2023-24 ISU Grand Prix Assignments & projected alternates

What a shame. Here’s wishing him a quick and full recovery.

And no substitution required at this late stage which is alway especially disappointing with the small pairs fields (well, I guess they still could, but Gamez/Korovin is the only NA based team on the list and their early season has been painful even before they got ill).

I would not mind seeing Lucrezia and Matteo they are there already going to be in Vancouver so maybe they could do back to back North America
Yeaaaahhh.

Pairs Alternates list is looking pretty slim and Beccari/Guarise are a cut above the field. Obviously, the Osipova/Epstein (2nd best option), CalMag and the Mokhovs aren't eligible for selection.

Pairs 1-10
Roscher/Schuster (SCI)
Osipova/Epstein (SkAm)
Beccari/Guarise (SCI)
Caldara/Maglio (SkAm)
Mokhova/Mokhov (CoC)
Zhang/Yang (CoC)
Vouillamoz/Giniaux (France)
Valesi/Piazza (France)
Vaipan-Law/Digby
Gamez/Korovin

Pairs 11-12
Piegad/Strekalin (GPdF)
Simioli/Zarbo

Do we think they're doing what they did last year, and adding teams that achieve the GP minimum on the Challenger circuit to the alternate list without them having to win a CS? Obviously any teams like that added wouldn't be in the top ten, so probably not relevant for this (although they're often more flexible when it's close before the comp), but I was wondering given how slim the list is, like you said. I think we'd have ~8 teams to add to the alts if they were doing that.

My guess would be yes. I have them on my GP Alternates spreadsheet at home on the laptop.

Going off the SB list, alts would be added to the bottom in the following order -

Proft/Nadeau
Liu/Nagy
Vaananen/Clerici (GP Espoo)
Holichenko/Darenskiy
Martins/Bedard
Schaller/Mayr
Derenisky/Eberl
Kucianova/Bidar

*Faula/Belle (GPdF host spot, but total score min too low for alts)

Any other teams do not meet the Total score minimum, had it from last season or are skating exclusively junior.

Simioli/Zarbo haven't competed yet this fall and we know GamKor are coming back from one of them having Covid.

Roman Sadovsky is out of Skate Canada.
Men's grid updated today, Oct. 13 (eta that Roman WD from this weekend's Skate Ontario Sectional Series October): https://www.isu.org/docman-document...23-24/grand-prix-4/entries-8/31415-men-4/file
Martins/Bedard have replaced Hanns/Neudecker at Skate America:
Ditto for the Pairs (Miura/Kihara's names crossed out): https://www.isu.org/docman-document...-24/grand-prix-4/entries-8/31417-pairs-4/file

Xu's name is not familiar to me so I did a search - he finished 3rd in Senior Men at the Inter-club League Final, as posted on Sept. 15 in the Chinese domestic competitions thread in Kiss & Cry:
Senior Men SP ... 4 Juwen Xu 57.76 Video

Senior Men FS ... 3 Juwen Xu 118.53

Final
1 Wenbao Han 202.35
2 Zhiming Peng 193.47
3 Juwen Xu 176.29

I guess Gogolev will just fill the spot and do back-to-back weeks.
I'd guess Gogolev too. He's had the best CS result so far this season and it makes more sense than maybe any othe guy except Rakic.

GBR are listed in the updated Skate America pairs entries :) with Martins/Bedard: https://results.isu.org/events/gpusa2023_Pairs.htm
Not surprised that Martins/Bedard replaced Hanns/Neudecker. Bummed the USFS went with VLDigs over BecGuar, but, yes, plus size is they filled the empty spots.

Okay, now that I have my laptop - a bit of tidying up the Alternates lists. As a reminder, once a skater/team on the Alts list who is waiting for a 2nd assignment WDs from their initial assignment, they're off the Alts list entirely.

I'm also removing any SB skaters from the USFS or KSF who have yet to compete in any domestic comps or senior Bs - seems safe to presume they won't be invited to a GP (don't come for me, Gracie fans), same goes for the lower level dance teams from ITA, ARM & KAZ.
Current vacant spots - 1 SCI man host spot (probably Gogolev?)

Potential vacant spots - 1 GPdF & NHK man (Grassl potential doping violation) - FRA & JPN maxed out at GPdF, JPN maxed out at NHK; 1 NHK pairs (MiuKih WD due to injury from SkAm); 1 NHK dance (KoKo have yet to compete this season)

Why are Davis & Smolkin ineligible for the Grand Prix series?

Will they be ineligible for Euros and Worlds also?

They weren't eligible for the Grand Prix because they weren't on the season bests list, or ISU rankings. This does not impact their ability to compete at either Worlds, or Euros if they are named by the Georgian figure skating association.

I think their status will change on Sunday. :shuffle:

They'll wind up at the bottom of the Alts List.

Probably, but whether any of the feds would take them as a sub is another thing
I really can't see any fed adding them ahead of pretty much any other team in the Top 10. If USFS wasn't willing to fly in BecGuar for a 2nd spot in pairs, there's no way any other host fed except MAYBE the CFSF or JSF are going to a team that could challenge one of their mid-tier teams.
