U.S. Ladies [#19]: Do You Know the Way to San Jose?

Politics is one thing. 'Liking' racist tweets, anti-immigrant tweets, homophobic tweets etc. is something entirely on another level imo. I never rooted for her as I disliked her skating but this year I admired the strides that Hicks is trying to make towards improved presentation, etc. to go along with her powerful jumps. Now I dislike her as a person and I for sure won't be rooting for her to make the Olympic team.

Back OT I hope the U.S. ladies skate great at COC and NHK in the coming weeks. Good luck to Angela, and I dearly hope Ashley, Karen, Mirai, and Mariah all have worked out the kinks in their programs, and that all three will have great skates at their next respective GPs.

We must have a different interpretation, because I didn't see any such tweets. I'll be rooting for Courtney. She has improved a lot and seems like a nice girl who is getting a ridiculous amount of hate on Twitter. Nothing justifies that.

I wish all of the U.S. ladies good luck and hope they can gain some consistency.

A jump landed on a straight line is actually slightly overrotated. A jump should ideally land on an outside edge; edges curve. It should look like a ( or ) depending on landing foot. The foot is maybe 10% off from a straight line.

But, I get what you're driving at.

You can be at a total backwards outside edge... I’m in the business, I know the business :p

You didn't see them but I did. I can only imagine what the USOC would think of someone who has 'liked' such disgusting tweets but whatever. Each their own.

Everyone has a right to root for whom they want. And I don't want a racist supporter on the Olympic team. I'll be rooting for others to make it and I hope they do over her.

Never said you didn't have that right. I'm not rooting for a racist supporter either because Courtney is not one.

Well, USFS has plenty of conservatives in their front office, so I'd bet that they have people that agree with Courtney. Not that they'll say that because of the sponsor thing. If they get her to redact those likes or delete tweets about this, it will be due to $$$, not because they disagree.

Similarly, there are plenty of conservative athletes in all sports - more than most people realize. I'm sure the USOC doesn't care what she likes. Personally, I had many classmates in high school who were homophobic/transphobic and weren't scared to say it if asked, but they would still treat everyone equally regardless of sexual orientation. Therefore I find it completely possible that you would never know she thought this way if not for her tweets, and it's completely believable that she's still a very nice person. As long as she continues acting that way and not too many people go through her "likes" on twitter, it's forseeable that the USOC won't even notice, let alone care.

No they won't care that is true - unless she makes the team, the mainstream media somehow finds out and it gets blown up somehow - and of course sponsors don't like negative press.

I almost wish now I hadn't seen those tweets. But for sure I won't be rooting for her to make the team. I never disliked her but now I do.

So what I take from all of this is that Hicks=Mykayla Skinner. Although her skating is dynamic I can’t lie and say that doesn’t affect my support for her. Right now I’d be happy with a Wagner/?/? Team or Wagner/Chen/? Team. I think if Tennell makes top 4 at skate America then she stands a good chance at making the olympic team just based on what most of the other ladies underperforming in their 1st event so far

Per the tweets she 'liked' she is, as well as liking anti-immigrant, homophobic tweets and so on. But as I said, we all have the right to root for who we want.

Phil Hirsh and the not-so-mainstream Dave Lease are members here. They almost certainly read the U.S. Ladies threads. That should be enough.
:watch:

When there is no pressure on your back, it’s much easier to perform. Courtney’s good performance it’s pretty much that. She’s still have several lackluster competitions so far this season. If you want to look at a possible, look at Bradie instead.

Going by their respective tweets and/or 'likes' it would seem so. And it's a shame.

I think Bradie for sure is a sleeper. I mentioned over a month ago that with the scores she pulled (near 200 points IIRC) she's in definite contender territory. Doesn't she still have the highest U.S. ladies score overall in international events so far?

Well back on topic, I'm excited about Bradie too. When I get excited though it never seems to work out. She had the best performance of the U.S. ladies so far this season. Certainly she needs to work more on her presentation, but if her jumps are solid and not URed, that's a start. I'm eager to see how she does at Skate America.

Don't forget about Amber Glenn @ CoC. It will be a true test for her because she is up against some formidable competition, but if she can relax, skate w/ confidence and enjoy the event, she'll be right where she needs to be. Good luck, Amber! :cheer2:

She does! She’s been stellar since late May. Her consistency is impressive. She’s a Michelle Kwan 1996 makeover from being a major contender.

And she got her scores from an international panel not on U.S. soil! I'm eager to see if she keeps that up in to her next event/s! And of course, I hope that Mariah, Mirai, Karen and Ashley can step it up too as the season progresses! Ashley medalled of course but it's going to get tougher against the likes of Medvedeva!

It should. It’s Skate America. Her consistency with a home crowd should lead into good scores. I hope she gets Golden Spin as well so she can maximize her points for next season. She’s in good position for two spots next year.

I don't spend much time on Twitter and I find it difficult to navigate.

But I don't think it's fair to say Hicks is like Skinner, the gymnast. Mykayla (and her family) is OTT with her persecution complex regarding her scores and team selection.

I've never seen Hicks complain about her scores on Twitter or retweet comments about other skaters not deserving their selection for International events. Nor has she photoshopped a pic of the Olympic team, replacing the last skater selected with her own picture.

So....feel how you want to feel about her opinions as you know them, but saying she's like MyKayla Skinner? No way!

LOL

I think the reason the comparison was made was more due to the racist/homophobic tweets/retweets/and or 'likes' and other tweets with unsavory subjects by others that both have liked in their turn, more than the persecution complex. That is what Hicks has in common with Skinner. And it can't be denied because all you have to do is a search of her tweets or retweets or especially subjects that she's 'liked'. They're still there last time I looked. In any event, since Phil and Dave were mentioned as being around these forums I hope Hicks gets busy deleting all such likes, tweets and/or retweets. Of course, if others have already retweeted her tweets or likes, then there's nothing she can do about that. In fact a few users have already screencapped her questionable 'likes', etc. on Twitter for posterity. And from what I read upthread, at least one person betrayed her trust and posted her DM's. Maybe she won't make the Olympic team so the point would be moot as far as any possible negative media coverage.

Bradie is definitely this quad's sleeper if she can have a decent season. No doubt about it! Mariah and Courtney, for sure. Amber, too, despite being in the long(er) shot category than the aforementioned. However, she can still score some points with a solid skate. In an Oly year, anything could happen. Hopefully, it will! Time for new faces and new places.

#TeamNewbies?? :biggrinbo You never know...

ETA: I would be remiss if I failed to include Angela. Yes, of course, Angela. :)

Too tell you the truth I have mental list of all the ladies that I think could make a break through in the next quad. That includes; Bradie, Amber, Angela, Karen, Mariah, and Courtney. Then there are the ones that could make a come back like Polina and Gracie. Then there are talented juniors that I’m keeping a close eye on, which is very long list. So I’m never despairing about what happens after the current top skaters retire. Instead, I just look to the future and realize anything is possible.

One of the things I wish USAG had done, is talked her into deleting those tweets before they went viral. It was super embarrassing. She knew the criteria for the selection committee and knew how the team would be selected. It was very unclassy and unsportsmanlike. Considering the high level of performance and the high caliber of athletes, it was just unprofessional behavior.

This is why its so important that social media controlled. While people respect opposing views, there are limits that the public will tolerate. Courtney is a big long shot for the Olympics. I think why she’s not social media savvy, is because she still an underdog and her team probably doesn’t think it will be an issue. In fact, I doubt they know anything about it. But someone like Ashley doesn’t have that luxury.

Can someone please post links to what they find so offensive that Courtney liked or retweeted? I went on Twitter and couldn't find anything that would cause an uproar. I did see a few messages where she responded to people and they were all classy when those people were complete tools. I feel like some people are dragging her through the mud for no reason because she isn't anti-President of the United States. Shock and horror!! Why should she go through her social media and censor her ideas or ideas she likes?

I didn't realize Paramount was full Olympic size. I'd thought it was smaller (Maybe I'm thinking of another rink?). I did hear about the ice quality though (from someone that trains there full time). The ice there is apparently very soft and not well maintained, which makes you skate a lot slower and makes everything require more effort/energy. I'd heard a couple years back that they were going to redo it, but if they haven't redone it that may be why Ashley looks slow. Some of the skaters in LA train there on Sundays due to limited freestyle elsewhere, but idk if Ashley's in that group.
Personally, I like skating on soft and terrible ice because it makes everything much easier when I get to competition ice (and ups my stamina), but if you're not used it, your performance can be affected. I've seen some younger skaters throw fits because they felt like they did a bad job competing on soft ice.
Lol thats how i sort of felt after competing there , but didnt throw a literal fit. Spins on that ice were bad for me. I love East West Ice Palace and Toyota's surfaces

A skater's coaching team does not include being their babysitter - and they shouldn't have to be especially when the skater in question is an adult skater. Whatever a skater does in their own private life and personal time off the ice is their business... even if their coaches and fans of the sport do not like it. A coach and his/her team must know their limits, period. Oh, sure, a skater's team can try to micromanage and control everything... but these skaters are adults with opinions who are not necessarily catering to a forum's posters or seeking their approval. ;) Being an underdog has absolutely nothing to do with it, but thanks for the levity!

The thing I find problematic is that it takes some effort to look up tweets people like, which says to me that a person is actively trying to find reasons to dislike someone.
