2017-2018 Program Music and Choreographers

I guess she can't skate to something dramatic

But she has in the past. Sotskova skated to Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet 2 years ago, which is the most dramatic/powerful of the R&Js. I actually thought she did well with it. I liked it much better than the lyrical stuff she has skated to since then.

As to Marin's tango--I like it. It's quite different from Karen's. More cool/precise, less fiery. It will be interesting to see them head-to-head at U.S. Classic. :)

I remember it and I think it was a weak program...

I love Karen's tango SP but it's much more difficult to pull off Marin's program in actuality IMO. There's more detail and range of expression in the choreography, and it doesn't have that huge booming music to help sell it. It has enormous potential IMO, and she moves beautifully and understands the music in an impressive way for her age. She already skates with maturity, I think it's really nice work for her.

I like that Karen is being compared to Marin though, it's a really good sign for the US ladies fans. I think that Marin has stronger material (overall) than Karen.

In my opinion she only has a better dress.

I mean... Marin Honda every time she waves both of her hands meaninglessly... like how many time she has done that over all of her programs? That is not even near 5% of a tango program.

I mean, I can tell you're not really a Marin Honda fan in general. I'm more sold on her than Karen personally. There's much more range between both programs and I think she has better quality of movement (and richer skating). Karen's music choice is going to work wonders for her in the SP, the impact it has will make her stand out (in any field) with a clean performance. People already love it!

Not sure I see tons of tango in Karen's program either, extremely well placed elements and highlights absolutely (and a great music edit), but it doesn't really bother me in her program either. We always have the Tango SD to look forward to in the coming years.

Max's Les Mis SP program really works well for him, he moves really well to it.

Less excited about his POTO FS music choice, but I hope he really brings it.

Max wins the off-season warhorse competition. ;) (That was the big unspoken surprise in the Mirai thread :HA!: :HA!: not Queen or Firebird!) but I think POTO could work with his skating. At least it's not The Lion King rapping.

The short is good, he's moving well I've just never cared for that song.

I haven't seen it yet, with Max getting good notices, I feel like we can add it to the list of American guys seriously bringing it this season. I hope they all skate well this season because even if they all can't make the Olympic/World team, everyone deserves to feel satisfied with things they can control.

Karen and Marin have different style tangos. But Marin's is more elaborate, interesting and has some authentic tango moves (except for the arm shacking). I also wonder if Karen saw the movie and the segment supported by this tango, and if she knows that the scene ends with rape....

I prefer Marin's as a tango and think there's room for real nuanced interpretation. However, I think Karen's SP has more potential to wow the crowd as a competitive program. Her's is less of a tango and more about aggressiveness and straight-up drama, which is appropriate for the music choice. I feel like she's more making a statement that American women can skate with speed, power, and glide which has been lacking from them for a while.

About Karen's interpretation, it's obvious she's not recreating the movie but using the music to show off a certain mood. It's not unlike what most skaters do. Plus, Yu Na Kim's SP to the same music certainly wasn't invoking the movie.

Yeah, I can't even muster the strength to channel Sasha Cohen (with a megaphone). :sasha1: "MARIA! :angryfireI fell asleep".

She really does have lovely lines though, and her back posture is kind of like heaven. Maybe it'll be pleasant.
I am the number one fan of lovely lines and posture around here and I fall asleep within seconds. :D

Max and the warhorses seem to be a good combination. POTO was also really great. I'm so up for this. Warhorse Max for the rest of time if it means we get programs this lovely. You can really see all the long hours of work on his movement, his turns, his steps, his spins, shining through in these two programs already, and it's only August.

Max is going for it! Make no mistake. It is a take-no-prisoners attitude. :kickass: :kickass: :kickass: It's his time! Do-or-die! :sekret: Max will continue to work very hard (with focused determination) to accomplish his goal of making the Olympic team. :cheer2:

Thinking about the past, the effort to repackage Max as a poet was a distraction He does relate to certain music. The job should have been to fix his skating quality so he could communicate his music better. Usually i hate these overdone-squared pieces. But, with improvements in his skating, more technical content and appropriate music I'm looking for higher scores.

They'll do anything to scare the pigeons of Trophee de France. :p this is my ice, I am a Swan, stay away and don't poop on me!

I actually like all of the Swan programs so far (Osmond).

It's like the coaches and choreographer think it's ok to make it her signature lol
IIRC her coaches have said she doesn't like super specific instructions for choreo or doesn't like to follow 100% of the choreographer's directions, so maybe it's just what she likes to do.

I'm wishing she were going back to Black Magic Woman.
I like that programme too!:respec:

Sotskova is actually a pretty cool performer and unique in low key way. Her costume lately getting a bit blah, but her music choices are often unique and quite interesting.

Her last (2016/17) seasons’ music was all Schnittke, both programmes. FS was to Gogol’s “Dead Souls”, “Visit to Manilovs” segment. I don’t think I’ve ever seen “Dead Souls” on ice before…. :D. But her costume killed the effect. She or her advisors made an understandable attempt to recreate a female dress of a small-town gentry http://www.wysotsky.com/0009/Images/381/016.jpg .. but she ended up looking like a Pink Chicken, instead of “Lizanjka Manilova”….

Her SP has a pretty cool subject as well; ISU info for some odd reason listed incorrectly the music as “Tale of Unknown Actor” which is a rather mediocre Soviet movie in the 70’s about an aging actor, which used the Schnittke's music piece for back ground. The true name of the piece is “Queste libere farfalle” (Those free/wild butterflies). I just wish her costume and choreo were more pronounced and had more punch.

My favorite season for her was 2013/14. Interesting music, Pina, Winter and Tango Nuevo, with unique choreography, and design of the costumes for all 3 was to die for!

First time I saw her in 2011 competition, she was the voidiest and punkiest in that whole bunch… :D

Does somebody recognize what music Takahashi/Shibata are skating to in their SP? Sounds kinda familiar, but I'm drawing a blank, and Google didn't solve the mystery to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rz2Ou-Ffhb0

Their FP is Cinema Paradiso. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_rHmJFzDS8

I am 85 - 90% sure the melody for SP is also a segment of music from Cinema Paradiso, just a less know or less pronounced part. Take a listen, maybe you'll find it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkk0tItcFjs

What is this competition? The arena looks like MegaBox Centre with a rink on the lower level, it's in Kowloong.... It's a party rink (so it seems to me) and not for intl events..... it's a place where you have 5 drinks and then go skating...... and if you jump as little as a double jump, everyone else who had a drink on all 4 floors hoorays outloud....... and bangs on the glass.....:D........ it's not even full size.... strange.
