Ashley Wagner Cheer Thread #3: The Subject of Tonight's Lecture...

@nimi I agree that it sounds like Ashley may be done with competitive skating, and if that is the case, I wish her as much success in her future endeavors as she has had in skating. World silver medalist, Olympic team bronze medalist, 3-time national champ, 3-time GPF medalist, 5-time GP champ and many more times GP medalist - that is an impressive run.

Good luck to Ashley!

From the linked article, Ashley on Adam's Olympics success and wider recognition:

"It was time for someone like Adam to be received in the way that he was. Taking a step back and having him show the world just what he's about, and show the world, yes, he's a gay athlete and he has these skills on the ice, and he's kind and he's smart. ... To see the world receiving him in the way that they are -- he's so easy to love."

So despite what she said in her interviews, Ashley is no longer following Adam on Instagram and hasn’t liked or commented on any of his photos in several weeks, something which she used to do regularly. Personally, I think she’s putting on a front in interviews. I think there’s a rift there. Normally she would be all over things like him being on the Ellen show or at least liking his photos. The fact that there’s been nothing throughout the games or post other than mentions in an interview says to me something is up which makes me very sad. Looks like he’s replaced Ashley with Mirai now.
A little jealousy perhaps?

A little jealousy perhaps?
Total speculation but it seems Adam is a fair weather friend. Ashley had tweeted that he didn't return her texts. Incidentally, Mirai made a joke on the Oscars red carpet about some celebrity complaining that Adam doesn't return her texts (Margot Robbie?) so it seems like a thing.

It is impressive. I wish the haters would remember that. She accomplished a lot. And all by someone who professes to not be the most natural talent.

Total speculation
This is the part of your post that I 100% agree with.

I mean... There was, like, one sarcastic joke Ashley made on twitter and then someone claimed that Ashley wasn't following him on Insta for, what, a couple of days (also we're supposed to pretend accidental unfollows on social media never ever happen, I guess?) and that was enough to turn this thread basically into a tragic fanfic where the narrative has "jealous" Ashley being cruelly dumped by her BFF who's not a BFF but a flakey, ice-cold bitch who was never a real friend in the first place? Oh lordy

Exaggerate much? Has everything you ever posted here been a cold hard fact backed up by high quality randomized controlled trials? No? I qualified my post as speculation. No one made you read it past that line.

And 4CC Champion :)

Ashley certainly had an impressive career. I really, really hope she becomes some sort of commentator so she can openly opine on things that she likes and doesn't like without getting backlash like "yeah like you could even do that"

What's sad is that Ashley almost always skates clean(ish) at least once a season. I feel like she was due to deliver it at the Olympics.

A related thought - looking at how the US ladies, Sakamoto and Sotskova skated in PC, how should the qualification system work to ensure / discourage skaters from competitive nations to not peak at Nationals?

Pics of Ashley being Adam's +1 at the HRC gala, wearing a really nice dress that shows off her tattoo :glamor:

I'm really glad that she was there with him for this event. Adam talked in an interview the other day about how Ashley has been there for him for years through all his ups and downs. I remember her being among the few American Olympians from the Sochi Olympics to speak out against Russia's gay policies.

This. All the way. I had one concern with her in 2017 and that was the two popped triples at Worlds LP and at Nationals this January. Until 2017, I literally cannot recall a time when AW failed to rotate the majority of rotations she had planned. The fact that the pops happened on her 3-3 combos indicates to me, that her ability to pull either off had started to slip. Considering she used to have a 1-season expiration on 3-3s, she held onto 3f-3t remarkably well in the SP and it was still looking OK compared to, say, Sochi, when her original 3f-3t technique was a struggle. And, the 3-1-3 pop could likely have been fixed with ramped up training.

I think she had gotten over her past SP issues and would have at worst skated a clean program with a < on the 3t, and maybe a L3 spin in there. High 60s minimum is a score I would bet money on if she were able to train to peak for the Games. In the LP, Helsinki was maybe the only time she didn't come out blazing in the LP after a not-so-encouraging SP; otherwise, her record speaks for itself. 99% of the time, we got a clean program with an average of two <'s and one L3 spin. Unfortunately, the "E" returned this year, too, after having been her strongest jump in Spring 2015. Regardless, she was more likely to have skated a totally flawless program than to have made mistakes beyond what I just mentioned.

Her final total may have only put her in 8th or so, but if she rotated that 3t in the SP a hair more, received a "!" in the LP, etc., she had an equally plausible chance of being 5th-ish, which - unless you want to believe Mirai can ever duplicate her (historic and memorable regardless) team LP - was not rationally in the cards for ANY of the 3 U.S. skaters. Anyone could see that the PCS gap alone should have ensured AW a place, because the other 3 were just not going to get the scores needed and shouldn't.

I know I'm an uber and can spend a day defending the girl, but she really was consistently screwed by the USFS and despite people commenting to the contrary, I think she remained poised and focused on her own tasks vs. the politics, save for the infamous slip-ups. She has been far and away the #1 American skater internationally, but that, a World silver, and a GP win weren't enough to give her a 4th National title last season when it could have been easily justified, just as medals in 2014 and 2018 would have been. In most other countries, she would have won 2016 and 2017 Nationals and made this OG team. As National Champ, might she have scraped a few extra points in the SP at Worlds to get into the final flight? What impact did skating in the penultimate group have on her competitiveness? Either way, even if she had spent all of this time since Boston on her couch eating Chipotle, she never received the support that has been commonplace for established skaters. In a battle year with Slutskaya, would USFS judges put Jenny Kirk over Michelle because of a fluke mistake? No - they were in totally different leagues. Pretending any of the 3 OG girls had PCS that could touch Ashley's is as ludicrous as AP McDonough having won 2003 Nationals.

Thank you to whomever reiterated her record which is so often forgotten. Pre-AW, she had skaters dropping into the teens as National Champions with 3 spots gone for far too long. 2012-2017 top 7 finishes each year, earning the record for most GPF appearances and perhaps medals, winning GP events through 16-17, winning 4CC over Asada, three LP 'mini medals' from 2012, 2015, and 2016, with a close 4th from 2014... I don't anticipate any mini medals next month from BT, MN, or KC. I have no issues with them since they can't be blamed for judging, but they are the ones who were supposedly better picks in January and direct comparison seems fair.

@JJS5056 You definitely won't see any mini-medals from Karen, since she has withdrawn.

I'm not sure which are the "most other countries" that would have given skaters like Ashley titles and Olympic spots when she was a little off. Those countries would not be the major skating powerhouses today, Russia (where ladies event =The Hunger Games) or Japan (which isn't that far behind and was willing to let the great Mao Asada drop down to 12th in her last season). Do you want to compare the US to Italy with one top-ten lady or to China with none? We obviously aren't Russia or Japan but landing three ladies in the top 11 at the Olympics after poor skates from all of them puts us in a different position from most other countries.

cross-posting for those who'd rather stay away from the US Ladies thread and the rehashed Ashley debate going on over there ATM
Not sure if this has been posted here already, but Ashley said on her IG that she notified Mariah already a while ago that she was going to take a break from skating and wasn't planning on taking the alternate spot if offered. So Mariah has had time to prepare for Worlds as the de facto 1st alternate.

I'm not 100% sure if "take an intentional season of rest away from skating" means just skipping the rest of this season (i.e. Worlds), or rest of this season plus the next GP season, or the whole 2018-19 season. TBH the last option seems the most probable to me, but then again she might not be 100% sure herself at this point, hence the vague wording.

Her twitter post is clearer that it’s the rest of this season. She has stated previously she will decide about her future after SOI and some time off this summer.

Wagner's 3 tweets yesterday (copied out below & originally posted in the U.S. Ladies thread): https://twitter.com/AshWagner2010/status/974740948834951168
A few months ago, I made the choice to listen to my heart and body and take an intentional period of rest away from skating, closing out this season. This time of heart healing has been essential, and not rushing the process is just as essential.
In preparing to take a step back, I notified my training mate, Mariah Bell, that I was not planning on taking the alternate spot should I be called in so that she could prepare and be ready for Worlds, just in case.
I am confident that she will head into this competition and shine the way she always does, and wish all of the US ladies the best of luck at Worlds!
To lighten the atmosphere a bit, this was taped last week: https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrit...pon-and-ashley-wagner-prove-their-bff-status/

I'm sorry Ashley isn't going to Worlds - I would've loved to have seen her perform her La La Land FS in front of international judges! I am glad though that she gave Mariah the heads up in plenty of time! All my best to Ashley, I hope she regroups and comes back next year!

Another Ashley interview conducted when she was doing the Figure Skating in Harlem thing

https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/this-life-altering-experience-shifted-olympian-ashley-wagner

Yet another interview that seems to have been conducted @ FSH, for people.com
“For me, this is still all so fresh,” she says. “I want to give myself the time to actually process it and figure out what I want. If I can, at the end of the day, be like ‘Okay, Nationals, I’m satisfied with what I did and I feel good with that,’ then I’ll totally be okay bowing out. But if I get through the summer and think ‘That’s not enough for me, I want to do it my way,’ then I’ll keep going.”

In the meantime, she’s embracing life in Southern California: going to the beach, doing yoga, thinking about a future career in media and spending some time in the sun, rather than on the ice.

“Discovering what normal life is like is so exciting for me right now.”
