Netflix/Prime/Hulu Discoveries

I'm really enjoying Halt and Catch Fire on Netflix. Set in Texas in the 1980s, it is a fictional account of a marketing guy who leads a team of software and hardware engineers to build one of the first PCs, against their better judgement. Loads of twists and turns in the plot, and some interesting takes on the role of creativity in work, the play of power in organizations, gender dynamics in geek culture etc. The Canadian actress Mackenzie Davis doesn't hurt either.

Also watching Grace and Frankie and think the writing has improved quite a bit. Usually a few belly laughs in each episode and some thought-provoking themes on sex and aging, women entrepreneurs, and negotiating differences in friendship.

Also noticed new episodes of Scott and Bailey.

For light detective work, did you ever see Pie in the Sky? It's fun, especially if you like cooking. Possibly only if you like cooking, or gourmet food (or whatever the current term for that is... "gourmet food" sounds so 70s).

I've never seen this. This sounds right up my alley, as I love detective shows and cooking. :)

I agree with you with Grace and Frankie. I thought the show was only ok before but kept watching it because I liked it enough but it seems the writing team kicked it up a notch.
 
Watched Badlands on Netflix. It is an AMC series and I am quite enjoying it. The fighting is some of the prettiest and unrealistic looking, but the writing is not great.

I've watched "13 Reasons Why".

It's dark, it's sad, it's extremly well written, the actors are amazing.

It's not something, you'd like to bingewatch. I was glad, it was at times quite slow paced. This gave me time to let the story sink in. I don't know the book. Actually, I've never had heard of it before.

I'd say: Don't watch more than three episodes a day, and when you do, stay away for one or two days.
 
I was so happy with some of the re-releases! We watched Good Will Hunting - my 5th time but my daughter's first time. She is a math person and really liked it. We are waiting for time to watch Iron Giant - I think it is the redone version. It had such rave reviews in the theaters. We missed the BFG in theaters so that is on the list too. April is a good month for Netflix!
 
I binge-watched Taboo over the weekend. Dark and sometimes gory, but I liked it.
 
So I just finished all of Rita on Netflix. It's been two years since the season 3 finale, and I guess Netflix has decided to not fund a season 4 in the near future, but I would seriously love another season. I really enjoyed the show. I felt season 3 was especially strong since it was mostly about Rita at the school dealing with the kids. All the seasons had that, but it seemed to be much more dominant in season 3.
 
I just finished it the other night. I think every parent, as well as anyone who works with kids, no matter what age they are, should watch this.

I am so glad I was far out of school before social media became a "thing." People didn't even have cell phones when I graduated high school.

Definitely agree. I've just started watching it and think it's really wonderful. However, yeah, it is not a binge watch type of series considering the issues it covers.

I've started Bordertown, a Finnish detective series. After a good start, it's a little underwhelming. Maybe the detective, though eccentric and brilliant, is not lonely enough. :) I'll keep watching though.

I'll be interested to hear what you think. I feel bad for not liking it more because I love Finland and I do like the lead character. Probably shouldnt have watched it so soon after Vera. Brenda Blethyn is so immense in that.

I've been waiting and waiting for new episodes of Hinterlands and Occupied. It seems a lot of countries take their sweet time between seasons! Americans are spoiled.
 
I am finishing up the first season of Fuller House, at last. OMG, it is soooo good! DJ, Stephanie and Kimmie make a great trio.
 
We've been watching the second season of The Man in the High Castle. Really enjoying it so far. I think I'm liking the second season even more than the first. Now we know all the characters/milieu/world, so they can focus more on the characters, less on exposition.

Wow! I watched the first three episodes of Bordertown, and I thought it was intense. It reminds of The Sandhamm Murders on Hulu. I really liked it. The main character reminds me of Daniel Craig. I like him. I also like Lena, and I hope she'll stick around and work with the team. So far, I like how the daughter is supportive of her father and not a sullen teen. I hope she doesn't go cliche later in the series. I also like how the season has self-contained cases and not a season-long case. It makes binging easier. After that heaviness, though, I'm moving onto lighter fare with Father Brown.

Have you tried The Break? It's a French show on Netflix that might be up your alley. I've only seen the first episode, so far.
 
Sorry if this series was mentioned already in this thread but I've just discovered a fantastic British series on netflix called Broadchurch. Season 1 was amazing. Season 2 was pretty good. I didn't care for season 3 though.

I liked the second case of Bordertown better. It IS dark, as if the whole thing were shot through gray filters. Lena does continue, yay. I will have a look at The Break. I've never watched a French TV show. It will get extra points from me if it helps me with my conversational French. :)

I think that one has been pretty well discussed, but I didnt know there was a season 3. It already seemed to be petering out in season 2! Two tangential notes:

- my sister told me an Ameican version of Broadchurch has been done featuring the same male lead. Weird, eh? I never checked it out.
- Olivia Colman (Ellie) turned up in The Night Manager. Both she and it were splendid. (One of the pleasures of watching British TV is seeing the same actors keep turning up unexpectedly. Happens much more than in American TV.)

I found season 3 completely unnecessary. But I still watched it anyways.

Try Witnesses, too. I believe it's still on Netflix. It's another French show.

Thanks for the idea, I checked it out, the original name is "La trêve" and it isn't a French serie but a Belgian one, which might be even better because they have a peculiar way to see things. I don't know how to explain it but this small country has had and still have so many great artists in many areas too. I can't wait to watch this serie noire.

Series 3 just finished this Monday on itv. It's available on DVD, as every bbc/itv show right after last episode.

Can't tell, if it is on overseas netflix already. I liked series 3 better than 2. Probably just one season would've been best. Broadchurch won't be renewed for a 4th series.

BTW the Amrican version of this show is Gracepoint. Only one season due to very low ratings.

I'm sorry. I should've checked. I saw it last year and didn't realize it was Belgian. I thought it was very good.
