U.S. Ice Dance 2023-24 news & updates

With a large weekend of ice dance, the Solo Dance field was very competitive! In Senior it came down to less than a point separating U.S. Senior Champions Brooke Tufts and Lucas Appel. After the Rhythm Dance, Tufts lead over Lucas by 0.94 points. Tufts scored a new season's best after the Rhythm Dance (70.00) while Appel (69.04) scored just under what he scored a month ago at the Paradise Coast Classic. Then in the Free Dance, Appel scored a 103.94 for a total of 172.98 points and pulled up from second place to win the event. Lucas and Brooke earned the highest total scores of the entire competition! Very impressive rivalry for the Solo Dance circuit. Lucas earned a 177.81 in the Florida competition a month ago, but a very solid score and sheet for his Free Dance. Tufts scored a 99.47 for the Free Dance and a 169.47, which is a new seasons best for her. I am excited to see them go head to head again at Lake Placid in a few weeks!

I'm a little perplexed why USFS is sending its top 2 returning junior world teams to the same JGP when it could have made each team the anchor team at a different event accompanied by a newer team. Granted, H/S were third at nationals behind N/M and Carhart/Horovyi and they were beaten by the Peals at Dallas Classic so maybe USFS doesn't consider them second-best. But still, all four of those teams could've been sent to a different first assignment.

My guess is that travel plans were maybe made earlier than usual for Bangkok due to the cost and extra length of travel time, so they went with some more experienced teams that they knew would be ready early.
 
Starr is a college student (Brandeis) so I'm guessing they wanted to have at least one of their JGP's before his semester starts.

For Neset/Markelov, maybe they wanted to avoid visa complications for him, as Russians don't need visas for Thailand.

Ah yes, I had already forgotten that Neset/Markelov only made it to one JGP last year. IIRC, they were supposed to go somewhere that changed their visa requirements just a week or two before the competition?

They were supposed to go to Armenia and that got cancelled. The only remaining events were the two in Poland and Italy (where they did compete) and from what I understand Poland isn't admitting Russians at all, even if they have Schengen visas. https://www.rferl.org/a/poland-baltics-entry-ban-russians-eu-visas/32040504.html

ETA: I was still very surprised to see these two teams at the same event and would have thought USFS could have come up with a better plan to suit their top teams' needs and wishes (for example Markelov wouldn't need a visa for Turkey or Armenia either and he competed in Hungary last year) but I'm just a fan guessing at the situation :)

Regarding the decision to assign both Neset/Markelov and Hauer/Starr to Bangkok - strategically, it makes sense, IMO. There was always going to be a very strong chance that both US teams assigned to this JGP would medal because, with the exception of France and Canada, most other countries with top teams (Germany, Cyprus, Israel) weren't going to spend the $$ to send those teams to Thailand vs Europe for their JGP assignments. Nabbing a medal here will put Hauer/Starr in a stronger position to earn a JGPF spot if they can manage a win at their 2nd JGP - gold/bronze will trump silver/silver.

Additionally, while Hauer/Starr did beat Carhart/Horovyi at Jr Worlds last year, CarHor did beat them at Nationals, and I think the two teams are about even with each other.

It's going to be interesting to see who the USFS assigns to Linz - those assignments were due yesterday.

It seems bizarre to me that USFS signed up & apparently confirmed our 1 & 2 from Junior Worlds to the same event. We never do this & the reason is obvious as a #3 placement here could potentially ruin the JGPF chances of a team that could possibly make the Final.

I did figure USFS would have to pencil in 2 of the top 4 ranked U.S. teams to Bangkok. They need to send two out of the top eight & with at least three new teams in the mix, none of which were on the ISP early enough to make Bangkok's sub list, it's unclear which teams will fill out the top 8. USFS was always likely to initially name two teams for Bangkok that should finish the preseason safely top 8.

This, combined with varying results for teams #2-#4 from last season mixed with the Dallas Open results, does make things a bit sticky.

I see the point of wanting to give the athletes knowledge of where they are going to compete well in advance. This year, though, I'd have waited to confirm the second team until after Lake Placid.

Sending Neset & Markelov to Bangkok makes good sense.

It's the second berth that's a question mark.

That's presuming they finish 3rd and, to be honest, I think the #2 US team here, in this case, Hauer/Starr, has a decent shot of pulling an upset and winning silver ahead of Fradji/Forneaux.

I don't agree, though, that 3rd here could potentially ruin the JGPF chances for any of these teams, provided that team can win at their 2nd JGP. Apart from the off-chance of winding up at the same event as Grimm/Savitskiy or Fradji/Forneaux, I think the #2 US team here in Bangkok is going to be in a really strong position to win their 2nd JGP. Presuming that Germany sends GrimSav to Linz for JGP #2, one has to assume that everyone else is vying for silver & bronze there too - and by everyone else I mean Pidgaina/Koval, both US teams, Kudryatseva/Karankevich, the French, and maybe Tkachenko/Kiliakov if they do the JGP this season. I'd rather be the US #2 in Bangkok than the US #1/2 in Linz, to be honest.

I do wonder if this was the original plan or whether they expected one of the subs to replace them. Of the list of subs available for this event:

Bland/Sperry: to my knowledge, they haven't competed yet this season. They would have been an ideal pick otherwise: an experienced JGP team, but not one of the top 4 teams
Carhart/Horvyi: same problem as assigning Hauer/Starr with N/M
Epps/Gilman: underperformed at Dallas Classic, not currently in top 7 junior dance teams
Ilin/Cain: underperformed at Dallas Classic, not currently in top 7 junior dance teams. If they had beaten the new ISP additions at Dallas Classic, they would have been a good choice. But you can't choose them for a spot before Lavrova/Rogers, Pederson/Chen, or the Mullens at this point in the season. Perhaps, there will be a reshuffling of the teams after Lake Placid and Silicon Valley Open.
Peal/Peal: same problem as assigning Hauer/Starr with N/M

Looking over the JGP Bangkok roster again, it does look like Hauer/Starr's bronze to lose as the rest of the field is really inexperienced. But I think winning a silver at this event would be a lot harder than Linz where, yes, there's potentially a lot of good teams who are fairly evenly matched in skill and reputation, but not 2 of the top 6 teams from Worlds and the #1s from both their powerful federations. If I were Hauer/Starr, I'd like the Linz odds better, especially since they defeated Kudryatseva/Karankevich (at Junior Worlds), Tkachenko/Kiliakov (at Junior worlds and on JGP), Pidgaina/Koval (on JGP) last season and they haven't beaten Fradji/Forneaux or Neset/Markelov.
 
I don’t think qualifying at the final has as much impact on results later on the season, like it used to.take for instance, N/M beat the French at jr world even though the French made it to the jgp final. So I am fine either way
