I love this Xinjiang ID team skating to Indian music - peak inclusion/territorial claim propaganda.

TIAN Tonghe is a true talent. He now consecutively lands 4 clean programs in a season. Congrats on his WJC and WYO spot!

JIANG Zhiao is also pleasing to watch(coached by JIA Shuguang), nice SS.

Fun-fact: Chinese fans called Tian “little bee” because he wore a bee-liked custom in a competition.

I really do like Tonghe, but not sold on Zhiao.

BTW, I recently came across this boy again:

Who for me was the most promising junior - but I think he had a growth spurt and retired. Those are Jerermy Abbott-like steps, truly stunning to watch from a junior.

You should compile all the junior nicknames!

According to the selection criteria, skaters for Junior Worlds (sans pairs) and Youth Winter Olympics should be:

JWC: Tonghe Tian, Yudong Chen; Shiqi Gao, Ruotang Li; Yufei Lin / Zijian Gao
YOG: Tonghe Tian; Shiqi Gao; and Tong Liu / Quanshuo Ge if CHN ends up with a spot in dance

I think they qualified for the National Winter Games.

Gris, do you know what the criteria is for selection into the NWGs?
She posted a grid that was supposed to tally the points for qualification, which consisted of two national competitions and two international competitions. But it stopped getting updated.

Good for them!

Wasn't there a Hong Kong team that was trying to as well?

Skaters can earn points from 2 Inter-club Leagues, Nationals and 2 international assignments (GP/JGP) and the best 3 results will count. There are 18 spots for Junior Singles and 8 spots for Junior Dance. The official table hasn't been updated - a fan (komorebi-if) on Weibo has compiled a tentative list of the Junior NWG entries (unofficial):

ETA: I just checked and the table for Senior qualifications is up-to-date now.

Interesting that Yudong is skating entirely in juniors this season - for sure expected senior national events, at least. So I guess we should be expecting David and Juwen (or whoever does well at nationals as was the selection criteria) to appear at 4CC?

Also, why does Qihan have an English name? Is he someone who's switched?

See now Han Wenbao, somehow, is in senior NWG, even though he won bronze in junior nationals... (3rd highest in the men's table, second being Boyang and first being David)

@crzesk8dad posted in the competition thread that Qihan aka Jayden has been training in Irvine with Sean Rabbitt since early 2023 and I guess that's why he also goes by an English name?

Yihan Wang from Harbin is on the qualification list for Senior NWG and she just won the bronze medal in Novice Nationals

@Gris is there a well known reason as to why there are no Pairs in Junior NWG?

The ones who caught my eye for each discipline:

Women:
Tong Ruichen, An Xiangyi, Zhu Yi (Beverly), Chen Hongyi

Men:
Dai "Daiwei" (David), Jin Boyang, Han Wenbao, Xu Juwen, Jiang Zhiao since he's been talked about in seniors for some inexplicable reason again, Peng Zhiming

Pairs:
Peng Cheng/Wang Lei, Zhang Siyang/Yang Yongchao, Yang Yixi/Deng Shunyang, Wang Yuchen/Zhu Lei ETA: oh how could I forget :scream: currently in 8th

Ice Dance:
Chen Xizi/Xing Jianing, Shi Shang/Wu Nan, Wang Shiyue/Liu Xinyu

Does China actually get a spot in dance?

I think they do?

Junior Worlds: Priority given to skaters in the Top 50 on ISU Season's Ranking. The other entries for Men, Women and Dance will be selected based on the results of the Junior Nationals (Nov. 19-27), the other entries for Pairs will be selected based on the results of the Senior Nationals (Dec. 21-24).
Last season, IIRC Li/Wang didn't qualify for the FD, so I would guess there's only one spot.

3 Wenbao Han 204.56 SP FS
So I just watched him, and I feel like I wouldn't have minded him beating Yudong? Wenbao has a very drab SP, but gave a fantastic performance in the LP, and his Lutz is the best jump between the top 3. Yudong has the BV over him so I get why he beat him (barely!), but I wouldn't say there was much quality to him overall. Would have given Wenbao higher PCS than him at least.

Good to see Shiqi being the top junior girl! I think her jumps really need some work though... It's strange to see some of the Chinese girls not being good jumpers, because that's always been THE thing for Chinese singles skaters, and I hope they can work with some of those fantastic jump coaches in the future.

So now I'm curious which of Li/Wang and Lin/Gao will go, because both have tech mins ? I didn't watch the skating, so don't know if the placement's fair for me or not, but I do think Li/Wang are the better team...

I believe Lin/Gao will go because they have better ranking and placed 1st at this competition. I believe it's a one shot thing this year. They will only look at this one competition.

The official ranking has been updated - the table compiled by komorebi-if on Weibo is mostly correct except that the last place qualifier in Junior Men should be Yingchun Guo.

I found this little "famous people!" interview/article about Yang Yongchao and Zhang Siyang in a Chinese learner's magazine: https://photos.app.goo.gl/YQytNDRMAW6XQT3Q6

I'm not a Chinese learner, though, so I have no idea what it says!

The text in the purple block says: “Siyang Zhang and Yongchao Yang are two famous pair skaters who won the gold medal at 2022-23 Chinese Nationals.”

The dialogue below:

Q: Do you train every day?
Yongchao: We train for many hours a day. We’re very busy.

Q: Siyang, what do you do in your free time?
Siyang: We like reading, swimming and playing badminton.

Q: Let’s talk about the history of winter sports in China!
Yongchao: Winter sports have had a long history in China. The first pair of skates appeared in 1745 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong.

Great find!

Good result for Jin. The protocols also show he can do well with just one or two quads and focuses on going clean.
