So far, Ashley's free is the only one exciting me of all the ones I've read. I'm really waiting to see what The Chinese pair, French and Canadian dance teams as well as Fernandez are going to do.

Love Marin's skating, it's very pure with deep knees and clean, flowing edges. But why the F*CK would they pick this music?! Why, why, why! And some of the choreography is odd to me...doesn't match. Can't get over the woman singing it either. She's too intense for this light aria...needs something more intense! She did a damn Beetlejuice program, for god's sake.

What is her SP music? Did she reveal that yet?

The free "Turandot" is a program that was used free when Shizuka Arakawa won the gold medal at the Torino Olympics. "It's a famous song everyone knows, so I want to act like myself, I'd like to have a goal for Pyeongchang Olympic appearance."

David choreographed the LP and Buttle the SP.

Maybe Marin should revisit Turandot when she's older. I'm sure she'll improve as the season progresses, but I'm not sure she's really mature enough to really match what the music needs the way more successful skaters were when they did Turandot.

Give her a few months. Her expression going into her spiral on the (horrible) soprano's climactic high note was fabulous. Total props to her. She wants an Olympic medal and I won't be surprised if she gets one.

Unfortunately, she literally does cross overs for 7 seconds before that spiral. I am a huge fan of Marin and hopes she gets that medal, she is the most complete Japanese skater now that Mao has retired. Just after so many good Turandots this one doesn't even come close to the Sarah Hughes version....

I also wondered about that too because that is a good point. I don't know if the ice is the normal size and she may have been modifying things to fit in the rink. Jumps were great though!

Yeah, I'm not getting the hate either. Turandot was certainly not my first choice, but for July and an exhibition, she looks terrific. The program is in its beginning stage, but it has lots of nice moments and I could see it in seven months being memorable at an Olympics. For me, even in this exhibition Marin is far more interesting and dynamic to watch than Satoko.

I really try not to judge programs in July. I remember thinking Ashley Wagner's Black Swan was a skeleton of a program when she debuted it, but by 4CC/Worlds I loved it.

All I can say is I'm not worried about Marin. The program looks very good already ... if the jumps are there, it should score very well IMO. (She makes everything magic!)

I hope she will get rid of that ending pose as it's from Mao.
And I hope she should change the dress because it looks identical to Yuna Kim's Turandot.

Basically the whole program, each little detail is the program that Yuna would have skated in Korea if she would not be retired. Not impressed, although I suppose it will benefit her in an Olympic season and in Korea, where the public is so used to this style of skating.

It's still David Wilson as the choreographer after all. Personally even though I am not Yuna's fan, I still come back to watch Yuna's turandot after watching Marin's new LP. I know it's unfair to compare a 15 years old girl Marin to Yuna's last exhibition program but still... it kinda bugs me.
And that ending pose Mao has used many times. I can't stop feeling a bit annoyed.

@chapis @Meoima Okay, you guys made me go back and watch Yuna's Turandot to compare to Marin's. And yes you are right, Marin's costume is almost an exact copy of Yuna's! I wonder if it's a tribute, and if Yuna is one of Marin's idols? (Why would she not be, I suppose? )

That aside, I find the two programs different enough. I feel like it's not really fair to Marin to compare them. Marin is only 15, just starting in seniors; Yuna was 23, a two-time Olympic medalist, fully mature in her skating. They're like night and day, really.

I think Marin's program is good and should serve her well in competition. It's not exactly the music I would've chosen for her, but she interprets it quite well already, and it's only July. Marin has the ability to make every moment beautiful; and also to make many moments meaningful and interesting. The program will only improve from here.

I wouldn't be surprised if, after getting beaten by Zagitova's dramatic Don Quixote last year, Marin wanted something more powerful and dramatic this year.

Just curious: How many programs do choreographers typically do a season? Do they limit themselves to doing so many programs per season so as not to drain their creativity? *Should* they limit themselves?
