From Russia With Love [#40]: Summer 2021 & into the Olympic season

I am not an advocate for skaters competing while injured. I understand why they do it, but I am not going to be thinking badly about him for withdrawing from the nationals. If they can afford it and still be sent to the top competitions, that’s fine with me. Maybe they did it as precaution, maybe they ‘didn’t need to’ withdraw but who am I to decide whether his injury is serious enough? He will be the one who lives with the consequences of his decisions, not me. And at least some of the newer/younger teams got their chance to get on the podium at the nationals, so I am happy.
Well if you put it that way. But if he is that fragile, why send them to Euros or OGs? Give a stronger younger team the spot, not so?

As above, I don’t think he will be competing at the Europeans. I think they will do short dance at the team event, and then they can see whether he is able to do the individual event. If not, at least they have one medal certain.

Of course it can happen in two weeks. That’s why I don’t really believe they will be competing at the Europeans. They will keep their strength for the Olympics.
Hmm...let me leave it there because whichever way you look at it, it doesn't look good.

Who cares how it looks? Sin/Kats want olympic medal. That’s their biggest priority at this moment.
Federation wants Sin/Kats to help to get the olympic medal. Neither Sin/Kats nor the federation really care how it looks, or what you, me or any other posters at skating forum thinks about their strategy.

I wasn't looking at the mere optics actually. Just the cold realities of the health issues. Their ambitions are clear enough but sometimes one can be too ambitious. Knowing them they will pin them together using nuts and bolts and prop them up on crutches to get what they both want. To them all this is honorable but to me personally it is tacky and violates the sporting priniciple. But do I care personally. No, not really. Honestly, I just laugh at their stupidity.

I think they will do the SD in team event. FD will be done by SB.
They would be insane to use D/S
It depends how the points are looking.
If SK get 1st place for the RD, then the worst the 2nd team can come on the FD is 5th.
That might still be enough for gold as long as the men do their job.

The bigger problem, and I just said it in the Qualification for the Team Event thread, is that Russia really SHOULD be substituting in both Pairs and Women, not Dance. There is no way that the RFSF is going to go against Moskvina if she wants both MishGal and BoiKoz to skate in the TE so that they can get out on Olympic ice and compete at least one program during the window between Euros and the Pairs event in Beijing. The TE is a good 10 days before the Pairs competition starts, so it fits the bill perfectly. Same situation with the Women, otherwise they risk another Lipnitskaya 2014 situation. Either SinKats do both segments or Russia uses StepBuk and hopes for the best.

Kolyada will need to do both events in Team Event, and then another 2 in individual.

Will RSF have Kolyada skip Euros? There's no way he can handle 6 skates within 1 month span.

They could have skate off between Semenenko and Mozalev for 3rd spot. Mishin might be willing to go with that strategy to rest Kolyada, and that gives Semenenko one more chance for that Olympic spot.

It looked like a party when Trankov, Zagitova and Medvedeva were trying to interview the girls all together :)

The team of commentators also decided to support Tatiana Tarasova: they were wearing t-shirts with her portraits and with quotes from her emotional comments
t.a.tarasova: Thank you, my friends! I’m with you!

Euro's team was announced:

Men: Kondratyuk, Kolyada, Semenenko
Ladies: Valieva, Trusova, Scherbakova
(Muravieva is the first SUB but she is not eligible)
Pairs: Mishina/Gallyamov, Boikova/Kozlovskii, Tarasova/Morozov
Ice Dance: Stepanova/Bukin, Davis/Smolkin, Sinitsina/Katsalapov

Smeneneko instead of Mozalev, Smenenenko helped Russia earned 3 spots last Worlds
but If you look into the current season results both were 7th in GP but Mozalev has better scores in the freeskate

maybe this isn't a final decision and if Semenenko bombs Euros
they'll have a skate off.

I don't think there will be a skate off, but if Semenenko bombs Euros then he'll be replaced by Mozalev for the Olympics. You're right, neither of them exactly burned it up on the GP, so they're kind of interchangeable, IMO.

Machine translated excerpt:

Mark Kondratyuk almost ended his career in junior age due to injury, Katarina Gerboldt, one of the athlete's coaches, told RIA Novosti.
18-year-old Kondratyuk won the Russian Championship in St. Petersburg on Friday.
“I am insanely happy for Mark and all the coaches. This is a victory that has been long awaited and has been coming to it for a long time. Mark has always been a very talented athlete, and we all tried to reveal his positive qualities, of which there are a lot. Relatively recently he had a serious injury. I was recovering for a year, I was thinking about retirement," said Gerboldt.
“But then everyone waited for him, believed that Mark would still skate at a high level. And most importantly, he believed and showed that all his efforts were not in vain. I am proud of him and I think that he deserved to win. This is not an easy victory. This is a long-awaited victory that required a lot of work and effort. He went through a lot, endured and achieved the result he was striving for," she added.

yea I wonder too about Dima. Im glad I saw him and his beautiful Walz in Grenoble (same with Liza, the empress who isnt going to Euros either)
I had 2 wishes in the Mens competiton that Aliev and Kolyada would skate well. I get to see one of them at Euros so guess I should be happy but Im not.
I can see why its unfair Mozalev doesn´t get to go to Euros but neither he or Semenenko move me with their skating so...
Marc, funny to watch but his skating is so unpolished.

So, something I noticed in the ISU Communication for the TE https://isu.org/figure-skating/rules/fsk-communications/26711-isu-communication-2443/file... There is a form listing the available athletes in each discipline that each fed must complete and it's due to the ISU by Jan 11th. There are only three lines available for each discipline. I wonder if the ISU is going to give Russia an extension to the form deadline since they won't know the Euros results until the 15th.

The one who called her fat? (well IF that's how it went down... ? maybe it was a more magnanimous split and they are okay with each other?) She is a nicer human than I would ever be
Some skaters are getting on better when they don’t skate together any more. Mukhametzianova and Mironov both said that their relationship improved after they stopped skating together!

Good for them. Not saying I know the ins and outs of their relationship...

Any update on Dimitri?

dmitry_solovyev: My dear relatives, friends, colleagues, spectators! My gratitude to you is endless! Your support and love give me the strength to fight! I sincerely thank the doctors for their professionalism and rapidness! Special thanks to Tatyana Navka @tatiana_navka for immediate help and faith in my strength! My condition has now stabilized. I am determined to overcome this injury and hope to return to you as soon as possible!
Low bow to everyone who is near now! Every day I do everything possible, everything in my power: I follow the recommendations of the doctors and follow all their instructions in order to return to a full life again and to actualize everything what was planned!
Many thanks to Vasya Konov @vasilykonov, Tina Kandelaki @tina_kandelaki and all the media for their tactful attitude.
My best girl, Annie @curlme_anna, your support, love and care do wonders! You are always by me and in touch with the doctors, you bring all those tasty things to the hospital, you give an endless amount of help! I could not even imagine that you have so much strength!
Lenochka @nashalena, my director, without you no one would know about this story, because none of us wanted to make it public, but now I understand that you were right. People should see what can happen in life, what should be done and what shouldn’t be done. Any action implies responsibility.
And, of course, mommy! Thank you for everything! I promise first of all after the hospital I’ll come to you to hug you tight!
