Gymnastic news #22 - Tokyo or bust

I love that we all seem to accept that Yul is great and deserves to go but his hb is the worst. Honestly they should just let him scratch hb at this point.

With almost all the numbers in, I think it's Yoder's spot. Dyer is behind two others on floor that are definitely on the team, and he's behind Sam too. That leaves vault, which you could make the argument for Whittenburg if anything (who also has a second event in top 3).

Diab's rings numbers are good, but Yoder's the one with the biggest medal potential most likely.

Yul isn't gonna do HB in the finals so he's fine. AND NOW HE'S OFFICIALLY GOING TO THE OLYMPICS!!!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

So we know Brody and Yul are locks....we also seem to agree that Shane is a lock too. WTH are they gonna do with that fourth spot now?!

Floor:
Sam, Brody, Yul / Brandon, Shane

Pommel:
Yul, Brody, [Cameron], Brandon / Shane, Sam

Rings:
Brody, Yul, Shane / Brandon, Sam

Vault:
Shane, Brody, Yul / Brandon, Sam

P Bars:
Yul, Brody, Shane, [Cameron]/ Brandon, Sam

H Bar:
Brody, Sam, Shane [Cameron]/ Brandon, Yul

Brody's obviously going, Yul's obviously going.

Tim thinks Shane's in danger but I don't - he's still among the top 3 in 4 events.

Sam being top 2 in two other events is probably more than enough.

Cameron makes more of a case than Brandon.

Right now does the US have a realistic shot at bronze in Tokyo? Or no?

With the 3 up, 3 count in the team finals, anything can and usually does happen there so it's not unrealistic. Does anyone know how the other teams around the world have shaken out with the 4 team member thing?

With Arthur being injured (still crying as he’s my fav by far) and not doing the AA, I think Russia will be a bit of a wildcard in the team event. I still expect them to medal though…. a LOT will have to go right for them/mistakes from others for the US team to medal.

Sam finished 4th, so I feel like he earned his spot. Unless people think he was overscored. I'm not in teknik enough on men's gymnastics to know.

Oh gosh, that one is still hurting my heart too. I LOVE Arthur and am still bummed out about that situation. :fragile:

Since only three compete and three scores count on each event, it's not always the best decision by default. But since Sam has the highest floor and second highest high bar, he has the most to offer of the people still fighting for spots (especially since Yul will definitely not want his score counted on high bar AND Shane is basically a for-sure and likely won't compete floor).

Sam's a question mark on everything and Shane's pommel makes Cameron a very outside shot, but I still think it'll be the actual top 4.

The thing is - Mikulak has a horrible history of choking in team finals and individually as well. I think he’s done it at every Olympics and Worlds he’s competed at.

What if the U.S. men somehow ends
up with an chance at a team medal - and Sam chokes AGAIN?! If it’s the younger guys, I wouldn’t be as bothered because it would be a learning experience. And let me repeat: Paris is only THREE years away.

So nerve-racking waiting for the announcement! I'm so happy for Yul though - big fan here. And I've fallen for Stephen N., such a great personality and attitude! See we have good pommel guys in the US but I guess they tend to always be specialists!
