I was very angry as well. He's my favorite character along with
his brother Thor, I love their special yet messed up bond
and I fear this is definitely over for this one, even the dialogue insists on no coming back :wuzrobbed

I am afraid I agree with this. :( But then again does anyone truly die in comic books?!

I saw Death of Stalin last week. Wow. It is the blackest of black comedies, but it really works. There are times you laugh, but think "should I really be laughing at this?". I majored in Russian/Soviet history back in university, and it's surprisingly accurate, although obviously not completely so (time compression for one thing). Great performances too- glad that they didn't try fake Russian accents. And the horror of living at a time of brutal suppression, where nobody can really trust anyone comes across really well.

I couldn't find a trailer for The Last Great Wilderness, a British drama from 2002. Which is interesting, because the movie sort of defies categorizing. The cover of the DVD and the write-up on the back which mentions a supernatural element to the story intrigues me. So I thought I'd give it a shot and it was an enjoyable watch. The movie starts off as a bit of an action/thriller type of movie and then has moments of personal drama, comedy, supernatural, romance, crime drama...a little bit of everything. And it moves through all of this with a real, natural ease. Nobody famous is in it, at least I didn't recognize anyone. But it's worth looking for if you like a smaller budget movie which simply does it's own thing! :)

I forgot to post last weekend about seeing I Can Only Imagine. Now normally, Christian dramas are not my thing, but I've always loved this song, so I thought this might be a good movie. Plus Dennis Quaid and Cloris Leachman were in the cast and I like both of them. I ended up enjoying it quite a bit more than I expected. While there are a few moments of the "aw shucks" Christian moments, those are actually really limited and most of the movie is just a heartfelt, touching drama. Bring yer hankies...I wasn't the only person in the theatre sniffling and getting out some Kleenex. The lead actor, J. Michael Finley, is a good actor and an AMAZING singer. Apparently I'm not the only person who liked the movie. Accoridng to wikipedia, "it is the third-highest grossing music biopic of all-time in the United States, behind Straight Outta Compton and Walk the Line". Four out of four hankies. :)

^^^ Brokeback Mountain depressing? Call Me By Your Name depressing?

Man the more I think of it all of our material including MOONLIGHT is down right f'ing depressing.

So was Love Simon to some degree. uggggg.

And The Imitation Game, Milk, I Am Michael, Boys Dont Cry, Monster, The Crying Game.... I should be a screenwriter....

If I didn't post something about this a while back...I meant to! Honestly, when was the last time there was a major film release of two happy gay people?

I saw I feel pretty. The writing was pretty good - in recent years comedy writers didn’t bother to make things “fit together” and these writers did. I’m not super in love with Amy Schumer but I liked the movie. There were more funny parts than just what the previews showed and it had an uplifting message. One of the things my SO laments with Hollywood movies is that they give the message that only great looking people can fall in love or be successful, and this one has a broader message than that.

And Michele Williams was fun in her role.

I saw Rampage the other day. Very good action/monster movie. Surprised to see
Joe Manganiello's character killed off so quickly.
Disappointed to find that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is basically playing himself in every project, he's basically the same in this as he is in The Walking Dead and was on The Good Wife. He's just playing himself at level five in Rampage, at level two in The Good Wife and level ten in The Walking Dead. Morgan's performance was the only negative for Rampage. A minor one, luckily.

I watched A Letter To Three Wives (1949) recently. I think as I was watching it was a movie I had seen long, long ago, but I was enjoying it so much that I knew I'd continue to watch it all over again. It's interesting to re-watch a movie a couple of decades after seeing it originally. This one is a very strong movie, great script. Joseph L. Mankiewicz is the writer and director, for which he won two Oscars for both his jobs. Very well deserved. The movie was also nominated for best picture, but lost to All The King's Men. No one in the cast received an acting nomination, I would say Linda Darnell gave the best performance. There's a good biography on Darnell as one of the DVD extras. Worth watching as Darnell died due to burns from a house fire at the age of 41 (when it seemed she was about to make a comeback in the movies). Kirk Douglas has a supporting role in this movie and he's never looked more handsome. :D

Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story was on PBS last night. AMAZING movie about an AMAZING woman. I can't recommend this movie enough. About a third of the movie is about her youth and movie career, but most of the movie is about all the ideas she had (many given freely to other people) and the later years of her life.

Some of the inventions she was involved with:

- re-designing the wings of airplanes that Howard Hughes was working on which improved speed and overall performance

- creating a Coca-Cola cube which soldiers (and others) could drop into water to enjoy their favourite beverage more easily (the over-all project failed because she says she forgot to factor in how water can differ depending on the location)

- "frequency hopping" which would enable torpedoes for British ships to be undetected by German submarines (the U.S. navy rejected this idea as unworkable, not trying to understand beyond the simple introductory idea of the project)

- oversaw building of an Austrian-style complex in Aspen, realizing this area could (should) be a travel destination for skiing when all that existed there were less than a handful of stores. Later this complex (owned by someone else at that time) would bring in millions of dollars a year

- instructed plastic surgeons on how they could do their work for her differently, ideas they never thought of themselves...ideas which would later be requested by future clients who saw how well it had worked for Lamarr herself

- the "frequency hopping" project which Lamarr was involved in would eventually be used to create GPS, wi-fi and Bluetooth, which had an eventual market value of 30 billion. It would also be used for billion dollar military satellite projects as well as nuclear command and control messages. Due to Lamaar being unaware of patent rules and laws, she received zero dollars for her work, while living on 300 dollars a week in her later years

After the frequency hopping patent was rejected by the Navy, Lamarr worked selling war bonds for the WWII efforts. She raised 25 million dollars. The equivalent of that amount today would be over 340 million.

I've put the above information in spoiler tags in case any of you are planning to see this movie. I don't think reading this will spoil the movie because the information (Lamarr's whole story, actually) is presented so well that I think you'll find the movie very watchable even if you know all of this information. Now I am going to try to search out some old Hedy Lamaar movies. :D As for Bombshell....I can't recommend it enough. :kickass:

I didn't see a thread about the Cannes festival (might have not looked close enough mind you) but for those of you liking dance (thinking of you @PeterG ) keep an eye out for this one: Girl by Lukas Dhont (a Belgian/Flemish director)
It was not released yet but was presented in the section "un certain regard" of the festival. It deals with a teenager who wants to become a dancer but was born as a boy. Watching the trailer, I was already very curious but after hearing some critics during the festival and the young director, I can't wait.

Disobedience gets good enough performances from the leads (Rachel McAdams, Rachel Weisz, Alessandro Nivola), but the overall storyline doesn't really provide much backstory of Ronit's (Weisz) strained/estranged relationship with her (passing) father, and little time is spent exploring the Orthodox Jewish community for which Ronit had rejected.

Interesting to note director Sebastian Leilo had been very busy over the past year with Oscar Best Foreign Winner A Fantastic Woman, and then this film

I saw Chappaquiddick on Sunday. Just read some of the other reviews here and agree. I think it was well made and was fascinating about the whole Kennedy machine at the time. Jason Clarke who I have now seen in quite a few things was excellent in the role. The first time I remember seeing him was as Wilson in The Great Gatsby. One of those good actors who can transform himself but kind of slips under the radar because the performance is not about him but the characters he is playing.

I saw Deadpool 2 today. I liked it, good action and a ton of memorable quips. One downside, though is that
there's real mixed messages about violence within the movie. Strange to see violence glorified in such a blinding way in light of all the school shootings we've been seeing.

The 2018 Cannes Film Festival Has Begun!
https://www.rogerebert.com/cannes/cannes-2018-video-2-the-2018-cannes-film-festival-has-begun

Robert Ebert article about the Cannes Film Festival, whose jury this year is being led by Cate Blanchett. The article mentions that Martin Scorses will receive the Golden Coach Award. And one of the films playing is by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who directed A Separation. His movie will star Javier Bardem and Penelpe Cruz.

I heard two things on the radio about this. One was that the female DJ's were hailing Kristen Stewart as a hero for taking her heels off to walk up a flight of stairs (at a premiere, I think). A few years ago, apparently some women were turned away from some events for wearing flats. It appears Stewart agreed to wear heels, but walking up the stairs was too much, so she removed them to walk up and then put them back on.

A bigger feminist story at Cannes, however:

82 women walk red carpet in Cannes film festival protest

Eighty-two women climbed the steps of the Palais des Festivals at the Cannes Film Festival in an unprecedented red carpet protest to press for improved gender equality in the film industry.

These 82 women represent the number of women whose films have shown at Cannes over it's seven decade history. In contrast, 1,866 films directed by men have played at Cannes. Women who took part in the protest included Salma Hayek, director Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Cate Blanchett, Kristen Stewart, director Ava DuVernay [A Wrinkle In Time] and Jane Fonda.

HOLY CRAPPPPP.......

My client at LionsGate sent me the trailer for this new Melissa McCarthy / adult puppet movie...

O-M-G... talk about ADULT CONTENT.....

Im no prude...but man.........

lol.. @Cachoo I see you just mentioned it before me.... how funny.

My client sent it to me on Sunday, and I watched it today... WOW......

Killshot is an amazing movie, full of twists and turns. I see that it was adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel. So no surprise that it has a good story. Diane Lane and Thomas Jane play a couple whose paths cross with a criminal (Mickey Rourke) and then need to go into a witness protection program. Joseph Gordon-Levitt steals the show though, playing a character unlike anything I've seen from him before. Some might find his performance too over the top, but I found it to be one full of fire, so he brings a lot of life to an already good movie. Rosario Dawson has a small role in this one as well.

OK I needed a laugh today so I watched the R rated "Happytime Murders" trailer. Oh my.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eks8LG72uo

I think I'm going to have to see this the night it is first in theatres. I remember seeing Borat in a full theatre and everybody was laughing so hard it was pretty much hysteria. There's something about seeing a comedy with a lot of people, it's like everybody just relaxes and the laughter just bursts out of you. I might have to buy some adult diapers to wear though!

That is a great idea. There is simply an electric atmosphere when you are in a crowded theater of folks who want to see the film as much as you do. Laughter is contagious. This film is a great idea...I hope the best bits were not in the preview. I laugh just thinking about it. (Also Maya Rudolph can make me laugh, cry, cheer, love her!)

Of course you would never see a scene like the last one because it would be slapped with an X rating (and frankly with humans it would be gross.) But with puppets....I suspect there is a lot of material that could be played for laughs and get an "R" rating. Someone is going to make a lot of money on this film and lots of other people are going to be hitting their foreheads wondering why they didn't think of it first. And Avenue Q has been out there for years....the raunchy puppet idea was there; add funny humans and see what happens. I'm game.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone took advantage of the puppet loophole years ago with Team America. They even purposefully had the sex scene be longer and more gratuitious in the first draft of the film, so they could appease the MPAA by cutting a bit and ultimately ensuring an R rating vs. NC17.

A couple of comments in addition to my To See additions in bold: Summer 1993 feels like a warm blanket on a winter day, but I just needed to see more story in the trailer to add it to my list. If anyone sees this, I definitely want to know if you recommend it. And The Misandrists trailer has a great line:
"Remember ladies, the quickest way to a man's heart is through his chest."

A Bollywood biopic of Malala Yousufzai is being shot in Kashmir. Title- Gul Makai. When Malala was blogging as a child, she used the pseudonym Gul Makai. To be released in June but exact date unknown. I can't post a link on ipad. I don't have computer access right now. I definitely want to see this but don't know if it will be shown in Phoenix, particularly with the summer blockbusters dominating all the theatres. My only hope is one theatre in Scottsdale.
