@Spun Silver I just finished watching Marcella. I though it was very very intense and dark. I loved River, which was also dark but had some lighter moments. This didn't seem to have any light moments. There were a few scenes that just tore me up. I thought there was a lot going on, maybe too much. The multiple storylines reminded me of the original The Bridge. I haven't watched Happy Valley, so I don't know how they compare. I liked Marcella but it might have been just a shade too dark for me. I liked River a lot more.

Thank you for the report. Did you watch a season or an episode? I guess I will give it a try... maybe. It does sound kind of borderline-bearable.

I LOVED River. I wonder if there will or even could be another season. I think you will like Happy Valley. The lead character, as portrayed by Sarah Lancashire, is marvelous, if a little too busy to be one of our brooders. (She is definitely haunted and furious - but with a gentle side.) It is dark but with many small rays of light. You have to turn up the volume to follow those north-England working-class accents though!

I did turn on closed captioning for a couple of episodes, but after I got used to the accents I turned it off.

I watched the whole season. I wanted to be able to give you my thoughts on the entire thing. :) There is a lot going on and some things are left dangling but overall, it ends tidily.

I'll have to try Happy Valley. I was a bit afraid because of how dark it seems but I survived Marcella. :)

I didnt find Happy Valley that dark at all. No more so than any of our other faves. :) There is so much humanity in it.

Thank you for the full-season report of Marcella. :D Appreciate it! FWIW, I am coming to the end (so far) of Longmire and still love it. It gets darker as it progresses, but nothing you cant handle. A cowboy brooder and his noble Indian best friend. Sounds more clichéd than it is.

Thank you. I'm looking forward to watching Happy Valley. I started Penny Dreadful today but I may go back and forth, rather than binging. I think I have Longmire in my list, too. :)

Okey dokey, here is my question:

Couldn't make it past two episodes of Happy Valley, too depressing for me. (I'm not interested in debating whether it *is* dark, that's just my taste).

Do I take Marcella off the watch list?

I'd say yes but what do you like to watch?

How are you liking Penny Dreadful? I was hoping to really like it but couldn't get past episode 4. It just wasn't holding my attention.

P.S. Am I the only one who hates the quote feature since they made the change? I know it was a long time ago but to quote someone I now have to click 3 different things. I loved when it was one simple click and you began typing. Sorry, back to regularly scheduled programming.

Well, I've seen two episodes so far. It's ok. I've been looking forward to it ever since I came out but I don't love it yet. I found the first episode to be rather confusing, and I do find myself on the iPad while watching it.

If you hit "Reply" (the blue linked one on the bottom right, beside Like & +Quote), you'll get what you want: single-click quote in a reply box. But you have to choose the blue Reply under the specific post you're quoting.

As I just did. :D

I'd say yes but what do you like to watch?

As far as moody detective stories, we enjoyed Broadchurch. But it had a sense of humor and some uplifting moments. I need uplift:D

We started watching Miss Fisher as a result of the OP's suggestion, and it's a hoot. As is Foyle's War. But I realize they aren't really the same genre.

Miss Fisher and Foyle's War are great, as is George Gently. I would take Marcella of the list. It doesn't have any uplift.

All this time and I had no idea! lol Thanks!

Started Foyle's War. It's ok (the side plots take up too much time and focus away from the main story) but Foyle himself is kinda meh so it's hard to care. So far I'm more interested in all the guest appearances - Rosamund Pike! James McAvoy! David Tennant!

We're midway through Bloodlines. I'm enjoying it. It doesn't pull me in quite as much as some series I've watched, but still keeps me interested. I wish Danny weren't so loathsome, but I guess that's what creates the storyline. Really great acting, particularly from the 4 main sibling characters. very happy to watch Linda Cardellini in it. She is a good addition to any cast.

I'm watching Marcella. I guess I've seen too many detective shows because the grimness isnt really bothering me. Friel is pretty good and I like the glimpses of familiar actors like "Laura" whose character was killed off in Last Tango in Halifax, and the chilling Sinead Cusack. But I find it very hard to follow. There are so many men! I cant keep them straight! And then there's the undermiked, sparse British dialogue. I've seen four episodes and even now I am still confused about several of the characters.

I know, right? I was confused by all the characters, too. It was hard to keep track.

Since this is a skating board, I highly recommend the documentary "The Fabulous Ice Age" on Netflix.

For new Netflix releases, I loved "The Big Short," which was an Oscar nominee this year. Quirky, funny, infuriating, profane....

For those people liking British mystery/crime shows "Broadchurch" is worth mentioning; I've only seen one mention of it in this thread.

Since I'm a cooking nerd, I love that "America's Test Kitchen" has episodes on Netflix as well.

I'm really enjoying Stranger Things on Netflix. It's creepy and retro and addictive.
Yeah, we're having fun with that, too. Although I am SO not tuned into a lot of details; a friend pointed out that I'd missed Pee-Chees and LeSportSac purses!! BOY does that bring back memories.

Belated thanks to whoever mentioned The Detectorists. Hubby and I watched a couple episodes back when it was first mentioned, and didnt get anything from it, but tonight after a long, hot, stressful day I noticed it in my Watching list on Netflix and gave it another try. It was absolutely what I needed: silly, touching, lovely and head-banging all at once. I was laughing and laughing. I am laughing just thinking about it.

I have been watching Legit on Netflix. Certainly not the best comedy series I have ever seen but it has had me laughing a few times.

I think that might have been me. You're welcome. :) It's a real gem, isn't it? I've been recommending it all over the place since I discovered it a year or so ago -- though for me it was first via a DVD from the library rather than Netflix.

There's a neat extra on the season 2 DVD, all of the cast members talking about how they use the "props" to do their own detectoring while they're on breaks, and who's had the best finds.

I'm glad there's a season 2! It made me want to go detectoring too! I just decided to take up owling (I have always wanted to see one in the wild, and there are supposedly a few varieties in my area) - maybe I can detector at the same time! :)

We just finished season 2 of Bloodline. Quite the ending! The second season started a bit shakily, I thought, but really picked up momentum by the end. I really hope there'll be a season 3.

ETA: Yay, I just read online that it's been renewed for Season 3. :)

I watched an episode of Wentworth on a whim last night. It seemed both very grim and fairly clichéd (and I havent even seen Orange is the New Black). I will try one more episode but at the moment I am confused about its five-star rating. It's definitely not ideal bedtime viewing (I mainly watch TV at the very tag end of my day).
