This whole thing just looks so uncomfortable and awkward. So many teams. It gives me waiting for the school bus for return trip back after a field trip vibes.

With all due respect @Sylvia this person you are sharing ( while I don't doubt their credentials ) has a clear bias against FB/C that was evident prior to last nights competition. Many of their retweets clearly show this. They even retweeted someone who shared a video of FB/C falling in a lift with the caption "now do that in the FD please".....

I could go into detail about a few places where they contradict their conclusion that C/B were correctly scored and FB/C were overscored but I am going to leave it here for the time being.

I will maybe later as it's nearing midnight here and I am not sure this is the thread to do that in?

But I do think we should all be a bit more prudent in what we share because while I didn't have to do a deep dive to see the tweet about the fall and a lot of others they did yesterday most people still only read the headlines and won't look past their conclusion that C/B were scored correctly while FB/C were overscored due to judges bias. Which I think you would agree ( once you scroll down a bit further ) that is a bit rich considering how they really feel about FB/C ;)
 
Want to know why the US got 2nd instead of 1st on the Rhythm Dance? Comes down to one step. Look at the linked video for Chock & Bates. Skip to 2:11 where they do a step where the guy is on two feet and the girl steps over the guy’s leg. It is step 29 from the pattern dance Tango Romantica.

Chock & Bates take this on a flat (straight line) instead of a deeply curved edge. Bates should have been leaning hard to his left. He wasn’t.

For reference, look at my own performance of the pattern dance Tango Romantica at 1996 US Nationals. (Link below) Skip to 1:32 and 2:23. We did it twice back in the day, making it a pattern. Note how I am leaning HARD to my left to make it curve rather than go straight.

This seems to be the point and the step that made a half point difference between 1st and 2nd on the Rhythm Dance and possibly the difference between Gold and Silver. Don’t get me wrong. Chock & Bates are the better dancers and it would have been an easy fix. The real question should be why didn’t their coaches see this earlier? Why did the judges wait until the end of the season to take issue with this? Chock & Bates did what they trained. Did they train with a Silver medal performance in mind. Don’t think so.

About 30 minutes ago I got a text from a friend with a link to an article in the New York Post about the Great French Judge Controversy. He asked what I thought. I told him that under 6.0 in SLC, all of the judges ordinals counted, while under IJS, the high and the low scored were dumped for each element.

False equivalence averted, one casual fan at a time.
 
This season in general seemed like it had more teams bringing back old programs than is usually the case in ice dance, more in line with how skaters in other disciplines often bring back (or carry over) a hit program for the Olympic season.

I admit that Piper and Paul bringing back "Vincent" was a bit underwhelming to me when it was announced, but the end result does feel fitting to me. That really was the program that launched the most successful era of their career (and, to varying degrees, all of their subsequent free dances were modelled on the impact of, so you'd be safe in calling it their definitive program), but the only noteworthy medal they earned with it the first time around was a 4CC bronze (and even that was because Hubbell & Donohue screwed up). Now it's their Olympic medal program.
 
Considering that many skaters choose a type/style of program for their FD that is different from their RD, having three years of decades and the same-ish types of music made it easier to teams to repeat their FD's, since the contrast tended to work across decades.

I think we would have seen fewer repeats if three years ago the RD was the '80's, last year was Tango, and this year was Waltz.

Fortunately, not all of them are like that. I'm loving the Italian Eurosport commentators. Especially the ID coach&choreographer with a take-no-prisoners style. lol

I confess, I was surprised with Simon Reed judgment though. After Fear&Gibson skated, he said: "It was flawed but it's going to be very close", with Guignard & Fabbri. I know Simon is generous with everyone and he isn't a specialist, but he has seen a lot of figure skating, for so many years, that he should've known it wasn't going to be close. But, more importantly, his colleague - who is an ex Ice dancer and it's her job to offer a professional opinion - was sitting right next to him and didn't say a word.

Uhmmm...I am not a technical expert on ice dance (or really anything), but I sure as heck don't see that -1 GOE on FB/C rotational lift. Maybe there is like very slight wobble when I watch that part over and over again, but nothing significant. All judges gave 4 or 5. While I agree that some judges gave them too high GOE from that twizzle, if none of them saw anything in RoLi, I think there probably was nothing to see.
 
That person just sounds like one of those Gen Z skating fans who spend their lives on skating subreddit and discord channels. The multiple “lol” and having to tell people they have a job made me realize the kind of fan that person was.

I think you mean Chris Howarth, not Simon Reed. Simon Reed lost his job a while back for saying inappropriate things on a hot mic.
