Duuuuudddeee, Jessica Jones...that show gave me the creeps...I mean, it was amazing, but I've never had a show/movie make me so paranoid in real life, haha. *shiver* Krystin Ritter was perfect in the role.

Just watched Daredevil for the first time in anticipation of S2 starting soon. I'd tried watching it awhile back but lost steam after two episodes; I can't remember why. Maybe because it look a little long to get going. I'm glad I re-watched it; again, great show. Funny how maligned it was for it's violence back when it came out three years ago, but to me JJ was so much more horrifying to watch. I literally watched Jessica Jones between my fingers a lot, lol.

I watched Jessica Jones just because David Tennant was on it and I'm a huge Whovian and Tennant fan. In actuality,I'm just not much in to that show.Daredevil I like though.

I'm into 11.22.63 right now and I'm binge watching Once Upon a Time because I didn't get to watch it all these years. I watch Midsomer Murders and Foyles War when they add new episodes.

I had some people recommend Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and I finally got around to watching. Not only are the clothes and cars to die for but I'm now a huge fan of Nathan Page (Seriously, Australia, why have you hidden him away? Yowza!).

Plus, it's great to watch a 1920's woman be completely comfortable with who she is and be kickass in the process. I really hope there will be a season 4.

What shows or movies have you found that you can't believe you missed the first time around?

Saw Miss Fishers for the first time last night; loved it. If the rest are as good, I'll be watching! Thanks:saint:

I actually went back and rewatched MFMM from the beginning and found it even better the second time around. I...may be falling into fandom mode. Which is dangerous as nothing's been decided yet on whether the show will continue. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Maybe PBS would be willing to invest in the show now that Downton Abbey is over?

Netflix

Kimmy Schmidt
Master of None
Flaked

Other online

Transparent
Catastrophe
Mozart in the Jungle

What's been great to scope out is Netflix's inclusion of many quality British mini series/series that only had 1-2 seasons.

Thanks to this thread I started watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries last night. I'm hooked. The clothes, the dialogue, the whole joie de vivre attitude takes me back to the enjoyment of watching Poirot and Nero Wolfe on A&E (when the channel was all about Art and Entertainment and not reality tv).

Dear Zachary: A Letter To A Son About His Father. A documentary. So good. Grab some tissues.

What a great idea for a thread!

I highly recommend the following if you are a fan of political/crime thrillers.

NETFLIX
1. The original, British version of House of Cards, produced in 1990. Ian Richardson's Francis Urquhart makes Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood look like a wimp.
2. Occupied, a 2015 political thriller from Norway. The Russian government has condemned this series, which means it must have touched a nerve. All I know is I could not stop watching this show and very much look forward to the next season!

HULU
1. The Bridge (SE). I was a big fan of the short-lived, U.S. version of this series on FX but the show was originally produced for Swedish and Danish television in 2011. For once, I actually thought the American version was better but the Swedish version is also quite addictive.

ITA with the original British House of Cards. I watched it again not that long ago, after seeing the US version, and thought it still held up very well, crackling with intensity -- though I have to say the series did lose steam by the 3rd run (The Final Cut).

Occupied sounds great, thanks for that suggestion.

I agree The Final Cut did lose steam but I think the ending made up for it!!! I hope you enjoy Occupied as much as I did!

I don't have Netflix anymore so I don't know if it is still there, but omg watch "Dear Zachary, A Letter To A Son About his Father". I cried for days and days and days. Its not a running series, it is a single documentary/true story (not a scripted movie). Its from 2008, but its one of the saddest, yet most beautifully told stories I have ever seen. I am crying right now just thinking about it. :wuzrobbed

Happy Valley on Netflix is another detective series with a female lead - Sarah Lancaster from Last Tango in Halifax. She is still in the north (I think) but boy, what a different character. She is fab. The show's intense, don't go by the title!

^ Have you watched season 2 yet? I've only seen season 1, but the fact that they have season 2 now is one of the reasons I'll be re-subscribing to Netflix very soon.

And yes, it is the north, specifically West Yorkshire, so very close to Sarah Lancashire's (not Lancaster) Halifax digs. Also not a million miles away from Downton Abbey, former home of Siobhan Finneran, who plays her sister. :D

And just on the other side of the Pennines from Manchester, where both Lancashire and Finneran got their start on Coronation Street. :D :D

Sorry about the name mistake, I thought of that after posting but it was past my bedtime. :) Yes,, season 2 is out now, and she is incredible in it. She is aging not beautifully but splendidly for acting purposes. Her policing work gives her character the sad wisdom of Mother Earth. Does she really have digs in Halifax or is that a reference to Last Tango? Because her accent is very believable.

OMG, i never would have recognized her sister as O'Brien!!

Amazing how hot north England has become on TV lately.

Yes, the Halifax comment was re: Last Tango. I have no idea where she lives IRL, but if I had to guess I'd say London.

But she was born & raised in Lancashire (how convenient!) and their accent is very similar to Yorkshire, so she comes by it honestly. Back in the days when I watched both Coronation Street and Heartbeat, it was staggering how many actors went from one to the other seamlessly.

I've heard her do more posh / southern England accents too. Most (well, many) British actors can do a range of regional accents convincingly.

Entertainment Weekly featured "Gilmore Girls" on the cover this week and I am looking forward to the series on Netflix. They are doing four 90 minute episodes titled "Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall." And they named those who are returning and it is the entire cast of dozens minus Melissa McCarthy. And even then they said they had not signed her yet. So she may or may not be back. Time will tell. I love life in Stars Hollow and am looking forward to seeing it ten years later.

Melissa made the announcement on Ellen the other day that she IS going to be a part of the reunion! It won't be a big part, but everyone managed to shift enough stuff around schedule-wise that she can pop in. A cameo almost, but then, no one thought she'd be able to do it at all, so any part is good for me!

No, but Occupied was wonderful (thanks, @znhurston). Hopefully it will continue to be. I did not think I was going to like Miss Fisher, but both she and Jack were irresistible -- Essie Davis's smile lights up the screen.
You're welcome, Spun Silver. My friends in Norway tell me that there will be a second season!

Bumping to see if anyone else has suggestions. :)

I was with a group of friends last night and the topic of Netflix series came up: a couple of them raved about Grand Hotel. It's set in 1905 in a, well, grand hotel in Spain. My friends described it as somewhat like Downton, somewhat soap-y, and ridiculously addictive.

I'll have to check out Grand Hotel. "Happy Valley" may be too dark for me.

I'm enjoying Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I think that, because of the Miss Fisher character, it isn't too dark despite the fact that it's about murders. My favorite part of the show is her fabulous wardrobe. And it's fun to see the old cars and the historic Melbourne architecture.

I'll definitely check out the Gilmore Girls.

I'm also looking forward to the second season of Chef's Table, which is going to be released on Netflix soon. The cinematography for that show is great.

I found the first episode of "Happy Valley" *very* dark. It traveled along, and the plot hummed (although you could see the kidnapping problem a mile away) and I love the lead actress. But there was not one even just mildly depressing moment. It was all total depression, all the time. And at least (American) House of Cards, even in its darkest moments, Frank Underwood is cheerful. We won't be back to Happy Valley.

We are greatly enjoying Miss Fisher. Talk about cheerful! And I'm not a fashionista, but I luuurve her outfits.

Any other recs in that vein?

Netflix recommends several series for people who like Miss Fisher: Doc Martin, The Bletchley Circle, Midsomer Murders, and Death in Paradise. The only one of those that I've seen is The Bletchley Circle, and I really enjoyed it.

That's really funny. I really enjoyed all those recommendations (well Midsomer Murders gets a bit tedious after awhile), but I just can't get into Miss Fisher. I'm definitely in the minority here I know! :)

I prefer The Bletchley Circle to Miss Fisher. I like Miss Fisher, but don't love it. It's nice entertainment for when there's nothing else to watch. But it's not like I'm binge watching it.
