2026 Olys Pairs SP PBP - Veni, Vidi, Wedgie

I always get the sense that Minerva and Savin are very close (in a good, not creepy way). I remember an interview with her where she said (paraphrasing) that Russian coaches are very strict and lots of yelling but that she is never yelled at since Savin knows how self motivated she is and rather needs someone to stop her instead of pushing her for her going above her limit.

and I am glad that she had the guts to leave Noolan Seegert - she was just a middle of the pack skater before Volodin as well. It is crazy.

The Kovalevs qualified, wow. What happened to the 2nd Japanese team? I have always thought they were pretty good and looking to make their mark. I hope the Australians can get back to form, always liked them. Excited to watch soon. Proud of our US pairs, both above 70 points. Lia and Trennt have looked really good, like I said, hunker down, don't let the hype get to you! I can't believe they are in 3rd place. But I know they have worked hard and deserve it!
They weren't competing in Japan/Asia? They've gotten better since they had success in China this season at Skate to Milano and 4CCs and last season at Asian Winter Games but they weren't clean at Finlandia, just like they've struggled outside of Japan in previous seasons. It's a clear pattern at this point in time, but they may work through it during the next Olympic cycle.

He had 6 different partners in Russia and never managed to make the Russian team at nationals. There were various reasons none of his partnerships worked out, but it looked like his career was over. Then he ended up in Germany and Hase (who also had different partners--Blomeret's girlfriend demanded he quit skating with her) happened to be partnerless and there you have it. Right place and right timing for both of them. He preserved and look where he is now.
Hase skated with Nolan Seegert. Blommaerts girlfriend was the reason Annika had to look for a new partner

Canada having the most unexpected figure skating results of any country this Olympics. Hopefully it revives public interest and attendance at events up there. 🙏

I intend to get a ticket for CSOI in Toronto (my travel plans aligns with that show), which I normally never do. I intend to attend Skate Canada as well--my first live skating event since 2018 Skate America.

Pereira/Michaud should arguably be in second. This Olympics is wild.

I love when I can wuzrob Canadian skaters! Dance, men, and now pairs!

I think I enjoyed Ellie and Danny the most. I don't know why, but I just love how they skate together in spite of their inevitable mistakes.
You know they look so happy to be there. They’ve got a GOLD medal- it’s the bonus zone for Danny and Ellie and I hope they just enjoy themselves. I told my partner last night that the thing I really admired about Danny is through how the last few years he has stood beside Ellie You never felt like there was any blame for anything that went wrong. He has firmly believed she could land those throws

I don’t know, I think the United States is having some pretty unexpected results. Who would’ve thought that Danny and Ellie were going to have two clean skates in a row and who would’ve thought that Ilia would melt down
Now Canada is having the most positive results, but there are a lot of countries looking at the results right now going what just happened

can’t wait to see what happens in the next week

Why wasn't Miura and Kihara's lift judged to be a more serious error?

Seems crazy to me that Stellato and Deschamps ended up with lower GOE for a gorgeous lift with a fluke trip on the exit than Miura and Kihara had for a lift that came down midway.

I need to :COP: the scoring guidelines, but I'm really surprised this isn't an automatic -5. One judge gave it -2 and others -3.

Separately, looks like one judge did see the late catch on the twist that only allezfred seemed to notice.

Curious also to the technical reason that S-D&D's fall was deemed to be on the lift and not after it. I had the same thought as (I believe) Belinda.

So there wasn’t an AIN pair with a clean history? Or did Russia just put up an “eff you” pair like they did for dance?
Russia nominated Mishina/Galliamov and they were denied - probably because they attended the Kremlin reception for Olympic medalists with Putin right in March 2022. I could have sworn he posted some pro-Russia stuff early on in the war, but I'm pretty sure Moskvina had him scrub it really quickly afterward, but that may have also been found (if my memory serves) by the company the ISU hired for the review of the AIN nominees.
Doesn’t explain Lia and Trent either. lol.
Nope - and it doesn't explain both VLDigs and ChtWoz also having Season's Best SPs today; plus SuiHan were much better today than in the TE SP.

The only teams that underperformed compared to the TE were MetBeru - fairly minor issue with the step-out on the throw & still a solid 75 score today; and MiuKih - with the major lift error & messy skate in general today, underperforming by over 9 points from the TE SP.

Germans were spot on - well deserved score, this program shows off their strengths so brilliantly.

Georgians - steady and (mostly) solid as ever.

Lia/Trennt - they're a little white on rice for me but they were very solid here and looked a lot faster and more powerful than the Hungarians.

Hungarians - solid elements but this program/music really drags.

Japanese - gutted for them. Can't see them overcoming the German's 7 point lead. SAD!!!

Sui/Han - did decently all things considered.

Kam/O - 3 for 3 in terms of strong solid skates. C'mon team - go 4 for 4!!!!

Conti/Macii - this was a surprise. Don't really follow pairs so don't know the levels that well but seems like they lost a lot of them.

Chan/Howe - really great skate for them. They are so pleasing to watch.

Stellato/Deschamps - oof, that fall on the lift cost them about 10 places in the standings. Brutal error in an event like this.

And echoing the anger that the French qualified over the Dutch. Musing over the evil machinations that conspired to generate that result :EVILLE:

Did she not want him skating with a girl? With a person? WTF.
I think she was super-jealous, but the way Efimova later talked about her experience skating for Germany with Blommaert I think he also wasn’t a very useful partner even without crazy girlfriend (not that he treated anybody bad, but it sounded as if Efimova was giving 150% percent and well he didn’t).

I saw the late catch, too. It reminded me of how Chinese gymnasts land their Yurchenko loops on balance beam, totally bending at the waist with the torso quite low.

His girlfriend has a reputation for being really insecure - pretty sure she was the reason he broke up with Mari Vartmann before Hocke. Wiki says he was partnered with Pavlova between Hocke & Efimova, which I did not recall.

Blommaert had at least 2 partnership breakups that were blamed on his jealous girlfriend. By the time he partnered with Efimova he and that girlfriend had supposedly broke up already. But he dumped her quickly too. Methinks the jealous girlfriend could have been a scapegoat for a flakey Blommaert.
