: the fact that nobody broke 14 on balance beam says it all.

I really hope Morgan Hurd delivers for the AA final, but I think Smith will pull at Bridget Sloan and win this.

Speaking of the few gymnasts with watchable choreography, how are the Dutch on FX this year? I haven't seen much of Worlds except for what happened tonight.

Thorsdottir has a wonderful routine where she portrays a ballerina getting stabbed. She unfortunately didn't make floor finals but I've already forgotten why not. Out of bounds maybe?

Ugh.

I can't believe Black qualified in third for the AA final. And realistically if she had last year's tumbling, she could have easily been in first. I wonder if she will risk the harder last pass with a medal on the line...

Anyway I think WAG needs a major overhaul. I mean can anyone actually think the sport is in a good place right now?

I think the FIG should have dealt with this foreseeable occurrence some years ago when the U.S. really had no competition. A lot of it was the fact that the U.S. were so strong, but also because the depth internationally has dwindled to a really sad state.

I've been wondering the same thing. I suppose that with floor as her last event and with only Murakami and Smith to go after her (where she can safely assume they will score 0.8-1.0 higher than her), that gives Black enough flexibility to see what's going on with her competitors and make a game time decision if the medal is what she is going after. It's not something we see happen very often in gymnastics but would be nice to see.

One other thing I wanted to recognize about Black's performance is that she qualified or is a reserve into every event final which is pretty incredible. I hope that she didn't waste it all in prelims is all. (And it unfortunately says as much about how the field has been decimated as it does about her performance but I am trying to find something positive here)

@DimaToe first of all, your avatar is hilarious. Regarding scores, they changed the COP after Rio. Previously, there were five composition requirements (CR) on UB, B and FX each, each was worth up to 0.5 and this was included in the D score. One of those five CRs was the dismount. That has since been removed. So to be comparable to a score from 2005(?)-2016, just add 0.5. This gives you a very rough estimate of what the gymnast would have scored last year.

To keep it even, all vault start values were lowered by .4-.5.

So this year's 55.00 AA score would have been 57.00 last year, more or less.

@Coco thanks for the “compliment” while I’m not an expert in WAG, I’m aware that code of points for this Olympic cycle lowers scores across the board, but even that being the case it seems that gymnasts like Aliya Mustafina, Larisa Iordache (damn Achilles :( ) Kyla Ross, Maggie Nichols, (insert name here) etc. Would have easily dominated the field here. This is just a really fragile field, not to take anything away from Mai Murakami, but when she had a good competition in 2015 she was 6th AA. The fact that she’s in first and Ellie Black is 3rd, both gymnasts from last quad, and Melnikova with an 11 and a 12 still managed to qualify top 10 all round. Just shows that there’s a lack of younger gymnasts pushing the sport forward, at least for this year.

I haven't had time to analyse the D score, but acro series technique aside she is definitely missing the composition requirement of acro elements in different directions. A mount cannot fulfil this.

She normally does a full twisting flic but for some reason did not perform it here.

In this interview, it sounds like Sanne just forgot to do the full twisting back handspring (and maybe didn't even realize she hadn't done it when she put the inquiry in):

Ouch.

Yeah, that Ponor interview was awfully bittersweet. (Although I'm not going to lie, I will not be the least bit surprised if she comes back in a year or two). She did give me a little giggle at the beginning where I misheard "I'm not mad, I'm peaced" as "I'm not mad, I'm pissed", which I had thought was an adorable distinction. But then when she went on to say she made peace with herself, I understood better.

Sad that there is no Romanian gymnast in any women's final. And in Montreal of all places.

Anyone knows who might have done the 3/4 side somi on beam? I thought it was cool, but completely forgot who it was.

Yes, she went out of bounds after having to take about three steps. What I would have given to be able to see that routine again... She would have made the final with a good landing on that last pass.

The gymnasium is horrible, so dark, it seems messy, you can't even get noticed if there is people in the stands, though the qualification coverage could differ from the one we will have during the TV broadcast but the atmosphere all that dark and obscure is just like an omen that this championships seems so odd and will most likely be forgettable
You mean on the broadcast?

In the venue, it doesn't feel dark, at least when looking at the competition area. I personally have no issue with the lighting. I was sitting next to someone who had been in Glasgow and asked how they found the venue, and I was told the setting was the same.

Obviously, I would have rather time traveled and watch the 1985 Worlds in Montreal instead. It's no longer the sport I used to enjoy 25 years ago. I nonetheless enjoy watching the competition, but gymnastically speaking, I know attending worlds would have been an entirely different experience back in the 90s.

Are you thinking of Pauline Schaeffer perhaps? She does a side somi with a half twist that's named after her that got quite the crowd reaction.

That's cool that you are at the event even though I agree that 1985 Worlds would have been better. I've heard over and over how great the crowd is, so keep up the good work :)

My favourite story about the crowd was the New Zealand gymnast in the men's event, Mikhail Koudinov, who was attempting a full twisting Gaylord on high bar to get it named after him. He attempted it once, fell, decided to give it a second go to get the skill in the code and fell again. He was going to give it up after that, but the crowd was urging him to try it one more time and he heard them and went for it a third time, caught it and hopefully will have it named after him.

Oh yes, it must have ben Pauline Shaeffer! Thanks! :)

Awwwww, I missed it... I had tickets for the entire event, but couldn't attend what I felt was the most interesting men's subdivision: Monday evening. Honestly, I didn't have it in me to sit from 9 AM to 9 PM for two days in a row and the other subdivisions didn't seem that interesting, so I unfortunately ended up missing all of the men's qualifying.

I certainly find the crowd engaging and encouraging and I happily clap for good tricks and performances! :D

There's just one thing I seemed to have struggled with at every gymnastics competition I've attended, even at Worlds it seems. There are a lot of people getting into and out of their seats at all time, sometimes standing up in the same spot for a while and blocking the view, etc. I can tell there are many extremely knowledgeable fans there but others can't differenciate between India on bars and Nederlands on floor. I couldn't fully appreciate Thorsdottir's floor because people were dangerously close to blocking my view.

It would help too if outside food was allowed, I must say. In between subdivisions, it meant sometimes just one hour to get something to eat and go to the toilet, and there were lines everywhere, so of course many people will come back late to their seats.

I haven't taken a look at any streaming so far so I don't know how it looks like through the feed, but aside from the issue I've just described, the settings and atmosphere, from a live audience perspective, is definitely enjoyable. :) People are positive and really supportive, even when a gymnast struggles.

I’ve enjoyed the competition so far but my only gripe is the annoying commentary in the arena. My eyes hurt from rolling them too much when she goes on about floor ex music matching the performer’s personality. The beam is the size of your cellphone and so on. I’m hoping she stops talking so much during finals.
I also laughed at the “Rotation, Rotation” jingle and enjoy how people in the stands groove to it. Cellphone lights are pretty in the dark arena.

I am watching the men's AA on the Olympic Channel. Nastia, Tim Daggett and Roesthlisberger? Why do they hate us?

Video of Larisa's injury. Looks like she got too much height and was thwarted backwards in the air :(

https://youtu.be/yFf7V4EdrTg

She's been my favorite after Mustafina the past few years and was the one I looked forward to seeing the most this weekend

You have a point. But I had to laugh when John and Nastia got a dig in about "Gymnastics 101."

Nastia: I thought we going to go a whole show without it!:rofl::rofl:

Tim was not amused.

LOL I've always wanted somebody to say something to Tim about his 'Gymnastics 101' thing, I never understand what it means and how hard he tries to make it like part of the gymnastics vocabulary

Men's All Around was entertaining with bit of suspense until the end

Gold and Silver for chinese who I dont recall the name. Bronze for the new all arounder Kenzo Shirai. David Belyavskiy was leading for the russians until the final rotation but fall of the high bar and ended fourth.

Yul Moldauer finished 7th for the americans, consistent performance but his Difficulty isnt that high enough to be near the podium, he will need to step up his game in the near future

I was rooting for Larisa to win the AA, in part because of her Olympics disappointment but also because she's my favorite gymnast currently competing. I'm so gutted for her. :(

So bummed for Larisa. I was looking forward to seeing her too. :(

FYI: If anyone is interested in going to this event, all event tickets for the 2018 American Cup being held in Hoffman Estates, IL (near Chicago) went on sale this morning at 10 AM CST. Mom and I are going and I ended up getting some great seats for us. The tickets are actually for the Nastia Cup, the American Cup, and this junior elite men's team competition that's held after the American Cup (I guess last year was the first time they held it). I think it's going to be fun and I'm looking forward to seeing who all is there next spring. :cheer:

I will hoooopefully be getting my tickets tonight after our plans are finalized :D Prices aren't so bad considering there's access to 3 separate meets. I live so much closer to Chicago now, the logistics are a whole lot easier for me than they were for the Skate Americas that were held in the same venue.

Yes, I agree. Especially being there, you'd think that for once you'd be spared the commentators, but no... On the other hand, some spectators appreciate, apparently, because I heard a girl behind me say after a fall "they should say how much of a deduction it is".

The relief is that at least both the French commentator (I keep forgetting his name) and Carol Angela Orchard are knowledgeable and while simplistic, at least their comments make sense. They use the proper vocabulary. Even the host who interacts with the crowd seems to understand the sport. I'm so used to TV hosts having little knowledge of the sport that I keep being amazed. There are little mistakes here and there but you can tell it's mostly because a lot is going on, not because they do not know. I had to smile when Orchard told us yesterday that the previous world champions in Montreal in 1985 were Oxana Omelianchik and Elena Chusovitina! The guy then translated but without the mistake.

I also laughed at the “Rotation, Rotation” jingle and enjoy how people in the stands groove to it. Cellphone lights are pretty in the dark arena.
Yes, those were good ideas! :)

Today I took a St. Lawrence river boat cruise and what a small world it is...Zach Clay was on board. He was so gracious with his fans and took several pic with people. He and his family were sitting right next to me. I’m American and kept thinking “I should know that man, I think it’s Canada’s National champions ” Then a young girl approached him and I was right. Just quickly told him I appreciated his performance last night. He loved the crowd and seemed to be a little sad that it’s so dark, they could only really hear us, not see us.

Well this thing has just been blown wide open... AGAIN.

There's a reason #TrashWorlds has been a popular hashtag on Twitter this week.

Wow.

Go Morgan!
