From Russia with love [#28]: Autumn to Winter 2017

Ballets and operas are generally in other languages, and the synopses are describing settings, actions, and summaries to be able to follow the plot line, not commentary about philosophy or abstractions. Although there are exceptions: I wish I could find a link to Peter Sellars' synopsis for "Tristan und Isolde" for the production he did for Paris Opera in 2005, which still has me

Not just when it is in a foreign language; there are other reasons why audience may need a synopsis (not knowing the original culture, history or mythology behind a piece). Language is only one of many forms of conveying information. Usually performance pieces contain few other forms. It makes only that much more sense to have a synopsis for an abstract piece which has no language or setting or costumes, and deals only with "philosophy of the performer/artist/creator".

:D sounds like you're discriminating against artistic pieces based on "philosophy" vs. ones based a fairy-tale or a historic event....

Besides...... Medvedeva did not take out an advert..... she only answered a question what her piece is about in an interview, when asked. Don't ask..

Well...... if ballets and operas, with costumes, sets, and several other rather expressive story-telling elements, require a synopsis/libretto, then such synopsis for "plotless" abstract performance pieces, as well as for abstract art, can even further benefit the audience. An artist tells the audience "this is my vision of the given subject" and audience has an option to do their own comparison how well their understanding of the "subject" fits the artist's "expression of it".

besides... we are not talking (yet?) about how effective is the interpretation of the idea.... we're talking about a practice of giving a synopsis for an abstract piece... and it is something that is commonly practiced.

I agree. I've seen plenty of modern dance performances where a synopsis or explanation of the theme/story is given. I don't always like it, but I'm not going to criticize someone for doing it when it's common, as you said.

I don't have a problem with explanations per se as I think it can be helpful. I'm sure it totally helped the audience members for the Duchesnays though I also think the skating in of itself would have done just fine without the explanation. I have a problem when the choreography itself is so literal and leaves very little to the imagination. I think it's more of a taste issue. The actual explanations can be good or a nice compliment to the program or be utterly ridiculous, convoluted, and pretentious and self-important that it reads like a parody and makes the program look more ridiculous.

I like that Evgenia explain her programs because usually I don´t like them, and people who defend her try give an intellectual interpretation of the program and everyone are very conform, then Evgenia give her explanation and all people are like   :blah:

Olga Ermolina's interview with Julia Lipnitskaya on RFSF's website
http://www.fsrussia.ru/intervyu/312...rnuta-u-menya-novaya-zhizn-i-novye-plany.html
via Google translater (I tried to make it more or less readable):
Julia Lipnitskaya, Olympic champion in team event, gave the only interview to the FFKKR website after the official retirement, in which she summed up the dialogue with journalists on this topic. In an interview, the athlete debunked the myths that appeared about her in recent times, and talked about her further plans.

- Julia, how conscious was your decision to finish your career?

This time it was my 100% decision. I devoted this not one and two or three months, that is, I thought for a long time, weighed all the pros and cons. Believe me, I had enough time to think about everything, when I left for the clinic to be treated and stayed there for a long time in winter. It was unrealistically hard to come to a decision to finish a sports career. Seriously, every day I fell asleep and woke up with one thought of what will happen. While staying in the clinic, we worked very hard with psychologists, and they helped me to find life priorities that concerned health, for example. I had to seriously think about many questions, because I was sure that I would recover and return to figure skating. In this I was sure, and everyone was sure! Mom, coach, everything ...

After the first week of staying in the clinic in Israel, where I was treated, on one of the days off, my phone was stolen and, consequently, the whole connection with the world was cut off. It turned out completely by accident, as a result of which I did not appear on social networks for a long time. And only now I understand why this was given to me. So I really thought about what's going on in my life. This played a very important role. Yes, I had the opportunity to go and buy a new phone, but I decided that if it happened, then it's necessary. In fact, I was in another country where everyone was speaking a different language, not even English, without any connection with the world. I knew only my mother's number. Then I bought myself a cheap phone just to call my mother and other relatives. And that's all. Therefore, this time than I was still engaged, as soon as my health and think what I will do after leaving the clinic.

- What scared you the most?

- Obscurity. The most terrible thing for me was to understand what will be next? I'm leaving the clinic and what? Especially when I started to realize that 99, 9% I will finish my career. And then I started to panic from this obscurity, what will happen? It was just a nightmare! And when I returned home, I sat for the first week and thought: and then, but how to start, and what to do? Obscurity is a terrible thing.

I talked to my mother immediately, she understood me. Together we decided that new life means a new life. Accordingly, we must go to the Federation, notify everyone, explain the situation, tell why it happened, so I did all of this. And then there was an agreement with the leadership of the federation that we all are waiting for September and after the test skates we will make an official announcement that I have completed my career. And that's all. Therefore, I want to thank my fans and not only the fans for their understanding and expectation.

- During that meeting, the leaders of the federation suggested that you will once again think about everything, so that you make a final balanced decision, because strong athletes of the top level are not scattered.

- Of course, in April I was asked whether it was an emotional and not spontaneous decision. But it is impossible to think and decide for so long on emotions. Yes, I was given time to think about renting. But for myself, I have already decided everything.

- Do you think that you have realized your full potential?

-- Of course not. There was a lot what I wanted to do, and I wanted to achieve a lot more in single skating. But it turned out that way. In fact, after the Olympic Games in Sochi, I wanted to try myself in ice dancing. I had this desire for several years, but it was perceived by many with hostility, and the idea immediately disappeared.

- What did not allowed you realize your full potential?

- 99 percent - health problems. And the rest, of course, has already been applied to this. After my diagnosis was announced, people started to message me, asking why I did it? But even if I did not say it myself, the information would still leak. Anorexia is a disease of the 21st century, it occurs quite often. Unfortunately, not everyone cope with it. I felt that there was nothing of the kind if I openly say so. The only thing I regret that I did not do this earlier, because everything went on not the first, second or third year ...

After the "Cup of Russia" I came home, folded my skates in the closet and have not seen them since. After that I didn't pull on the ice. In January she went to the clinic. That's the whole story.

- After the Olympics in Sochi, the glory that struck you gave strength to move on, or, on the contrary, was burdensome?

- I was really tired because of that, it was really hard for me. I'm not a public person. Never was. Since my childhood I was a very strong introvert. I had to make efforts on myself in order to speak with a stranger,. Now I'm much easier in communication with different people, has become much more sociable. But I have already developed some habits, which I follow. And I do not think that I need to appear in every newspaper, every broadcast, where my name is. I do not welcome this and will not do it. I prefer to talk briefly, on the case and refute those things that I need to refute, because in connection with my long silence and with the early announcement of the retirement, many upstarts have come out, articles have been written, interviews with people I do not know at all.

At first it was funny, until it took the scope of some madness! There was a lot of fake information that I want to debunk. A serious reason for this was the program that appeared on the First Channel, where everything was fake. When I asked the editors: "How did you allow this program to appear on tv?", They answered me: "But you did not refute all the information personally, so this may be true." Therefore, I will have to refute the speculation now.

- Then tell me

- Let's start with one show, after which my mother has turned gray, and I have added gray hair, but the creators of the show are doing well - the ratings are high. So, there was a man with a talking name Zanozin on this show. This person claimed that I entered the Moscow State University, and this is a reliable information. But my entrance to the university is only in the plans, if, God forbid, everything will turn out. I plan to pass exams only next year. I would like to do sports management in the future. It's interesting for me, it will be connected with my previous life.

The second. The man who dares to call himself my father wanders through different programs. Question: but how do channel editors allow this? This man is an outspoken crook. Even if he is my namesake, then there is no need to adjust the decision to answer. This person has nothing to do with me. And the facts that he talked about me - I just want a gag in his mouth to insert. It's impossible to listen to this!

As for my father, I know perfectly who he is and where he lives. Therefore, I warn: if such cases occur again, my "fathers or relatives" will appear on the channels, possessed by the desire to propiate themselves at my expense, then we will meet with them in court.

An article appeared in one of the newspapers. While reading, I thought that an anecdote. There are only two words out of the truth - Julia and Lipnitskaya. That's it! Why did they come up with some young man who supposedly influenced on my decision to retire? Some statements were made by a relative of our family who wished to remain anonymous. I have no relatives and friends who could afford something like that. The whole article is entirely a journalist's fantasy. I would give the highest grade to the author for that composition!

- It's a good thing that in such a situation you do not lose your sense of humor. What are you dreaming about now?

- What do I dream about? Most of all I want to find myself a profession that I find interesting. Now I am at a crossroads, because there are many proposals, different options, projects ... But I can not and do not want to come somewhere to just sit in the role of a wedding general. I want to do something I will b interested in, something I will know and understand how it works and without studying it will not work. So now I have o concentrate on studying. I actively study English with tutors. In the near future I will concentrate on studying, and there it will be seen. Of course, I will try myself in some other things and try to find something for myself. I have been asked if I will participate in some shows. I can not and do not want to do it now, although there were such proposals. Time will pass and, maybe, something will change, we'll see.

But I know for sure that I will not work as a coach. Linking your profession to sports is another matter. But without education anywhere. Interest is a hobby, but a hobby is a hobby, and a profession is an education.

Everyone knows that I have always loved horses. And now I have my own horse. In Moscow. Not far from our county house there is a private stable where I can practice equestrian sports, go horseback riding for 30-40 kilometers. This is one of my favorite hobbies and I do not mind spending time on it, because I get pleasure from it. The horse's name is Dakota - the Trakehner breed. High, model appearance with an excellent character. Just a dream!

- That's great! Do you want to add something else?

- I would like to thank the Federation and all the people who helped and supported me. Special thanks to my now-former coach Alexei Evgenievich Urmanov, who, during our work, gave as much as was possible, helped and instantly reacted to all the problems that arose and solved them quickly. It was very comfortable for me to train in Sochi, although this was a completely different life. Sochi has a very friendly staff, and everyone is kind to each other. I would be happy if we would have achieved results with this team. And I'm sorry that this did not happen. But again I repeat, it was a pleasure to work with such people.

I want to say thank you to all the fans for their love, for their faith, understanding and expectation. But it was necessary. And for me and not just for me. Now I receive many messages. I even try to answer sometimes, because some people write from the heart, and when reading such messages, I sometimes get tears, but more often I still smile. I'm very glad that there are people who treat me with such warmth.

I want to say thank you and those who didn't like me, it made me think sometimes and go on.

Just thanks to everyone!

- Thank you, Julia.

Mean while Morozov:
about Morozova/Bagin: they've only been skating for a month together and Anabelle switched to the ice dance only a year ago. She likes the ice dance, and she skates well, hence thye participated the test skates. Of course she has her Olympic dream, it's a must and I help her make her dream come true. I helped everyone else, including those who were not worth it, so sure I will help my daughter.
He doesn't have to be strict with his daughter because `she grew up in a different world, she does not that feature, that is usual for many Russian skaters. I don't have to make her do a thing, she knows what time she has to wake up and come to the practice'

Oh dear, who are those `not worthy'? The Olympic bronze medalists?

He really is kind of despicable isn't he? (and not only because he is basically a predator). I'm as far as you can get from being an Ilinykh/Katsalapov fan (I will never get the praises she's still getting) but that's a very inappropriate comment to make about former students. Make me question again what are WeaPo doing with him.

I mean I don't love him saying that either, but he's had a lot of students. He may not be talking about anyone high profile, but rather people who had the money but not much talent that he worked with for a bit as caseyedwards said, which is a bit different.

It’s not uncommon at a modern dance or ballet performance for the audience to be given a programme describing what each segment symbolizes.

What bothers me the most I guess is the overdrama, philosophical quest in her program. I want a skater to be musical, not doing a mime show on the ice. And it's not all abput Medvedeva... It's about all the Russian junior skaters on the circuit (or any other skaters, it just seems to be the trend these days in Russia) eho would open their veins were they allowed to show their angst... Is it clearer now? Lol!

Well, Med's style is obviously not for everyone...

Olga Korbut, the gymnast, had a very distinctive, unique style of gymnastics (which I thought was great) that received the same kind of fan base :drama: reaction. Despite the fact that it is an entirely different sport, Med's 'style' and the subsequent reactions to it, I find similar to Korbut, either you like it or not.

I do applaud Janny for trying new things, pushing the envelope, daring to be different and not just simply winking at the judges, for example. ;)

Plushenko criticises the proposal to reduce the base value for quads

"Full of delirium, nonsense," Plushenko said, "men's single skating.....has been pushed forward with quads, so why lower their value? Who decides this, I do not understand? Who thinks it up?"

"The future of world figure skating is in multi-turn jumping, as my great trainer Alexei Mishin said..... artistry is needed, who is against it? But why lower the value of quadruple jumps? On the contrary, bonuses should be given! " - said Plushenko.

"By the way, I've heard that the free program is to be reduced to four minutes from four minutes and forty seconds. Complete nonsense" the figure skater believes.

Janny reminds me a lot of Julia around Sochi time. So many people say she is musical but to me she clearly does not know what to do with the music, and having some imaginary story does not help. She has clearly been instructed to do what she does on the ice regardless of the tempo or mood of the music. She isn't emotionally involved and the face shows. She can repeat the exact same skating whether what music is playing, or even if no music is playing.

Skaters like Kaetlyn and Ashley move with the music and skate to it.

That was really nice, although the veil over the face seemed like overkill. I liked that better than any other program of hers I've ever seen. I kind of wish she'd gone with that for a competitive program!

I really loved that.. Who was the choreographer?

Interviews and articles with skaters, coaches and members of the RFSF after the test skates

Anna Pogorilaya:
- may start season at the 2nd Russian Cup event in Yoshkar Ola (October, 12-16)
- she hadn't train for a week before the test skates, there was an accident at the rink: she run into another girl

Nina Mozer:
Stolbova/Klimov are getting back in shape by leaps
http://tass.ru/sport/4556121

Alexandr Kogan:
- Evgenia skated both SP and FP very well but she was upset after the free as she did few mistakes. We all forgot that she isn't a machine and is just a girl of 17. Zagitova also did a great job there but was upset as well as her skate wasn't unmistakable. He was very pleased with Elizaveta, she is in great shape right now
- For Kogan, Voronov was the best one among men, he successfully landed two quads and two triple axels, although he had some mistakes as well

Is she really trying to do something new or just following what her coaching team says? I've said it, the girl has many superb qualities, but to me, they are trying to cover her lack of musicality with these philosophical theme programs, which is good for the skater in a way. But being a musician myself, I wouldn't agree its a new style made on purpose. The Duchesnays changed the ice dance, did something totally different but still were musical and could relate to the music.

While I wish she'd be challenged in other ways, because she has lovely physical facility, I think the themes are there to engage her in her programs, and I think they do.

it is not her new idea, it her choreographer style, he did it with Yulia, with Ksenia Makarova, etc, it is his style/idea. I think that is the reason why Yulia looked for different choreographer.

I agree, and I also think she has more awareness of and connection to the music than any of the other Russian ladies. Tutberidze's skaters are the best trained by far and have complex programs, but other than Shcherbakova who is just a junior (and injured at that), they don't show any true musicality the way Anna does. I like Radionova and Tuktamysheva for their grit and Sotskova for her intellect, but I really hope Anna makes it to the Olympics.
