Harriet Tubman - American $20 Bill

Does this mean we will no longer see new $20 bills with Jackson on them? I have not read the article (can't do it at work)

I don't think that's been decided yet. My prediction is that it'll rotate between several people, both men and women. Jackson was the one replaced instead of Hamilton because of Jackson's shameful legacy toward Native Americans.

Good choice with Tubman. I was rooting for her or Clara Barton.

While Hamilton would remain on the $10, and Abraham Lincoln on the $5s, images of women would be added to the back of both — in keeping with Mr. Lew’s intent “to bring to life” the national monuments depicted there.

Welllll...as long as you lil' ol' ladies keep in mind you gotta walk five paces behind the MEN...feedin' y'all this lil' snack should keep yer traps shut for another century or two! :respec:

Maybe, this is why Jackson is moved to the back, with Tubman on the front? (Actually, I like the way that women will be worked into the designs with some of the existing monuments ... for example, they plan on including Marian Andersen and Eleanor Roosevelt along with the Lincoln Memorial on the back of the $5 bill)

I kind of like the symbolism (whether intentional or not) of Jackson being "demoted" to the back of a bill that has Harriet Tubman on the front.

It might have been even better if it had been Rosa Parks that was riding in front, but Harriet Tubman will do. :)

That would be a clever play on history, but seriously, I think that Harriet Tubman, born a slave who escaped into freedom, then returned to lead many other slaves to their freedom, worked as a nurse and then a Union spy during the Civil War, and fought for women's suffrage is a truly heroic woman who deserves being recognized this way, more so than Rosa Parks, as iconic a figure as she is. JMO there are many American women who should be more well known and honored for their contributions, but I am happy with the choice of Harriet Tubman.

Thread drift: re Marian Andersen, she sang at my father's graduation from basic training right after Pearl Harbor. His class was the first one to be trained as Army Air Corps so they made it a big deal. My father graduated 3rd in his class of 350 so my mother had a front row seat. She said that she had never heard such a beautiful voice.

It's about time a woman was on our money. And more important to me, all the men who have a shameful past need to be removed. Jackson shouldn't just be moved to the back, he should be moved off.

For once I agree with Trump (shocking!).........

Why not create another denomination instead of replacing a former president on the $20 bill?

Whether this is a political move or not (I disagree with him here), if our currency has faces of only presidents, I see no need to replace a president with a non-president. There are many deserving persons in our history. If Harriet is only a start, I am OK with it, but it will be tough to come up with a new denomination for each person. So perhaps having two persons on the front and back may be the best solution.

You agree with this?: Trump - "Well, Andrew Jackson had a great history, and I think it's very rough when you take somebody off the bill,"

Obviously Trump (and you) have no idea of history regarding Jackson. He owned hundreds of slaves & he signed the Indian Removal Act among other things. The "Trail of Tears" alone is reason enough not to honor him.

As for coming up with other denominations (as though it would be heresy to remove any of the present men) that idea is (IMO) idiotic. It is long overdue for some of the female heros of this country to be represented on the money. And not just on the back or two paces behind.

Black, Republican, gun-toting, veterans’ activist with ninja-like spy skills and strong Christian beliefs she may have been, but Harriet Tubman was involved in helping undocumented immigrants, including herself, across international borders.

Initially, she and her charges were safe in the northern US, but with a change in the laws, she had to go to Canada. Tubman then began and ended her rescues at St. Catharines; she lived there for eight years.

I'm not sure where she'd fit in in today's Republican Party. :shuffle:

We change our money all the time. Therefore, the argument that so-and-so has always been on the money and therefore is entitled to be on the money forever doesn't fly. And to Donald Trump, who thinks it's "rough" when you take someone off the money, perhaps he doesn't realize that Jackson is dead and so doesn't know or care where his face is. ;)
