I selfishly hope Pogo isn't pregnant (à la Mustafina for those who are watching gymnastics). I would love to see her back on the ice! But congrats to them- she s actually not too young to get married for Russian standards.

Hey, Mustafina is still a boss, I could get behind this!

Anyways, she's 20 and while it's a wee bit on the young side, it's not unheard of even in the US (my grandma was married at 19) so if she's going to be happy, YAY ANNA!

whoever worked on your legislation, I would love to discuss with them the common sense behind it. So a 16 year old person in your country is criminally responsible for their actions, can be sent to a prison, is able to get married (at least with parental consent), is able to drive a car, but let’s protect them from harmful drinking? What is potentially more damaging to a vulnerable young person, getting drunk or being stuck in an unwanted marriage?

Here’s another irony - at 18 you can vote, be drafted in the army and killed in combat, but you can’t be trusted with alcohol

Of course not. What if you got drunk... :p But seriously, someone should sort out the priorities. Isn’t it supposed to be about protecting children and young people?

I've always thought the United States should switch the drinking age and the driving age. Drink at 16, while you are still required to go to school, but you can't drive till 21.

Your conversation made me curious so I looked up the history behind the drinking age:

Per this website, the national drinking age was set at 21 due to the danger of individuals getting killed by a drunk driver.
https://www.boston.com/culture/health/2014/07/17/why-21-a-look-at-our-nations-drinking-age

"During the late 1960s and 1970s, nearly all states lowered the drinking age to 18. This led to a huge increase in alcohol-related car accidents and drunk driving was deemed a public health crisis. In the mid-1970s, 60 percent of all traffic fatalities were alcohol related, according to the National Institute of Health(NIH). Over two-thirds of car accidents involving persons aged 16 to 20 were alcohol-related."

Essentially, it sounds as though the law wasn't put into place only to protect young people but to protect anyone on the road from young drunk drivers.

I haven't noticed an epidemic of 16-year-olds stuck in unwanted marriages. I'd assume that the average age for most people getting married has gone up rather than down.

It should probably be noted that it is more difficult for teenagers to get a driver's license these days than it used to be. So the hazards of teen driving are being dealt with in both ways.

Well, so the reason why people can’t drink is because you are worried about being knocked down by a drunk driver. So one is mature enough to drive, but not mature enough to know that they shouldn’t drink before they are driving. Wouldn’t you be more worried about letting immature driver in charge of vehicle that can accidentally kill a lot of people, rather than someone drinking before driving?

Her past coaches are impressive, Tsareva, Tutberidze, Butsaeva, and yet she has never even qualified for Russian nationals. No novice nationals, junior, the older age or senior nationals... on Russian standard she obviously is very underachiever within Russia. Her best score is 177 at home competition two years ago.

When I was in college, the drinking age moved up one year at a time, from the time I was 18 to 21, so I was lucky. The theory was that they didn't mind 18-year-olds drinking, but that if the drinking age was 18, that meant in reality that kids three years younger were drinking, so if you raised the age to 21, in that new math, 18-year-olds would be drinking. To my peers, that was WTF?

States, which control the drinking age, caved into the Federal government, which threatened to take away Federal highway funds from states that refused to raise it.

How about purchasing a handgun, which I believe 16 year olds are allowed to do in, of all places, Vermont, Bernie Sanders' country.

OK, some more googled data because, again, I was curious. I'll pledge to not look up any more;).

current #of gun-related deaths in the U.S. each year-33,636
current #of gun-related deaths in Russia each year-the rate is @10 times less
current #of alcohol-related deaths in the U.S. each year-88,000
current #of alcohol-related deaths in Russia each year-500,000

Full version of the interview with World junior silver medalists Polina Kostiukovich/Dmitri Ialin and their coach Vasili Velikov on the website of the Russian Figure Skating Federation (with some photos of them and the coaches):
http://www.fsrussia.ru/intervyu/376...ad-idti-nelzya-i-ostanavlivatsya-ne-nado.html

Dmitri even did some judging at childrens' competitions and therefore feels with judges that hear the same music over and over again. :)

Her mother should travel with her, just saying.

But I concur with others she is lovely. If singles doesn't work out she may have the makings of a great pairs girls or beautiful ice dance partner. Is she too young for Drozd? I mean if he could try out with Staviskaya? Don't you judge me. :D:D
