I think they should give all the front runners an early fall international and see how they shake out. It would have been good if they insisted that skaters do one summer comp US or even on the opposite coast (BC and Alberta skaters go to Ontario or Quebec and Ontario and Quebec go to Alberta or BC.) Skating only close to home is not, IMHO, a good way to go. The judges are too familiar with the skaters and what they can do. The tendency to see what you want to see rather than what is really done is all to real. I am not saying there is cheating. Just human nature. Step levels and PCS seem to be where you see the differences between local and away.
