Apparently, Sue Grafton had been battling cancer for the past two years. According to her daughter, she had been doing well but suffered a somewhat sudden decline, passing away last night surrounded by family and friends.

The family says the alphabet series ends at Y.

I have always wanted to start this series but seem to get sidetracked. Bless her heart...RIP.

I certainly didn't read every book but the ones I did, I enjoyed. RIP. Good thoughts to her friends, family and fans.

I didn't realize the series was so close to a conclusion. I wonder if there is even a rough draft somewhere.

I'm sad to hear of Grafton's passing. I wasn't aware that she had been ill.

My heart goes out to her family.

I am sad to hear this too. From the picture on her books, she looks to be in her 30s or 40s so I was quite shocked to hear she died. But it seems she's in her 70s so I guess that's not as shocking. Still sad news though.

The obsessive in me is going to be constantly annoyed by the series ending with Y. :slinkaway

Been reading her books for years, so sorry to hear of her passing. The alphabet ends with Y, she did not believe in ghost writers and had not even started the last book. RIP

I read that "Z is for Zero" was the title but she had not started writing it yet.

It would be cool if someone could do a biology or a book about the series to serve as the "final chapter".

This reminded me of the Mary Daheim Alpine books. People thought Alpine Zen would be it, but there is now an "Alpha Alpine" - book #27. I'll have to reserve that from the library. I've never read any of her other series.

Thanks coco

May she rest in peace. Enjoyed her books and had been looking forward to z. Maybe they should hold a contest to see who could write the best sequel.

My mother loved those. She only lived through X, and I am not even sure she read that one. I think W might have been the last one she read.

I had no idea. I checked my LibraryThing and had finished all her books up to X. Her early ones helped me get through some tough times many years ago.

Reading Y is for Yesterday will have a whole different significance now. Thanks for letting us know Coco.
