Thought this follow up on Jason/ Nathan photo from Nathan was adorable too.

Nathan Chen marvels at his haircut in throwback Jason Brown photo

http://olympics.nbcsports.com/2017/03/24/nathan-chen-jason-brown-photo/

"Given Brown is 22 years old and Chen is 17 years old, Brown’s Throwback Thursday post is likely circa 2007.

Chen’s flexibility at such a young age is impressive, but the skater found another aspect of the photo worth gushing over — his hair.

“This is amazing tho I can’t believe you found this,” Chen posted on Instagram. “OH MY GOD #BOWLCUT.”

Interesting. I never knew Uno pre-rotated his 4F. I don't think the judges penalize pre-rotations though, do they?
They don't. Many judges should have known about this. Even if they give full credit for the quads Shoma Uno does, they still should give less GOE compared to someone like Nathan.

They don't penalize Shoma. I don't think I have seen him do the 4F without pre-rotating it. He definitely should not be getting the same points as Nathan.

Excited for Nathan and his Coke sponsorship! Hope there are many more to follow!

My hope for Nathan this coming season is that he perfects his boot timing. Seemed to be OK last year right up until the worst possible moment for failure - Worlds. I wonder if the boot failure caught him by surprise, came on faster, because he trained harder than usual between 4CCs and Worlds? Just guessing ...

I hope that too. He said something about the pair of boots he had at worlds just didn't hold up as well as the others. So hopefully it was just this pair. Next year I hope he will have an extra pair already broken in case he needs them. And I hope he can quickly get passed whatever ankle issue those boots caused.

I've seen comments referencing an interview he gave, where he talks about not really looking beyond this upcoming Olympics. He has other plans in mind for example education and it seems, his eyes set on a professional career outside of skating without delaying his schooling. Can anyone come up with the source? It was from an interview he gave... ?

I think it's this one:
http://www.isu.org/en/single-and-pa...ws/2017/04/featured-interview-nathan-chen-usa

He doesn't say for sure. He says it depends on how his body holds up/how he does next season/school aspirations. His skating still has so much room to grow. It would be a a shame to see someone so talented quit so quickly.

Oh No. Obviously, Nathan will make whatever life choices are best for him, but the thought of him leaving competition stabs me through the heart.

Due to the technical demands of the sport and the consequences which can ensue because of them; among other factors, I don't believe that "long" competitive careers/multiple Olympic appearances will be so common in the future.

There's also this interview he gave with a Japanese media outlet after WTT where he talks about his plans post Olympics: (translated): https://twitter.com/Iron_Klaus/status/856842378203860992 and https://twitter.com/Iron_Klaus/status/856847127485591553

He basically says he'll probably go to 2022 but it's dependent on how he does next season. I think he's just realistic - it's unknown how long these young guys and their bodies can keep up with the technical demands they are doing. I'm wondering if his huge hip surgery last year made him a little bit more cautious about continuing long-term.

I think he's a great example of someone who is succeeding in skating not necessarily just because (or primarily because) of excellent involving skills which only apply to skating. To me, one of his core competencies is his mental game. His cool, competitive demeanor. That will serve him well in a lot of pursuits and I would imagine people like him (and for example, the Shibs) would frankly get bored or "sick of" the skating world after a point. You see this reflected in the way so many champions who finish competing, pretty much depart from the skating world entirely. At the risk of making an over generalization, this seems the case with smart North Americans who have core competencies which they see better opportunities to apply outside of skating.

These quads are demanding and dangerous. I do not blame him if he will not go to 2022.

Nathan just got Nike. Finally! He's been wearing Adidas gear in all his practices which are streamed globally! He even wore them in his profile photos. And they were never his sponsor.

Nike is a good fit. He's young and know for pushing the athletic limits.

Nathan just got Nike
Link? ETA: Thanks, @love skating, for posting the link to Nathan's Instagram below.

Article by Michelle Kennedy who spoke to Nathan before the Seattle Stars on Ice show this past weekend: http://www.centeredspin.com/nathanchenreadyforthespotlight/
Excerpt:
Even though Nathan enjoyed his time with Stars on Ice, he is also excited to move on to the Olympic season. He will only be taking a week off and is not planning on taking a vacation. Chen will slowly start training and plotting his programs for the season and by mid-June he plans to be in full training mode with his eye on the prize. When asked, Nathan was not shy about his goals for next season:
“Obviously, make the Olympic team to start with; coming out with another title at nationals would be great,” Nathan continued. “My focus is making the Olympic Team and just bringing myself back up to where I was and keep on pushing myself as much as I can this season in terms of the Grand Prix. Making the Grand Prix Final would be another goal, setting myself up with little goals leading up to the season.”

^^I really liked this interview. I love his confidence and that he welcomes the attention and expectations instead of being overwhelmed.

Nike is a great fit. I love seeing skaters get recognition for their hard work and accomplishments.

Nathan has one gorgeous lutz.

Wow, but will the judges ever call Shoma on his flutz?

Bonus: Austrian, Alois Lutz, invented the lutz jump, first performed in competition in 1913!

Speaking of Nathan... I just saw this on Twitter https://youtu.be/qzUv5fWz16Q ...

Hmmm, and will Shoma ever be called on his pre-rotated quad flip?
