Will N/K be last Russian Olympic gold medalists in ice dance?!? I don’t think anyone ever expected they would be! But now there’s no other belief!

If the best performances always won at the Olympics, V/M would have been leading going into the FD in 2014...

They don't have time for major changes. I appreciate how ambitious and complex their choreography is, and believe they deserve more credit for pulling it off so seamlessly that most people don't even notice how much more complicated it is. I'm with Robin Cousins on this- I like how staccato the opening choreography is to match the music, how every detail is related to this specific music. All they can do is zero in on those step sequences and focus on getting the edges exact. There's not much else they can do if they go clean and the judges just prefer another's style.

I think the cleanest skate of the bronze medal contenders will get the bronze medal. That might be the most harrowing of all the skating events this Olympics.

At the moment, I'm sort of thinking the judges are leaning towards that sweep...
But will they do it and then continue to do it or will they reward a different style? Either because of backlash or just to keep things fresh.

I'm hoping to see a Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Australian or Spanish OGM in Ice Dance one day. It does not have to be North America and a couple countries from Europe.
Just realizing but : Russia (+ Soviet Union), Canada, USA, France and Great Britain hold all the OGM for Ice Dance. All of them except for Russia (+ Soviet Union) have only one.

I wonder if P/C, once they've won this and if they continue on to next season with a similar lyrical type FD, might start hearing things about their lack of versatility outside of a few threads on forums. It's their first senior quad right now so they've not necessarily had the time for experimentation, but I don't see them gliding to 2022 with no competition without a bit of pushback if they don't switch it up a bit sometime. Who knows? Their style certainly is the preferred one as this moment. H/D just seem to be on the rise and it's a question of whether they can make the most of the momentum.

Can dubreuil make smart/ Diaz world champions or medalists?

If P/C came under a lot of criticism for their 2018-2019 programs with dubreuil I think they would stay with her and demand a new program. It would be so dangerous to leave H/D as Dubreuils number one.

I can't see them leaving- they're Gadbois big success story and MF loves them. There were vague rumours a while about Romain, but I didn't take much stock in them.

It does not have to be now. It takes time to make a champion and you have to be quite steady from the beginning. There's a reason why the one who succeed are the one that never had another partner OR started together very young. And yes, that includes Bobrova/Soloviev.

I agree about p/c. Romain- You never know! Like with collapse of Zueva/Spiliband team. They will become the most successful ice dance coaches of all time so there will be money to have! Dubreuil about to become bigger than Tarasova. So dubreuil deputies will be in demand.

I believe Dubreuil can do it. Her top teams includes hubbell and Donahue. But with hubbell Donahue is that a case of people getting together after different partners at a young enough age that it didn’t matter that they had other partners.

Yes but Maddie and Zach are also extremely naturally talented. Not everyone is that talented, but they still had to find out how to manage to work together and find their ground as skaters together. Putting the 2 best skaters in the world is not going nowhere if it's not the case.
Dubreuil is a match to P/C and H/D, a big one even. But she did have Paul/Islam and it did not really work.
I keep repeating that but I want to see a Russian Team with her SO badly. Or... Weaver/Poje ? :D (Can't they do one program together see how it goes haha)

Russia is currently only country with no connections to Dubreuil in ice dance! If she faces backlash Russia is not affected at all! But obviously if her machine keeps going controlling ice dance then Russia should send s/s if they are healthy! Or s/a.

Weaver/Poje would be interesting. They could need Dubreuil to get their old status as world medalists and gpf winner contenders.

H/D are a special case and it’s all about having that coach to push you to that next level.

The only way I can see this happening is if two ex-pats teamed up to skate for another country. Like if Abachkina could convince Drozd to skate with her for France.
So you want to see Dubreuil work with Russians but that’s separate from Dubreuil working with a Russian team representing Russia. A ethnically Russian team representing France is not Russian because there is no consideration of Russian style. Could Dubreuil make the Russian style ijs friendly again?

Gadbois may be the "high flyer" of the moment, but we have seen how quickly the prevailing winds can shift in skating, especially ice dance. I hope we continue to see many different coaching teams/centers rather than a single dominant one. That would become boring real fast.

After she sweeps Olympic podium it would still be early in dubreuil’s dominance! How many Olympics did dubova, linkchuk, zazoui, zhulin or Tarasova win before their schools lost favor? And how many of those careers ended because of IJS or new views of IJS.

I think the odds are good. In the late 90's, it seemed like all the competitive athletes were with Dubova, Linichuk, Tarasova.

But now we have more names with top teams than that and even though many still have Russian/Soviet roots, they are training up coaches from other countries. And those secondary & younger coaches are training up teams from more countries still.

With so many of the younger coaches being from different countries and so many different nations represented by the teams training under them, the chances are good that some of them will go out on their own and share their expertise with more people still. You never know who will bring up the future top teams. The winds are always changing. But hopefully they are expanding along with the interest in the sport.

Better hold onto your hat. The IJS will change again after this season. Of course, no one knows what the changes will be yet, but typically they are more far-reaching after an Olympic quad. And lord knows what kind of politicking will go on behind the scenes among the federations to push through their agenda. Which leads me to a question: Will there be a change of leadership for figure skating at the ISU this quad?

You can say that again. Not so long ago Camerlengo and Krylova were the IT coaches. Not so much anymore.

I wonder what some proposals are. What could make Russia or non Dubreuil teams relevant again?

I think that’s because they couldn’t push Weaver Poje higher.

At first the harsh tech panel at the TE threw me for a loop, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. If the tech panel is just handing out 4s like candy, then the judging comes down more to subjective preference...and if there is a particular style or coaching center in vogue at the time, you'll see that rewarded. But if tech panel is actually doing their job correctly...and fairly...then rewards should go to the best skaters, regardless of style. I'd prefer this, because then hopefully you'd see lots of different styles being attempted, with hopefully lots of different coaching centers rewarded.

As long as the tech panel remains consistently strict for everyone, and GOEs aren't liberally awarded to elements with errors by the judges, then I'm all for it. I hate the sense that placements are sometimes being decided by stylistic preference tbh. That sort of thing is what people use to claim it's not a sport.
