Malinin posts often on social media how he can basically just step into 3A's and quads without any preparation. Knowing he can snap into everything so quick, I wish he'd take a lot of the telegraphing out regardless of whether they are quads. The beginning minute and change is nothing but preparation for jumps.

I don't think the program layout nor the music adds a ton of excitement to the difficulty he's actually putting out on the ice.

I feel like most of Ilia's work went into the SP. Not sure how I feel about this long. I'm not really invested in it yet. Maybe it will get better end of season when he is more comfortable with it.

Malinin

Some nice quads. Definitely attempting to perform more, but it doesn't look natural yet. Some of his landings quite slidey today, rather than finishing on a strong exiting edge. Ending choreo looked more him than some of the earlier choreo. Finishes on a strong note.

Malinin is still such a kid.

So the program still looks new and a little empty. But he took his time, committed to the choreography (what there was of it), and skated very well. He's doing all the things he needs to do.

I am going to give full credit to Ilia because it looks like he's been working hard not just on his presentation and performing but I feel like his jumps look cleaner than they did in competition last year.

I'm not completely sold on the program just yet, but I also don't hate it.

Ilia, my boy! He's kicking himself for popping the 4lo into a double, but this program has some really nice parts. Shae-Lynn is doing good work helping him develop as a performer.

Ilia not quite as ready with the lp and the jumps a bit sketchy, but promising and same comment about the progress we saw in the sp, and, sitting here alone, I literally yelled wow at that leap toward the end.

You are. But he’s gotten the dramatic angst down, he’s really improved his presentation.

And if Sota had landed one 3A he would have medaled.

Okay so it is exactly a year to the weekend last year when I saw Ilia live at US Classic in Lake Placid landing the first ever Quad Axel. I will never ever forget that moment, and it made me admire Ilia but I wasn’t yet a fan as there wasn’t enough to his skating than the jumps.

However, this program and his improvement has turned me into a fan! Beautiful program. Far more stretch, feeling the music and attention to detail than in the past. Dialing back the technical difficulty has been so smart as it’s allowed a much better balance. He’s also grown a lot. He was sitting next to me yesterday with his Dad and I saw him throughout the past 2 days but you don’t realize his growth until you see him on the ice. He’s got nice line now and a better presence. Great job Ilia!!
