What if Mao Asada and Julia Lipnitskaya had both skated clean in Sochi?

2013 Worlds SP was a tragic disaster for the Russian ladies. I believe Sotnikova was slightly underscored in the FS, or scored harshly. Not sure it would have made a difference.

Elena Radionova was too young for Sochi, although she did skate in the Gala. So I think you are right, it would have been Anna.
Sotnikova planned a 3 jump combo at the halfway point for two seasons. She missed it almost every single time until Sochi Olympics. It was sloppy but she always was singling the triple flip or falling or something. She was always leaving points on the table until Sochi.

Let's be clear, she wasn't clean in Sochi either, just less obviously flawed.

Moreover, she often benefits from the "Russian" branding, but she isn't one of Eteri, Tarasova, Zoueva, Morozova, Zhuk, or Mishin's skaters, which are known for technical consistency.

I still think Sotnikova is one of the most talented Russian ladies skaters ever. She was just Cohen levels of inconsistent.

If she'd kept going, I think a 4toe would have been possible for her. Her 3toe was massive.

Cohen was far superior to Sotnikova. Tarasova, long after they had parted ways, said there was no one like Cohen.

I didn't appreciate Cohen enough during her competitive years because she competed against Michelle Kwan.

for sure I call her sloppy!

Tarasova was always around Sotnikova! I remember calling tarasova Sotnikova real coach a lot. In fact her performance before Olympics was so much like Ilia Kulik. Do the same layout over and over but mess it up almost everywhere but Olympics.

I think you misinterpreted my post, @bardtoob I was comparing Cohen and Sotnikova on the issue of consistency. Both very talented skaters who rarely skated clean.

You bring up an interesting point šŸ¤”

Tarasova was Team Coordinator, but I would guess Tarasova invested more in Sotnikova than Lipnitskaya since Eteri probably kept Tarasova at arms length.

Yes. I think the judges forgave Sotnikova on an edge and a rotation in the LP at Sochi?

That implies the technical caller made bad calls that favored her as well as the judges giving her higher grades of execution and program component scores than reasonable.

This implies a complete breakdown in the ISU creating field of fair play at their largest event.

I didn't appreciate her because of the commentators' endless gushing about her spiral and perfect positions. But, she did have a remarkable spiral.

If we start to see what the judges "forgave", we'd need to see all skaters, and all elements, not just jumps.
