2017 Fall-Spring TV New/Returning Shows

I think the guy who mentions the nominees is a guy. He sucks too. But the one who is summarizing the winner's career while they walk to the stage is a woman. And she annoys.

They're both annoying but I honestly thought it was the same person. :yikes:
 
I don't usually watch award shows but I am watching the Emmys tonight and quite enjoying it.
 
Interesting that as of now at least, the Emmys were rated very low, similar to last year. Sure, it's hard to be up against football, but at the same time many (most?) homes have multiple tvs plus people viewing online so it's not like families have to choose one or the other. Maybe I just don't know how ratings work, :lol:.

By most accounts and the parts I tuned in for, the show was great - well hosted, great star turnout, etc. My theory, other than that people these days have a lot more choices on how to spend an evening being entertained than ever, is that there are simply too many shows - in other words, shows are winning that not everyone watches, or even has the ability to watch, or that they've even heard of (Atlanta?). The big name stars who get the guest star/limited series Emmys help (thanks Nicole), but really, how many people actually watch Veep compared to the network comedies that most are familiar with and have likely seen at least a few episodes of? It also means that many excellent shows and performances are shut out entirely, not even getting nominations, which is annoying for loyal viewers of those shows.
 
One moment of the Emmys that surprised me was after all the talk about diversity, the only Indian winner of the night stepped up to the mike to say thank you after winning an Emmy...and the mike was cut off. Aziz Ansari did not get to say one word. :eek: Mind you, his co-winner was a female writer of colour who belongs to the GLBTQ community who spoke first. But it seemed strange that this moment of diversity was cut before it even started. I also thought it strange that it seemed like all the mentions were about black folk, as if the only two races on the planet are white and black. :huh:

It was the same person. I also thought his voice was quite annoying. It's great to add a little colour to the mix, but why couldn't they have picked one of those late-night smooth jazz DJ's with a beautiful, deep voice to do that talking?? :confused:
 
Sterling K. Brown was also cut short. Too bad, because his speech was friggin' hilarious. "Best white family a brother could ever have, better than Mr. Drummond, better than Webster's parents". LOL!

The Actor for The Night Of (name escapes me, never saw it) is also Indian, I believe. All three lead actor Emmys went to a man of colour.

Riz Ahmed is of Pakistani background I believe.

@PeterG I had read that Aziz Ansari gave his speaking time to his co-writer.

Also even in the #OscarSoWhite controversy it was always talked about the no African American people were nominated. I did some digging and the last time a Latin-American man won an Oscar for Best Lead Actor was Jose Ferrer in the 50's. Only one woman of Asian decent has been nominated for Best Lead Actress and that was Merle Oberon in 1935. Those are just a couple of examples. There's a lot of talk about much needed diversity but the diversity seems to be limited to 2 races. At least as far as movies are concerned. TV seems to be doing better. But there could always be improvement.
 
I watched it because there was nothing else on, and I mostly watch award shows for the dresses. :P I didn't know what most of those shows were (no Netflix, HBO type channels, don't watch internet TV), so I have no clue who those people or shows are unless they are on network TV. I have a vague passing knowledge of the popular ones because they are in everyday pop culture (like Game of Thrones, of course I have heard of it but no clue what its about). I think the only shows that were nominated that I watch were This Is Us and Better Call Saul. And what was the deal with that opening dance number? Why were there men dressed up like women in the red cloaks? Isn't that show about women? Can't think of the name of it, but I know the pop culture reference of the women in the red cloaks and white hats.
 
I will always use the Desperate Housewives as an example. When Alfre Woodard was hired, there was all of this, "Finally, a woman of colour on Lysteria Lane!!!" even though there was already Longoria. More diversity is great, but if Alfre was the original and Eva was the new season hire, there would not have been the same media response. Or see Friends when Gabrielle Union and Aisha Tyler were introduced, even though Ross dated Julie back in season 2.

Or The View when Star Jones left. Replacing her with another black woman was a given. The same thought was not given when finding a replacement for Lisa Ling. They replaced her with Hasslebleh.

I just have to share this because I know I'm not the only Trekkie on FSU. The new series, Star Trek: Discovery will debut Sunday, Sept. 24th 7:30 p.m. (Central), 8:30 p.m. (Eastern) on CBS.

From what I've read, the series will also be available on Netflix. The CBS App is also available at the Windows store. Also, all the Star Trek shows (Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, etc.) are available to watch with the CBS App. Just use the search feature with the App to find the episodes to watch.

From what I understand, the Premiere is the only episode that they plan to show on the CBS Network.
They intend to broadcast more "mature"/uncensored content on Netfix/All Access than "Standards and Practices" allows!

It costs $5.99 a month for CBS All Access. I wonder if Big Brother:Celebrity Edition will be All Access also.
 
Well, I'm going to wait and see about that. I'm going to check with my CBS app for the next few weeks to see if I can watch it on there. It's sort of like the Olympic Channel in my opinion. I can watch that on DirecTV, but watching it online in the beginning required DirecTV Now. That's not the case anymore and it can be watched online by signing into my DirecTV acct.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll be able to watch Star Trek: Discovery through the CBS App by signing in through my DirecTV acct. I may be wrong, but I'm still going to try it that way.

Well, shoot! I'm afraid you're right about this. I haven't used my CBS app recently, and I just discovered that a CBS All Access account is necessary in able to watch Star Trek: Discovery or any other shows, movies, etc.

I haven't used my app in about 6 months or so. That was when I was able to sign in using my DirecTV acct. and password. I'm definitely surprised that it's no longer the case. Well, I guess it's time for me to uninstall that app because I'm not paying $5.99 a month for CBS All Access.

They had a free trial period before they started charging.

However, I hadn't heard it was going to be on Netflix. We already get that. Not paying $5 a month for every single streaming service that is only one channel. That's crazy!

For the Trek fans in Canada, it is supposed to be airing on Space channel.
The trailer currently available on the website seems to indicate that one will be able to see both the premiere & the second episode on Sunday. http://www.space.ca/show/star-trek-...rek-discovery-september-24-at-8309mt/1212166/

It is also airing on Canada's CTV network, which is on all basic cable packages. That being the case, I am doubtful that there is any regulatory reason for CBS to restrict it to their streaming service, unless the Canadian version is going to be edited, which I think is highly unlikely. Imo it's just a CBS money-grab.
 
Previous years I only had CBS All Access so I could watch the Big Brother LIVE FEEDS. I would only keep it for 3 months during the summer, then cancel it until the following summer. But since Star Trek: Discovery and Big Brother Celebrity Edition will be All Access, I'm keeping the All Access subscription year round. (Last winter CBS had Big Brother: Over The Top on All Access too)

That's Netflix, Hulu and CBS All Access I pay monthly for. Along with DishNetwork satellite with HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and Starz. My TV entertainment has become expensive.

Well, I may lose my local CBS station (KSLA TV Channel 12) Monday, September 25th around 7 p.m. It seems that DirecTV isn't wanting to negotiate with CBS. I've called DirecTV, and they wouldn't give me a direct answer. Instead, they hemmed and hawed about it.

I did find this information on my local station and from KSLA.com. There are other ways to watch free online. I can go to KSLA.com to watch the news and weather live. Amazon Free TV and Roku TV are the other ways that the KSLA TV mentioned.

Sunday night, I will be able to watch Star Trek: Discovery on my local CBS channel 12, and that may be the last thing I get to watch thanks To DirecTV not wanting to negotiate. Starting Monday around 7 p.m., there may be a blackout of my local channel.

I wonder if this is another reason that CBS is now wanting to charge people $5.99 for CBS All Access. I know one thing I won't be paying anything for CBS All Access when my local CBS Channel is supposed to be included with DirecTV. Actually all my local channels like NBC 6, ABC 3, KMSS 33 Fox, LPB 24, The CW 21 and MNT 45 are included with DirecTV.
 
Did anyone get caught up in Salvation? I rue the day I ever decided to start watching. I so hope it will end soon. Yes, I keep watching.
 
I watched Zoo until the end. I liked it and was hoping for a nice cushy ending to wrap up the series. But instead I got all sorts of ridiculous cliff hangers that had me rolling my eyes. I RRRREALLY think it is time for this show to end.
