Well, there's that, plus, while I know the hosts are allowed to do this, I really don't think they should be assigning skaters who haven't even competed in a Challenger, and thus no ISU minimum total score, to those spots.
 
Updating the GP Alternates lists with today's announcements -

Current vacant spots (apart from the GPdF host spots - 2 men, 2 women, 1 pairs, 1 dance) - 1 NHK pairs - no country is maxed out

Potential vacant spots - 1 SCI woman (Kihira injury) - both JPN & USA are maxed out; 1 GPdF & NHK man (Grassl potential doping violation - see the Italian news thread) - FRA & JPN maxed out at GPdF, JPN maxed out at NHK

Several of points to note -

1) Japan is maxed out in Men's and Women's at every single event, so unless the skater that WDs is Japanese, then on the Men's Alternates list Shmuratko will be moved up to the first group of 10 for consideration, and on the Women's Alternates list van Zundert or Hilmer will be moved up to the first group of 10 for consideration.

2) USA is maxed out in Ice Dance at every event save for NHK (2 entries) and the SkAm TBD spot, so unless the team that WDs is from the US or the event is NHK, then Lanaghan/Razgulajevs & Komatsubara/Koleto will be moved up to the first group of 10 for consideration.

I was on the fence between thinking they'd get it or Zhang/Yang.

Updated Pairs alternates list -

I fully expect the Mokhovs to get the SkAm TBD spot based off the results from John Nicks IPC. GPdF host TBD spot is still in the air, but I'm leaning toward Piegad/Strekalin being tapped for it since they've been assigned a 2nd Challenger (season debut at Lombardia tomorrow and then Finlandia next month).

I also won't be surprised if any teams who meet the minimum total score at these upcoming Challengers are added to the alternates list as was the case last season.

I'm not 100% sure. I think, if they don't select a French man then they have to use the alternates list, but whether they're obligated to select someone from the alternates top 10 or they can choose anyone on the SB 75 list (and Lewton Brain is on that list, but pretty far down), is a good question since it's a host spot.

I really like him and It's his 7th senior season and he has never received a grand prix. Last year he just missed minimums in the short for Worlds

Technically, any of the three host spots not given to a host skater is a spot that goes back into the pool and is subject to the same rules as non-host spots.
