Confession: I have not seen "Black Swan", so I guess to redeem myself I will have to move this up to the top of my "Must Watch" list. :shuffle:

I actually really like the choreography in Mai Mihara's SP. :shuffle:

Yes, the expression has a long way to go (why is anyone expecting that in the first performance? She's so young and still has to grow into it! Rome wasn't built in a day). But she's still young and this program is much more mature, so I think she's going to grow into it. The sharpness/tension and staccato movement is there when it needs to be, and it's well choreographed and much more difficult than a lot of the other short programs. Choreography wise I really like it, but she needs to work on her eye contact and confidence, she's still working through her "shy phase" IMO (so it'll be a bit awkward at first). I was surprised that so many people pounced without taking this all into account. I mean duh, of course it's going to have a long way to go at the beginning of the season, as long as it's well choreographed is all that matters right now IMO.

I also really like Marin's program (but that has more to do with Marin's skating). It's about as generic of a program as you'll see, but it sure as heck will get the job done when the time comes. :D she skates with quality and picked a piece of music that will really resonate with people if she's clean.

Well, there's the worst-kept secret in skating. :D

At least I have new music to add to my playlist of "Favourite Skaters Are Skating To This This Season HURRY UP SEASON". :D

YASSSSSSSSS, grab your gold medal!!!!!

Awwww, bless. :)

This is one of those instances where they went with the OPPOSITE of what works naturally for her, and the opposite of what they should've done IMO. Her generic ice princess transformation is almost complete. I'm bored out of my mind with Osmond's music choices. Way to show your strengths artistically and bring something fresh and new to the table.

:violin: Complain, gripe, b!tch, moan, yadda yadda, mumble

Good luck beating Janny with that :D (or maybe a few others, like Daleman) ... I can see the swan-like splats on the crescendo of music already. :lynch: (ETA: https://youtu.be/ybFH4uqWIyU) Nope.:slinkaway I wish her well.

I'm not sure about Kaetlyn's choices either. I'm not a big fan of Summertime, :shuffle:, and I'm not convinced that "dramatic ballerina" will really show what I love about her most, which is her sassy charm. I am hoping, of course, that she will prove me wrong and not become what Karpenko fears as well, a generic ice princess. Because that would be boring and sad. Very sad.
In order to make Black Swan work, she needs total and complete commitment to OTT divatude. :glamor: :drama: :kickass:

This is Mirai's challenge, because Med can definitely infuse this music with her own brand of spritz.

Hmmm, well Med can certainly rotate and make OTT faces. I'll be interested to see if Med can meet the Chopin Nocturne challenge of maturing into a skater with less superficial histrionics and more emotional substance, eh. If Med can show a different side with Chopin sp, then perhaps for her fp she should go with something more in her mime-based histrionic ballpark from Sunset Blvd movie soundtrack (as I suggested awhile back): ;)

Anyway, no one will skate Chopin as well as Mao :glamor:

That settles everything! :D

Exactly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2xjUQWPsPY

But I'm glad that Mirai feels she has more she can work on and bring out with the Nocturne sp, as she indicated to Ted Flett, whilst also putting paid to the mini Med controversy. :D

I would love to see the right lady skate to Laura theme song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIWTqMoTUM8 I thought it would have worked beautifully for Alissa Czisny. It actually might fit Kaetlyn Osmond (maybe stretch her emotional range to show both dark and light sides) I'm not sure about Black Swan for Kaetlyn, but we shall see how it goes. Maybe she will surprise us with this music that's been done before? Or not.

@quartz, do you think Laura would be more interesting for Kaetlyn? BTW, some of the ending scenes in Black Swan (movie) were OTT ridiculous. The director was too heavy-handed. I didn't care for Natalie Portman's overly praised performance either. The soundtrack was good. The dancing by Portman's ballerina understudy was great, though she didn't receive title credit, in order to pump up the belief that Portman did all the dance scenes for her character.

What about selections from Vertigo soundtrack for a pairs team?

I agreed with you until I read @Aerobicidal's post about Med using Chopin to interpret Kate Chopin's "The Awakening" and now that's all I want to see.

I have no idea what Osmond has planned for this music.

But there's no need for skaters using music from Swan Lake necessarily to imitate ballerinas imitating swans.

They can just cut out the middlewoman and be skaters imitating swans directly, which are big aggressive birds on the land. And seem to glide on water more like skating than ballet bourrees, which is pretty much the closest ballerinas can come to gliding.

Or, of course, they can just use the music without referencing the story of the ballet source at all, as when Scott Hamilton used an excerpt in his freeskate.

Far easier to do as a male skater, though. Nobody cares about Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake.

That's true, but more my point is a female singles skater attempting Swan Lake is expected to reference the story in some way, costume, choreography and all. It's so iconic that it would be bizarre otherwise.

It’s up to you, but I would not bother.

It’s the worst movie that hit the Oscars circuit in a few decades. In spite of big name actors, relatively interesting montage with rather basic jump cuts, few lame attempts at hitchcockian suspense, all edited with 21st century film production technology, good costumes, etc., the Plot itself is barely worthy of a band of travelling pagliacci.

3 ballerinas and “Swan Lake”. The current Prima is injured. Next Prima-to-be is great but frigid and uptight, can handle the Odetta but not Odelia. Another Prima-wanna-be owns no panties and can handle Odelia. Then there is a bunch of catty girl fights and “in the back of the car high-school sex”. The uptight broad struggles, then goes nuts, then stabs the other and herself at the premier. Don’t waste your time and money.

Of course!
Tinami's description actually makes it sound like a lot of fun. :drama:
And do you really think I give a flip if Oscar liked it or not? ;)

.... :D and for comparison, if you have not yet, see these two movies, about "fatal ballerinas Swan Lake drama" and "many women in a struggle for the same job"...

I love Misha Ge.
I see an incredibly successful career for him in choreography.
But I wonder if doing it for his direct competition is wise.
Shouldn't he solely focus on his own skating?
Unless he retired and I missed it?

Here was Misha Ge's message to fans the day after his Grand Prix selection to RUS & FRA: https://www.instagram.com/p/BUmVrTlBCwU/
If he decides to retire, I'm sure he will let us all know.

ETA: IMO, Ge likely doesn't see any men for whom he choreographs as "direct competition" because he knows he can go to Olympics/Worlds as long as he wants to/is healthy.

Oh, Med can pull off the mature artwork, no problem, she is so expessive and is growing every season, but will Averbukh let her do it:p:mitchell:
